Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Just because the Indian Navy went for the cheaper Rafale it doesn't mean that it couldn't be developed for the UK carriers.. I know that I'd rather have a carrier based typhoon than a F-35 or the Rafale ;)

DocDutch 04-03-2012 14:10

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Well the rafale is pretty decent but wouldn't mind the carrier version of the gripen either

Kymmy 04-03-2012 14:16

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Only reason why India went for the Rafale over the Typhoon is costs.. They're already running Mirage 2000's and there's a lot of cross-over in tech/training/etc..

That's one of the reasons as to why the Tyhoon would be a great choice for the navy (with the other being that it's far more capable than the Rafale) in that in terms of current training/tech/longterm costs a carrier version would not only be capable but also workable/affordable in the long term.

Our carrier strategy is in less of a mess than the BBC article that tried to explain it ... What an awful, garbled piece of journalism that was. Why the hack couldn't just stick with the common Type-A, Type-B, Type-C convention widely used over many years for the Conventional, STOVL and carrier variants of the F35 is beyond me.

That exercise wouldn't have F22's participating.. More than likely to be doing practice for Joint Warrior which is a major exercise taking place on the 16th to the 26th April off the Scottish coast. Be aware Chris is that if you have a GPS you may find problems with it during the exercise if you live far enough north.

Interesting, if it ever happens:

British and Burmese authorities could work together to find 20 Spitfires buried in Burma at the end of the World War II, officials say.
The planes were buried in 1945 by the RAF amid fears that they could either be used or destroyed by Japanese forces, but in the intervening years they have not been located.

At the time they were unused, still in crates, and yet to be assembled.

I can actually say that I have worked on that aircraft when I was an Avionics Corporal at RAF Wyton until 1991.

And according to this http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/39squadron.cfm the PR9's were still going strong until 2006.

We were almost involved in the 1st Gulf War but at that time they couldn't guarantee the safety of the aircraft or crew.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

I think the decision has been more or less forced, sadly, thanks to decisions taken in office by Labour. The decision to build two ma-hoosive penis extension supercarriers and then equip them with fighters designed for light carriers (i.e. the Invincible class, one of which is still slated to remain rather pointlessly in service, sans aircraft, until 2014) was always rather batty. Liam Fox saw the logic of equipping supercarriers with aircraft designed to get the maximum benefit of their size and pursued orders for F35-C instead, accompanied with a plan to retro-fit the cats and traps to the carriers, but the fact is, retro-fitting that kit was always going to be more expensive than building it into the design from the drawing board and the cost has gone through the roof. The country can barely afford the carriers as it is; something had to give and I think they have now made the best of a bad job.

What should have happened from the outset was a decision either to build a new generation of light carriers with F35-Bs embarked, or one or two new supercarriers with F35-Cs and the attendant catapults and arrestors. Why Labour decided to mismatch STOVL aircraft with a supercarrier runway is anybody's guess, but now we're stuck with it.

The only possible consolation is that the most famous supercarrier of them all, USS Enterprise, has been in service now for more than 50 years. If our new QE-class carriers have anything like that longevity, they should live to see economically happier times and the next generation of aircraft to be stationed aboard them might just be 'proper' carrier fighters.

RIP Trevor Roche who died today flying a vintage DH53 at Shuttleworth which is only about 10 miles north of me.. The crash subsequently forced the cancellation of the air display due today.

Impressive video - for those, like me who were wondering about MSN 5:

MSN 5 was due to be used for tests as well, but as it would only have been available for the last six months of the campaign it was decided to suspend its construction because the company wanted to have the final aircraft in the flight test programme to be equivalent to subsequent production aircraft. This will also allow improvements that result from the first year of flight test to be integrated on the aircraft.

For Red Arrow fans a great slideshow is on the BBC website.

Please note though that it also does cover the sad loss of Flt Lt Jon Egging and Flt Lt Sean James

Some amazing footage of low level Buccaneer passes in this compilation, especially at 00:30 - 00:45 & 03:48!

Another shot of an extremely low level Buccaneer pass:

During the International Air Tattoo in 1993, to mark the squadron's 75th birthday, this Buccaneer S.2B was flown at an altitude of just 5 feet for the entire length of RAF Fairford's runway. From inside the massive strike aircraft, it must surely have felt as though they were actually in the ground. Thank God for ground effect.
