It needs a fresh approach with the right players being used in the right positions.

And no flaming Heskey.

Yep, although I disagree about lennon, he has had 2 World Cups and done nothing at either, might be time to have a serious look at him to see if he can cut it at international level.

WOW! Last minute of injury time in extra time. The Uruguay defender handballs to keep the ball from going in, gets sent off, but Ghana miss the penalty! If he hadn't hand balled it they would have been out, he has kept them in but by cheating! Got caught but a penalty is better than a goal I guess

It wasn't a defender, it was Luis Suarez, their best striker alongside Forlan. Suarez scored 35 goals in the Dutch league for Ajax last season.

Fantastic bottle from Gyan to walk up and take the first penalty after missing one that would have won them the match.

Sorry to see Ghana go out. I think Uruguay will sorely miss Suarez though...

Amazing! Uruguay go though! Make no mistake, they would have been out had Suarez not hand balled it out! The ball was going right in at the penultimate touch of the game but the handball stopped the goal, Ghana missed the penalty, and lost at penalties! Amazing.

No worries. I just pointed it out as it's a major loss to the Uruguay team to lose such a prolific striker.

Re: FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa

Some debate as to if Suarez had cheated or not. Some people are saying that this he got caught and a penalty given he was taking advantage of the rules, I think that since it was going in and he stopped it against the rules he cheated. Although why not? It was the difference between them being in the world cup or not. It was the last moment of the game, might as well go for the penalty. Weird one.

Reaction if you ask me.

Like I said it was either that or they go out, I guess they would rather have the red card and the penalty than the goal given because otherwise they would be out. No time left. However it would have happened so fast that it would have been instinctive i think.

If you mean the overhead kick, I disagree. The contact was unfortunate (and full on), but there was no malice or intent in the strike. It wasn't reckless either.

Chile? 61 fouls, 14 yellows and 1 red in 4 games. Holland have 87 fouls, 15 yellows and no red cards, and they played 6 games with 3 of them in the knockout stages.

What`s everyone`s prediction for tonights game?

I`m going Spain to win 2-1. I think they will have sussed the way Germany play and are able to keep the ball better. Also they have a much better/more disciplined back four.
Hers (oops sorry here`s) hoping it`s not a bore draw ending in penalties...

Good win for the Dutch, i hope the country that gave us Amsterdam/tulips and clogs goes on to win the trophy :D

The Golden boot could be decided by who gets knocked out tonight as the 3rd/4th place match is normally a goalfest...

Holland tried to give back posession to Spain after they put the ball out for an injury. Holland knocked it back with a standard back pass but Casillas completely fluffed it up and it went out for a corner. So Holland rolled it back again from the corner and Casillas managed to hold on to it this time.

A few teams in a World Cup final would have taken the corner for real, i'm sure.

I thought Webb had a shocker. He didn't ref like he would have in a Prem game. I can only assume he was under pressure from FIFA to not send people off.

The players constantly haranguing him showed his lack of control. I'm sure millions of public park referees around the world will be suffering for sometime due to his poor performance.

Maybe he was concerned he couldn't keep track of the number of yellow card he'd issued to individuals as has happened with Prem Refs in previous finals :D

In what was a pretty dull game (mainly down to the dutch, allthough Spain didn`t play to well) i found the best bit, which made me fall about laughing was when the dutch left back headed the ball back to his keeper and it was supposedly a cool and composed touch. The replay showed he didn`t have clue where the ball was, it just hit him on the side of the head and wen`t straight to the keeper...............priceless :p:

Because it was top goalscorer and not the golden boot winner they gave reduced odds for the players on the same number of goals. I think I got 1/4 odds.

The Dutch have been criticised for an overly physical approach to the game, after at one point Nigel de Jong pinned down Andres Iniesta whilst Dirk Kuyt attached electrodes to his testicles - an incident Webb deemed sufficient to warrant a yellow card.

There's a funny thread on Red Cafe with photoshops about Arjen Robben. I can't link due to the language but google Red Cafe and the thread is called "Photoshop Arjen Robben" in General Chat.

I think i have post-World Cup depression. It doesn't feel like it should be over and i can't get back into normality. I spent 3 weeks in South Africa and i can honestly say i had the time of my life, and i can't wait to go back. Roll on Brazil 2014!

How you get tickets for all the games you seemed to go too?

What did you think about the World Cup in the end? I am torn, The noise was horrible for the first couple of weeks (then either people stopped the Vuvuzelas, or the TV Companies found a way to tune it out), some of the pitches were poor and the stadiums not full. I heard transport was poor as well.

On the other hand the African vibe give it a district personality and style that one could argue was missing from the German World Cup, and a sense that hosting it there made the World Cup feel truly global and uniting. I think that overall it increased the respect and allure of the tournament.

For the first world cup held in Africa I thought it was a great success and the grounds, infrastructure, security, staff and population did really well..

The only thing to let it down for me were a few of the teams who seemed to play without much spirit.

As for the vuvuzellas once I set the TV sound up correctly it wasn't that much of an issue and as with any constant sound the brain soon tuned it out.

 Well done South Africa

Nationwide has dropped their sponsorship of the England football team. But news that the Football Association today proudly unveiled Total, fcuk and UPS as the new sponsors of the England football team. 'The combination of these three corporate giants perfectly captures the ethos of the England side,' said an FA spokesman. 'After all, they had nothing in the tank when it counted, and they've proved themselves to be a bunch of expensive posers who always fail to deliver.'

And a bloke "looking for the toilet" getting into a teams dressing room. It wasn't great security really, on both occasions it could have been a lot worse due to the lax security.

to be honest I found a lot of the football for this WC as uninspiring. Most of the matches seemed to be dull and it just seemed to be teams getting a result rather than seeing the best players in the world on show.

Guess the only team that had a run of good matches was the Germans

True, I'd forgotten about that one. However, just look at the list of invasions that bloke has to his name: eurovision, F1 grand prix, Roland Garos finals, European Cup finals and semi finals, Champion's league finals (twice). I think it's a bit too easy to claim that security in SA was particularly lax.

I think given the build up, the security went quite well.

Everyone was saying that all tourists will be mugged, then car jacked, then raped and then finally murdered in 4 separate incidents, within 1 day of landing.

There wasn't really any of that, that I know of.

That Jimmy Jump is a nutter. The amount of times he's probably been beaten up by rent-a-thugs in suits or by stewards doesn't bear thinking about.

Sepp Blatter was awarded 'The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in Gold' in April this year for his support in South Africa gaining the World Cup.

The SA Government website has an interesting name for him...

I didn't mind the noise in the beginning anyway, and in fact i ended up enjoying it. It's completely different when you're actually among it and perhaps because of that, even watching on TV i enjoy it now. It's different and gave the World Cup a truly unique feeling. The fact that so many people around the world were oblivious to vuvuzelas beforehand, just shows how varied football culture is around the world and for most people they were experiencing something completely new to a sport they probably thought they knew all about - even if most TV viewers didn't like it, i think that's great.

A good point i heard also, was how unifying they were too. A simple, unique tool which allowed everyone to feel part of the World Cup. Many, if not most foreign fans embraced them and even those who didn't probably bought one as a souvenir at least.

Oh, and if you were lucky enough to be close enough to groups of the more dedicated South African football fans, like i was at Nigeria vs Greece in Bloemfontein in particular, then this was the sort of thing going on in the stands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCg4l99qE1M - but like i said previously, the real, mixed, energetic atmospheres generally don't seem to come through over TV. In addition, i was told by somebody (a rugby fan who'd never been to a football match beforehand) that when he attended the Soweto derby between Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with some workmates, the atmosphere was incredible as everyone was in unison with the vuvuzelas and the accompanying chants and songs. As opposed to the sporadic use, which inevitably and understandably occurs among the more casual and foreign fans.

As far as i'm aware it was only Port Elizabeth's pitch which was poor. The stadiums i visited were great. Soccer City is easily the best stadium i've ever seen, inside and out it's magnificent. A few photos i took:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_x7Iu4S5uVWo/TD...2020.00.43.jpg

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_x7Iu4S5uVWo/TD...2021.47.11.jpg

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_x7Iu4S5uVWo/TD...2023.34.05.jpg

Some matches weren't full, but this is down to a number factors such as FIFA's ticket selling and transfer process, the pricing, etc. It's no reflection at all on how into the World Cup that South Africans (of all types) were. Many of which had never even watched a football match before, yet were as enthusiastic as anyone.
It's not near as big a deal as some people are making out though, plenty of World Cups had such an amount of empty seats or more, and the attendances this year outdid France 1998, Japan/South Korea 2002 etc etc.

Transport i can't really comment that much on, as i don't drive and i planned my trip so it would consist just of walking, taxis, planes, and coaches. All of which were good. I only used a park and ride for Soccer City and Ellis Park, both were fine, though the latter was a bit hectic with the queuing system on the return trip.

Also, though i've heard the whole "All Africa" stuff on ITV was cheesy and overblown, but it's actually true really. South Africans really did get behind Ghana when South Africa went out (some of the TV pundits were almost in tears when Ghana beat USA) and even personally speaking i know Egyptians, Algerians, Nigerians, Tunisians, South Africans etc anyway and generally they all support other African teams before anyone else and all were 100% behind Ghana when their own teams went out. Apart from a couple of Nigerians of course, as they're rivals.
The enthusiasm for other teams didn't stop at Ghana though, people picked a team and got behind them. Face paint, makarapas, vuvuzelas, costumes, flags and whatever else included.

Yep.

I think many people must realise much of the pessimism about South Africa had very little to do with any genuine concern for visitors, South Africans or the tournament running smoothly. The fact that people seriously expressd concern about South Africa after the Togo bus attacks in Angola speaks volumes.
I doubt we'll be seeing many, if any, apologies or retractions from the people who've done so much scaremongering in the last few years. Some of the stuff was just plain ridiculous and unfortunately some people lapped it up. Countries like Netherlands, USA, Mexico etc etc were fortunate enough not to have parts of the media shoving their agenda down the publics throat and many of their fans in South Africa were virtually oblivious to the sort of stuff the British and German media peddled.

This about sums it up:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/07/32.jpg
http://www.zapiro.com

It'll be interesting to see how the scaremongering goes for Brazil, i'm sure it's already getting started.

A common pitch invader and an unarmed man walking into an area he wasn't authorised to be in, during a month long tournament of 64 matches, 3 million+ spectators, and 9 cities. I think that's harsh at the best of times, let alone considering the doomsday expectations.
