Thank you!

Well, I have been waiting ages and ages for my upgrade and so far nothing. I wish Virgin Media did not hype to everyone about the upgrade and rather contacted the people in the areas that were getting the upgrade first.

Hi Guys, just a quick question, what is the process for VM to upgrade us from 2 to 10 mb ?
Is it just turning on a switch or what cos I don't have a clue
I'm just Curious how it's done.
Thanks.
Mike.

Did you get that upgraded last year from 4Mb if so nothing this time around.:)

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Interesting. So i'm paying more than half the other people who will be on 10meg, because i was on a higher package before this upgrade? And no doubt we'll be shaped at peak time even more than before?

So can i ring tomorrow and downgrade to what was 2mb? And pay less for the same 10mb speed? Or am i missing some vital info?

Yes you are. You get double the STM that people on BB M 10Mbit will get

see www.virginmedia.com/traffic

It is not possible to downgrade to BB M as it no longer exists for anyone not already on it

Pia 23-05-2009 22:08

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Sooo for the extra £££ a month i pay, all i get in return is a better probability that i'll be able to get a slightly bigger fraction of the speed i actually pay for?

I have yet to upgrade my connection and was wondering if anyone has had any problems during or after the upgrade? Like, has anyone been unable to access the internet or had their connection speed slashed?

Well according to the myaccount page on the virgin site, we are now on 10MB M
but only get this on speedtest? Definitely not 10MB

(Though i'm sure that upload is about the right speed)

Are you using an ethernet cable or a USB cable as you should only use ethernet.

Ethernet to USB adapter, when we first got Virgin BB a few years ago, can't remember why we have it though.

My neighbour had the same problem a while back and I found out they were using that adapter. I took it out and plugged the modem into their ethernet socket in the pc and on came the full speed.

You may have open the browser and go to go into tools>internet options and clear the cookies, history and temporary internet files.

It should not affect your router just connect them up the same as your old modem and reboot them in sequence, turn modem on first let the sync and ready settle then switch the router on.

Well as you will see my results above and I have the new modem, so doesn't appear to make much difference.

I am slightly confused at the speed I see when I test on speedtest.net

Yes you will need a New modem from NTL, you will not get 10 Gb on that modem!

Are you shore that you have been upgraded to 10 Gb ? If Yes try reboot your modem then reboot your router and you may need to reboot your computer as well.

[Edit]

I see that you have been upgraded by looking at post #377 as I sed try reboot your modem then reboot your router and you may need to reboot your computer as well.

I have tried this by going to the modem setup and resetting, which I believe is the same as turning the modem off, right?

You are a star, I downloaded and ran the TCPOptimizer, and as I have Windows 98, it performed with no problems, and I now get speed results that relate to my current 10 meg speed.

What I have noticed however is I use Firefox right, so if I have the option selected for Direct connection to the internet then I get these good results, but as I use Avast it needs to have a local host for a proxy, this is so it can capture any malware etc when browsing web pages.

But if I add the local host then the browsing and download speed checks start to show around 4 to 5 meg.

So I kind of thought that it would not be wise to have a direct connection purely for the fact that my anti virus Avast would be kind of disabled as far as web shield is concerned.

Thoughts folks?

I can assure you that by using the modem config tools then resetting is the same as re-booting the modem, it goes through the very same light changes etc.

By the way I don't have a router.

Its much quicker just to pull out the power lead for 5 seconds, and that is what I would ask you to do if you called in.

Well it would appear that my area of Brighton has been upgraded. But please don't all cheer at once 'cos it's hardly any faster.

I stopped paying for the L broadband service last year because I felt VM were unable to deliver what they promissed. I supose that being as this upgrade is 'free' I shouldn't have expected to get what they promissed.

Would have been nice to be wrong for once though. :(

New manchester server been added to speedtest.net, Ping from here in Liverpool is better to Maidenhead than it is to Manchester, how does that work?

joglynne 27-05-2009 20:32

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

I'm actually in Manchester and using SpeedTest.net on the 2 servers the ping is still better going to Maidenhead than just going up the road. Not that I would know what to do with a ping if I saw one. :D

Having now read so many of these 'speed' threads I understand that these test sites are not overly accurate at the best of times as far as speeds go so I have no idea whether they are any more accurate recording the mystic ping. :dunce:

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Results for the 10meg service.

This shows how much a proxy can reduce the speed test results, and also it can depend on which browser you use as you will see by my final test, wow, look at that speed for the 10 meg package.

The first result is using Firefox with a direct connection to the internet.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/05/15.png

This one is using Firefox with a proxy server.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/05/16.png

This is using Internet Explorer 6 with the same proxy server.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/05/17.png

And this is using Internet Explorer without the proxy direct connection to the internet.

Thanks.

As you have seen the timetable that means you should now be registered to recieve the upgrade automatically

However, if you don't register you won't get the upgrade till October

So I'll just have to put up with 2mb for now.

Sorry I think I can not be making my self clear.

Do I need to do anything to get the upgrade on my PC -when it is ready.
in other words even if its upgraded at Virgins end. Would I need to reboot my modem to get it to work or does it just happen as and when its upgraded?

Also when its done will I be advised or is it (in my case) pure luck that I will notice it! After using my PC at work ( .5mg on a BT line its as fast as we can get !!!) 2mg at home seems fast to me.:dozey:

I registered a couple of weeks ago in response to VM's email. Got a mailing from VM today stating "Good news! Your up to 10Mb broadband upgrade is here." I know fully well the upgrade hasn't reached us here yet, so no wonder customers are moaning.

Not only that but the wasted postage when I'd already registered, and they also print your main e-mail address behind the not very well stuck flap on the mailing.

You probably will not be told of the upgrade so best thing is every day or so
reboot the modem and do a speed check . you will spot the speed jump from that

For referance Guildford area seems not Done yet . am in gu14 farnborough 1.97 IS
Best i get on 2meg

I reboot mine every day but that is because I need to as I am swapping over connections, I would recommend rebooting at least once a week though just to allow for any updates.

I have had people call in over slow speeds and they say that they have upgraded from 2Mb to 20Mb and never got that speed, and this has been weeks later, I say did you reboot the modem and they say I never do that as the connection is fine, so get them to reboot and suddenly they get 20Mb, at which point they moan and I say well you should have rebooted, call ends.

Yes, isn't it incredible how silly people can be? You might almost imagine that they weren't informed of the need to reboot their modems at the time they ordered their upgrades. :dozey:

Quite true but at least I have no dealings with that side only faults.

But some people forget what they are told or even ignore it.

Some upgrade online and never reboot as well.

No longer an issue.
There used to be years ago issues where by if you left your modem off for too long it wouldnt work properly again.
This issue now hardly exists. I have left my modem off for about two weeks and turned it back on and it was fine.

Just make sure that if you do turn it off, you turn everything back on in order. eg. First turn on modem, then router, then computers.

Just received the "Great news! Your up to 10Mb broadband upgrade is here" leaflet. Does that mean that a magic reboot should now upgrade me? I registered ages ago and if not should i get whiny in the nicest possible way?

The 10Mbps config has been applied to your modem, it just hasn't taken full effect and should do within twelve hours.

As Mags says it should be instant if it is in the config and his upstream is the 10Mb upstream so the must be a fault.

It should be instant immediately after you reboot, the only way it could have stayed low was if you were being traffic managed at that time.

Is anyone here from the Cardiff area still not received their upgrade? I know on the timetable it says Cardiff will be upgraded in May but given we are in the last day of May now I'm getting a bit worried. A friend of mine was upgraded last weekend, but despite resetting the modem every morning I'm still getting 2mb/256kb

In the CF23 area, registered on virginmedia.com for the upgrade a few weeks ago, still reporting as being on the broadband package of 2mb.

Are you sure you're on a Cardiff CMTS? Some of CF23 is on Pentwyn. Click the Connection link at the top of this page. If the answer includes pnwn, you're on Pentwyn. (Something like cpc3-pnwn8-0-0-cust143.cdif.cable.ntl.com)

I assumed that you were using an Ambit modem for that link to work.

As you can see from what you posted that you are still on 2Mb and when your speed increase the config will change from 2148000 to 1024000.

I was upgraded from 2>>10 about 8 days ago..

Since then my speed has seldom been above 3mb..generally about 1.5.

Today it has been a consistent 1mb..OR LOWER...

Modem is a NTL200, connected by Ethernet..

I was generally better off before the "upgrade"

I'm in CF23, I registered for the upgrade at the beginning of May, as I was still waiting, I phoned C.S. on Friday, who said that there was nothing on the system to say I had register.
Anyway, did it over the phone: the cable modem says that it's got the 10mb download, but the maximum I get via speedtest is 5.5mb.
