When I want to reset the modem, do I unplug it or just press the reset button on the back. I read somewhere that unplugging gave the fastest reconnection, is this true?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

surely someone at virgin could update the upgrade page and move the tbc to actual dates. Every project has key dates which should be available to the users. estimated dates are better than tbc!

THUNDER1 05-05-2008 19:13

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

already posted afew pages ago that inside dates fro descent sources now pushing late august / september before all areas are 10mb. its weird their doing all the outer areas first eg nottingham outer , leics etc. You 'd of thought they would do the odd centre first to see the impact. anyways NG4 nottingham still 3.5mb

I was wondering what area I'm under on the Virgin 'Where's my upgrade?' page.

I'm in Petersfield.

I have a Guildford postcode - GU31.

The Guildford area - Farnborough, Camberly, Woking, Aldershot, Fleet, Guildford - Completed.

But alas I'm still on 4mb. Can somebody tell me which area I'm to watch for news of the upgrade date?

Mine is straightforward but you might be able to figure out which area you're in from the location of the UBR.

You've done the old 'turn it off and on again' routine with your modem, I guess?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I'm in Nottingham (NG9) and I'm still only getting 3.7Mbps. I've done all the modem reboots etc, but still no change. The "Even Faster Page" on VM's site states that the only areas which are still "TBC" in Nottingham are Chesterfield and Grimsby.

Does this mean that I should have been upgraded now, or is NG9 part of an area which is not classed as Nottingham?

bmxbandit 06-05-2008 08:12

I think it means the whole of the Nottingham area, stretching as far as Chesterfield and Grimsby. No change here in NG9 either...

Done the old turn off and on. Well did on the 1st and the 3rd but not since.

If I click on the connection button, I'm told that I'm not on Virgin Media!? Shame that as I'm on their 4mg connection.

Using another website, I have found out - cpc1-horn2-0-0-cust898.cos2.cable.ntl.com

Any other way to find the host I'm with?

Your UBR is EX-Telewest, to check your region please post the region code from the top of your bill.

Hi Gingerbread Man

You are on the Cosham 2 UBR, and looks like the Horndeen 2 card.

My is cpc3-fare4-0-0-cust***.cos2.cable.ntl.com, which means I'm on the Fareham 4 card on the Cosham 2 UBR.

You are on the ex-NTL (now VM) network (formally ex-C&W (Cable & Wireless)). Same as me :).

Out of interest, what different information would http://tools.virginmedia.com/ give about your UBR that the 'connection' button on the cable forums task bar above can give you? I have tried both and seem to get exactly the same information.

You can save it as a bookmark and use the other tools on their, the ones that are not at the top of this page. Remember not everyone is confident of going into the DOS screen, for that reason alone it is a worthwhile post.

If you click on the connection tab at the top of the page , you'll see something like the following.
cpc2-staf1-0-0-*****.sol2.cable.ntl.com
That is my address, obviously yours will be different. The staf1 bit says I'm in Stafford. Easy isn't it?Now you try , instead of guessing. It has little to do with postcodes.More to do with how your broadband reaches you.

Thanks for the reply, just checked the link and it does give the estimated time of the update. What I meant was, when we upgraded from 2-4 under NTL they had a link that forced the update into your modem.

The best way is to actually switch of the power to reboot the modem and it will receive all updates and revised Docsis file for your speed if upgraded, all I can advise is to do this periodically.:)

They do seem to have slowed down but by the end of May they should have 15 complete, in 3 months, that's 5 per month and with 33 still to go - I think they need to pull their finger out else it might not be the end of summer when they've finished, at least not this British one :p:

Strange - I will be paying the same for 10Mb as I am currently for 4Mb; seems like a free upgrade to me (which is completely different, imho, from part of the revenue from my payments being used for network repairs and maintenance :dozey:). I don't remember any of my other utility suppliers giving me extra electricity/gas/water for the same price as I was paying.

Is BB a utility?? If so then i guess you would class telephone as utility and therefore your free minutes may have increased at some point in the past?

You appear to have a 20Mb upload speed with that 735 kbps so if you are are 10Mb thats odd?

I'm also in Gosport and still on 4Mb.

Status page still shows 'TBC' for Cosham UBR (inc. Fareham, Gosport, etc).

Does this mean that I should have been upgraded now, or is NG9 part of an area which is not classed as Nottingham?

UPDATE: Following an email to VM last week, they replied to say that my modem needed upgrading. They scheduled an engineer to come out on Monday 12th May - which he did. The problem apparently is the modem - I had an Ambit ntl:Home 120, but this has now been replaced FOC with a modem which can deliver the increased speeds.

And I'm now upgraded to 10Mb! :)

Last night at peak time around 8pm I was getting downloads of c 8500Kb/s. Pretty damn good I'd say. The engineer said he was replacing quite a lot of these modems every day.

Thanks for that, but I dont think it is my modem as i used to be on the 20mb/s package and received full speed, like i said before. NG5 has alot of students and a big university, any guesses why its not upgraded yet :(

I don't remember any of my other utility suppliers giving me extra electricity/gas/water for the same price as I was paying.

Strange logic.
To clarify a little (well maybe) I personally have what I consider a below average deal with VM for 4Mb and, hopefully, I'll have an above average deal when I get 10Mb - I'll still be paying them even if it is the same price, so where is the free bit? If VM instead of raising the speed they had dropped the price for 4Mb where would the free bit be in that deal? VM really don't have any choice in upgrading - it's the nature of their business.

Just a thought, if the price had increased in line with access speed then for 10 Mb I'd be paying nearly 700 times the price I paid when I first access the net  It's a good job the network speed/price system doesn't work that way rather more exponentially (Moore's Law, Butter's Law).

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

And guess what ..... now the speed has dropped back to around 3835kbps. I just cannot understand what the hell is going on. New modem installed Monday 12th May - initially got a faster speed, then back to the same old speed as before.

Did several speed tests this morning at 9:10am - not exactly a peak time, and they all average about 3800kbps, with one exception of up to 6011kbps.

Any ideas on what is going on - other than the typically poor service we seem to get from VM.

Many web speed testers are inaccurate -- try downloading multiple files at the same time? (There's a fuller explanation and lots more useful information on Annie's Broadband FAQ.)

Unusual economic methodology - you/we/one agreed a price when you/we/one took up the service (even if you consider it a "below average deal"), you/we/one are getting a 150% download speed increase, and you don't see what you are getting for free - we will have to agree to disagree on this one, methinks.

Yeah, all makes sense now. Thanks people.

So you and me both will have to wait patiently.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

VM recently upgraded by modem, and I wrongly asumed that this meant 10Mb was actually available in my area. So I emailed Tech Support, and they replied to my question to say that VM plan to have everything rolled out by the end of Sept. I'm in Nottingham, which is still TBC.

So ... who knows?
