The BBC has indicated it also wants to launch English regional variants of its existing BBC One HD service as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland editions of BBC Two HD. This would not need any of the new capacity. It would, however, need to be approved by the BBC Trust.

Great news, but I am surprised that the BBC can afford this at this moment in time. I read in another thread that, particularly for the English regions, the extra equipment needed would be costly.

I believe that this news makes it inevitable that Sky News HD will now come to VM as Sky try to stop viewers defecting to the HD news services.

Would you be able to ask the experts that you work for (if it's their speciality) about the possibilities of a breach of competition law by Sky & VM and let us know what they say?

Whew! I was hoping for some of those niche channels from Sky to be on VM cable, too. Such as H&C (Sky 280), and more>movies and movies4men, as well. They are all great channels.

At least this means that HD channels are becoming the norm and more widespread. It should give Sky less reason to consider itself the home of HD and cling onto exclusive contracts for the HD channels.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if Sky use this as an opportunity to lock ITV Digital Channels and Channel 5 into longer term pay-tv deals and try to block them going onto the new freeview multiplexes.

I haven't heard anything, but it wouldn't surprise me. I doubt this channel makes any money, but it's whole purpose is to broadcast propaganda/the news from a Russian perspective (delete as appropriate according to your point of view), in the same way that Al Jazeera exists.

Yes, some of the better FTA/basic package channels would be a good addition. Now that VM appears to have developed a more realistic business model for the smaller/niche/poorer channels, it wouldn't surprise me if these appeared.

With all the recent channel additions and the expected arrival of Sky Atlantic and BT Sports, we could be in a position where VM have nothing worthwhile to add :D

Ohhhh, I'm sure they'll try, especially as they know that Channel 5 and, to some extent, Channel 4 are not exactly awash with cash.

I wonder if, despite their "no plans to introduce any of their HD channels to Freeview" statement, they will eventually bring Sky News HD to Freeview to prevent a loss of viewers to BBC News HD when that starts?

They certainly won't let anyone know about it until it actually happens as FTA is their enemy, but they know that they have to embrace it to some extent (ie Challenge and Pick TV going FTA on satellite).

I can believe that the capacity will be cheap too, how many FTA HD channels can you think of to fill up the remaining slots up for grabs (apart from the BBC, Sky and Channel 5)? The latter may now be in a position to get onto Freeview if my assumption of cheaper carriage costs is correct.

I agree in my opinion this will ramp the pressure up on Sky and will mean many people wont look too favourably on the HD charge , the traditional pay TV operators are going to start to lose customers just like their counterparts in the USA did with mounting pressure coming from OTT providers and better sub free alternatives.

What I want to know is when Drama will start on Virgin. Am missing not being able to record old episodes of the Bill on TiVo. I know Watch show some, but they are fairly recent, not going back to the late 90's like Drama are doing.

Keep the sun glasses handy: Virgin add more 3D

Virgin Media, the UK’s leading communications and entertainment company, is adding an array of new 3D titles to its TV service. From July, around 50 hours of 3D content, including stunning shows such as 3D Dive, Kalahari Meerkats and Monster Trucks will join Virgin Media’s On Demand line-up.

Again, this seems an odd decision to make as all the other broadcasters seem to be pulling out, winding down or suspending their 3D services.

Perhaps VM are hoping to capitalise on this and are aiming to be the platform of choice for the minority who want 3D? They may think that if all those who want it are mopped up from elsewhere, they will make a profit from 3D.

More likely, they are hoping that starting to cater for niche markets (eg foreign channels) will bring customers to their wider service.

Interesting, I wonder why BT would bother paying for rights to a match that will be shown FTA?

I had also assumed that the FA Cup was one of the national sporting events protected from going exclusively onto pay TV, is this not the case?

I Think if Virgin Media Get Sky 1+1 The Timeshift Channel I Should imagine That Virgin Media Will Probably Put it on Channel 123 and Move Sky 2 Somewhere Else on There EPG That's My opinion Anyway.

Found this post on the VM forum:

Just read this on BT Care twitter feed...

"Hi, just seen your tweet, I am sorry BT Sport will not be available on Virgin Media"

No "As things stand" there, seems a definitive reply to me.

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...1911348/page/2

I have just tweeted BT Sport myself asking if they will be on VM from launch - will post any answer I get :)

l would take that with a pinch of salt John.

Yes, until the embargo is lifted this will be "the party line". There is no point asking BT or VM staff as, even if they are privvy to the information, they will not be allowed to say so.

I am assuming that the same arrangements are in place for Sky Atlantic whilst Sky rinse what's left out of their USP.

I’m a TV XL customer and get ESPN for free. Will you be replacing ESPN content with anything else?
Until we confirm what’s happening with BT Sport on Virgin Media, we can’t say what will replace ESPN. But you can rest assured that whatever happens, we’ll be making sure all our TV XL customers carry on enjoying great value for money.

from link above

TV XL customer?
If you’re a TV XL customer and have ESPN as part of your package there won't be a change to pricing when we stop showing these channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Also from the link is the price for Sky Sports Collection - £21. Is that correct?

OMG.. and exclusive to cable. Just watch the other platforms falling over themselves to get these exclusives, it should certainly improve VM's negotiating power. ;)

I think that they are probably doing this to try and prevent customers from leaving VM whilst they are unable to confirm that BT Sports will be carried by them.

So, in effect, you can get Sky Sports without paying for a basic pack first. I think that you have to have a basic subscription with Sky before you can add on premium channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Fair play to BT for getting into the sports market and take on their rivals, as a business plan it was a shrewd move. Content is king and when you rely on your rivals for content you have an uphill struggle.

I suspect VM have done a deal BT. It will be interesting to see if it includes HD (I find it so hard to stomach sport in SD).

However there is no way that I can see BT letting VM package it with XL and can only see it being offered as a stand alone. £12 for SD and £15 for HD?

Adding Sky Atlantic HD to XL is probably the sweetener and I can see this being announced at the same time as BT to soften the blow.

Being a sports fan I could be facing a sports package bill of just under £50 a month (over £50 from October) for Sky Sports, BT Sports/ESPN and the HD supplement.

It's going to be cheaper to go to my local and watch the sport over a pint. Based on my viewing habits I make it make it 6 days a month of Non terrestrial TV sport, 12 pints at £3 a pop = I'm better off watching down the pub

I had it for three months when I first got tivo as part of the deal, i'm guessing this spotify deal is for people who didn't get it back then

I see Sky Atlantic as a Sky basics channel and with every other Sky basic channel being available on lower packages the HD one should only be part of XL if Atlantic is to launch on VM

There is some interesting quotes on that page.

It's almost as if Virgin are trying to down sell BT Sports. Not the kind of information I'd expect to see from a company who may be trying to sell that particular product in 2 weeks time.

:(

I still feel we are not entitled to compensation at all. ESPN were happy to go onto XL and those of us into sport benefitted from that. If BT are not up for that as seems inevitable then it is not VM's fault and there is no question of compensation.

Downsize your tv pack or move seem the alternatives....

Bit confused as to how Atlantic is a basic channel and the best thing since sliced bread... basics are bog standard channels surely?

He doesn't mean a basics channel. Sky's channel line up is split in to two, Basics and Premium. There are 2 contracts for the channels with Virgin, one for Sky1, Living,Arts, News, SS News. And another for sports and movies.

Atlantic falls under the basics package, currently all Sky basics are available in SD from M+ and HD in XL

Well neither of them are on Virgin (along with Sky S News HD and Sky Vegas), so clearly not.

That's the way I read it , however going to build a bundle you currently have the option of Sky Sports collection £25.75 and Sky Sports 1 or 2 on their own for £15.50.

Has nobody seen the latest BT sports advert?

They specifically mention that BT sports will not be available to Virgin Customers and come the 1st of August they will lose EPSN.

They say to keep watching ESPN sign up to BT Broadband and you can keep watching ESPN for free.

BT Sports announcement "coming soon".

Info from Nialli's Virgin Media High Definition & TiVo Services blog

I've now heard whispers from both BT and VM that a deal's pretty much done and an announcement is imminent. I'd imagine the £12 for SD, £15 for HD, is what we'll see, same as Sky.
Pure speculation ahoy: an alternative would be that VM may subsidise it for the first three months and include it in TV XL. I wouldn't have thought the cost to VM would be that high and it may prove a sufficient lure to retain or attract casual footie fans who don't want the full Sky Sports extravaganza. Not sure how that would sit with BT but I would have thought it would be one of the options Virgin may consider.
