I would have thought ( but do not know) that would could only be possible in the context of a PVR :dozey:

If it was remotely good the owner wouldn't have set up a new company in order to break association with this STB.

The company and the STB were a joke!

The 3view was a FV PVR and it did actually do a good job of wishlists in that it could get you movies based on actor and it could record future seasons of a show. Unlike Tivo, it was unreliable as a PVR. Owners were lucky to get recordings of the shows they had planned to record let alone the stb working stuff out for itself!

"WishList" yes, but "wishlist" is a rather more commonplace term. Doubt that Tivo would bother with litigation over something so trivial. Given that the 3View isn't available anyway it would seem a moot point, interesting nonetheless.

The actual way TiVo works is patented too, not just the name WishList.

Vaguely reminiscent of Tivo recording stuff that you gave 3 thumbs down. Not my experience but there was a post with regard to that. I have to say that our Tivo has been fine from day one :)

That PVR is very likely to make a comeback. One of the owners has set up a new company and it is likely that this STB will return for its second generation.

The way STBs work has changed. There is nothing at all stoping community based STBs from providing these kind of functions. In theory Topfield users could add wishlists via 'Taps' which actually has nothing to do with Topfield themselves. Humax also stated that they would not support community based modifications to their STBs but also would not do anything to stop these modifications either.

To be fair mate they are two completely different offerings , VM have gone for a more advanced DVR were BSKYB have chose to keep things simple even in the latest Beta EPG.

People have said on here that Sky+ handles back to back recordings better however I'm not sure with TIVOs updates whether this is still the case.

Sky+HD allows the setting of A) A reminder or B) A single recording or series link from an advert for the show by pressing green.

The new beta EPG planner can now be filtered to find your recordings by Genre which makes finding your recordings easier especially if you've pages of recordings (not sure if this can be done in TIVO so apologies if it can)

That's good to know as Whishlists are of prime importance to me.

There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about that company ATM, but it does suggest that Whishlist functionality could be added to Sky/Freesat/Freeview/Youview boxes. Which surprises me as to why it hasn't been done so far. Maybe, because of Tivo's patents, it could only be a limited implementation? It would be good to know the facts. For me, the more boxes that offer Whishlists and more than 2 tuners, the better.

You can filter the EPG by Genre but you can't filter the list of recorded shows by Genre. The shows are in folders though, so if you have several episodes of a particular show, they are all in one place, which makes the list shorter anyway. You can also play all the shows in a folder, in order of recording, in one go, with the next episode playing automatically.

I guess the reason for this is that Tivo had virtually no visible presence in thr UK for years so no STB manufacturer was that interested in additional features.

Platforms do offer some additional features via apps but it is up to the user to update on the STB side, e.g. FV app offers recommendations based on shows you say you are interested in and Sky offer stuff like Never Miss and Sky showcase and AT. They will probably now move towards access from external devices meaning stuff likr Nevet Miss can be used by the user to directly access the STB via app and update.

There are some excellent STBs out there that are running advanced features via user modifications. A member on AVForum called Raydon has been developing modifications for the Humax Foxsat. That STB can now offer shared planner access, advanced multimedia streaming and archiving of SD and HD material for viewing on external devices.

It does rather beg the question, why should it be necessary (let alone legal) to hack a PVR so that it works as you would prefer? Everyone has different wants but it seems that there is no way to please all of the folk all of the time. I'm merely making an observation, not a criticism or otherwise.

STB's will be controlled by companion apps more and more over the coming years , TIVO in the US already has the excellent IPad app which allows access to my shows , setting recordings actor/director searches , social media plus much more. Sky are also developing a similar companion app allowing you to control your box , view your planner , I personally would rather do all these functions on a companion device as it allows you to continue watching the TV without having to bring menus up.

This is great, but for me, and I suspect many others, we want a PVR, with good functionality, that is manufacturer implemented. That way, we have someone to contact/complain to, if that functionality doesn't work properly.

Not sure I really am that keen to do these things. However I fully agree with the ideal of companion device,if only as a matter of choice. Or better still tell the "young uns" what I want & get them to help out the old fool. The great one spent hours setting up pieces of kit so I just have to press a button. :D
It works every time!!

IMO that is the way forward. I have used many PVRs over the last couple of years and one thing that Sky+HD does very well is record. I know on here people will say that Sky+HD is inferior but the fact is that it is very simple to use and probably has the best EPG available to any PVR making recordings very reliable. Using companion apps would mean it stays as simple as you want but also you can use apps for advanced features.

It would appear both VM TIVO and Sky are certainly wanting to go down the companion app route , VM have already announced the app for iPad , and Sky's companion app is already rumoured to be in development.

Probably because they are not doing mobile properly. There should be one URL and it then adapts when you are on a mobile device.

Reboot the box , my parents had the same issue.

1.Select Help & Settings on the Home screen.
2.Choose Clear or Reset Set Top Box
3.Select Restart

Just seen this on help & support Forum :-

For those moaning about the TiVo's BBC red button services, I think the following article might be of interest.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05/17/bbc_iptv/

Basically, after the Olympics the BBC will be massively scaling back their old red button service (sounds like it will just be a single stream of red button content) and concentrating on red button services delivered over the internet. i.e. TiVo's red button services.

So it might be annoying at the moment, but give it a few months and the TiVo red button will be far superior to that available on other services."

Coming soon  I do hope so. Roll on reminders. Then I might start to join the TiVo fan club :p::rolleyes:

Hello all,

Moved back home so back with virgin media again! Quick question. My old v+ box in my bedroom is knackered. Keeps rebooting constantly and has recording failures. Got an engineer coming out Tuesday.

Questions are:

1) will they replace it with a new v+ or a TiVo box?
2) if they don't give TiVo boxes as replacements for v+ boxes how do I get one? I'm paying 5 quid a month for v+ box and in the xl package
3) do we have the red button on sky sports (random nt TiVo related but just put the sky sports on again today and haven't checked) the last time I had cable was just just when sky sports hd arrived

Hello all glad to be back on here and look forward to the daily ritual of checking media boys blogs haha.

1) If V+ is faulty - they will replace with V+.
2) You could upgrade or switch to a "collection" https://my.virginmedia.com/customer-...llections.html (don't understand the 5.00 but not important).
3) At moment only for F1 (on Sky) - but extras supposedly "coming soon"

Until updates are made, in effect you would lose Red Button and Reminders but gain Suggestions and extra disk space.

No3 is incorrect as we have the red button for football first, Champions league match choice, Tennis, some golf events and several other sports on the RB plus we have The Heineken cup coming at the start of the next season plus several other things in the pipeline.

I think I read somewhere that you can ask the engineer to replace the V+ with a tivo if he's coming out for a service call and he'll do it free of charge. You will have to pay the monthly Tivo fee. Maybe a VM employee can confirm?

I also don't understand the £5 charge you're paying. There is a £5 for V+ if you're on M or L, but that doesn't make sense as you are on XL.

Cheers thanks for the answers. My v+ is a second box thats why I'm paying £5 don't know why I brought that up actually!

Strange how it finished early on your box but maybe some others have had the same problem.

Ah so appears I'd just get another v+. How much is the TiVo monthly cost? Would I pay for it being a second box and then more on top for it being TiVo?

The multi room fee you should be paying for a second box is £6.50, not £5, so not sure why you're paying £5. The Tivo charge is £5 per month.

Some people, when they have got tivo, have been able to keep their V+ box with no multi room charge. But that may just be for people who only had one box and swaped it for Tivo and were allowed to keep the box the tivo was replacing. The rules with VM get very confusing!

Ah it's been a year since I checked the bills so thought it was a fiver still. Mum pays the bills here! Ah smashing so if im paying 6.50 a month for v+ I can get a TiVo for 1.50 a month less? Should I call up on Monday or just speak the engineer on Tuesday? Is the box itself free?

Last questions I promise! Haha thanks for answers

No, the multiroom charge is £6.50 PLUS £5 for Tivo, making the correct total £11.50

Your best plan is to phone retentions and see what deal they can offer you.

If i call up VM and say "i want to swap my v+ box and get a tivo for 5 quid extra month" will they just simply do that or charge me for the box?

i'm debating this since it sounds marvellous. Got the engineer coming tomorrow morning so wonder if its worth calling or just asking the engineer directly.

No real reason just general laziness and the fact i'm in work at the moment and when i finish work i always get through to people who aren't really sure what they're doing. Like they're lovely and everything but on saturday i knew more about the services than they did.

Make sure you call 'retentions' and not general CS. Call 150 and then, IIRC, it's options 1-5-2

Wish i'd seen this earlier! had a nightmare on phone! i'll paste my post on virgin forum:

Hi all,

Had a nightmare on my mobile to virgin media contact centre. I've usually been really impressed with their professionalism and knowledge but completely bemused and annoyed at what i've had. Was on the phone first of all and got through after 5 minutes only for the advisor to state his systems were down and put me on hold. That was fine with me i work on the phone and know the problems i can face. He had me on hold for 14 minutes before he returned and said his systems were still down and he'd have to terminate the call! no offer for general advice whatsoever. I asked if he could transfer me and he said no and hung up on me!

Called back and got through to someone. I have a V+ box and its currently broken. I have an engineer coming tomorrow to fix it/replace it. Asked a general question on Tivo and whether i could pay the increase each month to get a Tivo box fitted instead.

The V+ box is my secondary box anyway in my bedroom. He said it would be 8 quid extra a month? Is this right? He then said it would cost £50.00 installation? Why do we still charge installation even though i'd be paying for a new service and giving virgin media more money a month? Also i already have an engineer coming tomorrow to fix a broken service? Why do i need to still pay!?

Bemused, baffled, confused and generally unhappy for once at the service today. Has something changed with the contact centres virgin media use?

Been with virgin media 10 years and an XL customer

Get ready?

BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/21/12 -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in advanced television services, including digital video recorders (DVRs), for consumers, content distributors and consumer electronics manufacturers, today announced two major enhancements to its whole-home viewing solution. Its IP set-top box, delivers the TiVo experience on secondary televisions throughout the home. TiVo Stream, provides transcoding to enable content viewing on mobile devices.

Through these new products, operators working with TiVo can give their subscribers the content they want on any screen within the home, including secondary televisions, tablets and smart phones and all through the same easy-to-use TiVo interface. For example, the IP set-top box complements the home's primary TiVo DVR by extending the TiVo experience onto secondary TVs including live and recorded television viewing. TiVo Stream delivers content to a customer's tablet or mobile device, creating a cohesive viewing experience no matter how they choose to watch their programs. Both products are optimized for operator distribution, including automated provisioning and activation, and the low-capital costs that operators demand

And can we have this as well?

The Pace XG1 includes 6 video tuners, an integrated DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and at least 500GB of on board hard drive storage. It will utilize TiVo's whole-home capabilities, such as multi-room streaming and support for both traditional set-top boxes and IP devices as clients over MoCA, and support for TiVo's mobile and tablet applications.

I think it's right that if you just wait for the engineer to turn up and then discuss TiVo with them rather than the call centre then they can upsell on the spot and won't charge installation. Somebody else might be able to confirm?

And sometimes, VM plainly take too long, so the complaints are justified. Why is it taking so long to implement multi room streaming for example?

I would expect that it's identifiying the right solution to offer it as a product i.e. the method by which you connect two TiVos together

It's the BBC that will add the content as they have full control over the app, the next likely addition will be Wimbledon

Both of these should have been sorted by now. VM have known of their requirments from the time that they decided to do a deal with Tivo. Tivo has been with customers for almost a year and a half, and there was the lengthy VM/Tivo development time before this.

I would agree. IMO broadcasters in this country seem loath to allow the transfer of HD content between devices or at least only in a limited way.

Hello. I've got two questions if anyone can answer them?

1) how do I get the tv stations picture on the info screen? I've seen people with the e4 icon on the info screen etc

2) I've come home and turned my tv and TiVo on. It's allowing me to rewind back before I even turned the box and tv on! Magical. How does it that? Is it always recording or recorded on virgin server? It's incredible!

3) I heard you can stream youtube videos from an iphone to your tivo box? So search youtube on phone and then get it up via the tivo box on screen? Surely not!
*
4) Can you transfer recordings easily from a tivo? So you can watch on the go? Or is it like the v+ box with dvd recordable player atttached? (not that i can even think how else you could do it..)

5) any good more in depth guides for TiVo than just the virgin manual?

Thanks in advance all

All "standby" does is switch off the audio and video. All three buffers are still... erm... buffering what channels they're on.

No. 3. No idea.

Tivo has been available to customers for around 17 months, and I'm guessing that the development, before release to customers was at least 12 months. So that's around 2.5 years in total.

I have no 'great in-depth knowledge of TV rights negotiations' but common sense suggests that something is wrong if both rights and connectivity can't be sorted out in that time scale.

Also, bear in mind that connectivity is there already; by hooking both boxes up to a router.

Ok so the tec problems are solved. Agree , that leaves "rights" as the only issue. So if it was thought of on 31st Dec 2011 ( Last year ;)) It is still nearly 5 months down the line .

Having said all this I really do not care if it comes or not. It just shows how slow Virgin are at getting things set up:rolleyes:
