Re: MERGED - Euro 2004

I was in the middle of writing you all a letter of condolance last night but himself came in and I had to offer sympathy here so I never finished it.

However in my attempts to cheer him up I touched on a very sore issue.I mentioned that they may possibly in the next two years have got it together enough for the World Cup.He said that he didn't care about the WC :shocking: as he didn't think they would be good enough but that he really thought that they only stood a chance of winning in Europe but not the WC.

Is this why the over the top support was so over the top?

Incog. :) Who will no doubt have to listen to the students moaning and b*tching about the ref AGAIN today.

Maybe I can cheer them up by pointing that they have two years to work on penalty shootouts.Or maybe not!

Incorrect, just ask Spain.

I said a few days ago that the extra days rest would count against us. In the Croatia match towards the end Gerrard looked dead on his feet, Beckham looked like a tired old man in the post match interview, after that game as well. Gerrard had one of his worst games last night and the midfield four with the exception of Lampard looked jaded. I thought the disallowed goal was a bad decision but had it been the other way round, I would be inclined to agree that Terry did have his arm on the goalkeeper.;)

Question, Has David Beckham scored from the spot since he did that advert with Jonny Wilko, hoofing balls over the bar.:(

Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole and Gary Neville all played very well.

Re: MERGED - Euro 2004

Sorry I was wrong about penalty shootouts for England. As iadom said. England have had 5 shootouts since 1990 in World and European championships. Only 1 have we won. That was in 1996 Euro champions.Against Spain. We won 4-2 on penalties. That was the only time. Lost all the others. 1 out of 5. Not good enough. By the way, the following match after Spain in the Euro 96 was with Germany. We lost on penalties. So as I said we are not good enough. Mind you I still support them. It's just that I can't see them winning a world cup again or indeed a euro cup for the 1st time unless they do some drastic changes of playing style and training.

Re: MERGED - Euro 2004

Not really, we just need to play like we do in the premiership, attack as much as possible, they can't go forward IF we attack non ?

Re: MERGED - Euro 2004

For most of the time England were the most tired, lack lustre team I have ever seen. They were robbed in my opinion by that disallowed goal, but in the end the better team on the day won.

According to a report on 5 Live, the Swizz:rolleyes: referee has since stated that he blew for a foul committed by Sol Campbell, before he even went up for the header.

Did you have France in the sweep? Is that why you're mad? ;) :D

I just think in way, it's good to have the usual suspects out of the way. Let someone else win something for a change.

What a bunch of a*sholes :dozey:
Quote:

A violent mob of England supporters besieged a Portuguese-run pub last night after their team's defeat on penalties in Euro 2004.

Police had to escort a group of Portuguese fans, including children, to safety after they were trapped in the Red Lion hotel in Thetford, Norfolk for more than two hours in what officers described as a "terrifying" ordeal.

Witnesses said that a mixed group of supporters watched the game peacefully inside the pub. But within minutes of England's defeat on penalties, a hostile crowd of around 200 people gathered outside and tried to enter the pub, hurling stones and bottles. Portuguese fans inside barricaded the pub doors with tables.

Sergio Queiroz, the pub manager, said: "It was terrible, there was blood everywhere and people were frightened for their lives. These English fans just wanted to attack us because they had lost the match."

Police reinforcements were called in from neighbouring Suffolk and dogs were used to contain the violence. A number of the pub's windows were smashed and the pub manager's car was set on fire.....

One thing I like about the tournament so far is that the negative teams have all dropped out (I will excuse Greece for clinging onto their 1-0 lead). Though I wouldn't call France negative, they did look a little complacent.

I think it can only be a good thing that the creative, attacking sides are doing well. :)

I have had a good tournament & only watched the England games, so far :erm:

Holland won it in 88 (Van Basten/Rijkaard/Gullit). I think The Czechs have won it in the past as well.

Interesting/irrelevant stats: This is only the 12th european championship. Untill 1980 it was not very popular at all. In the 60s (when it was first held), it was a straight knockout tournament between 4 teams. Don;t know how they qualified though.

Go err, damn. I was actually cheering for England here at school, among the 3 people that watched the game in a corner of the student life center. Someone even had a big white flag with a red cross draped over his shoulders. Ah well. I'm not into soccer, but I was cheering for England just because, well, they are anglophones. :)

Better luck next time.

Holland are through on penalties (0-0 after 120 mins). Very tight game, very little between the teams. Holland were due to win a penalty shootout though. They lost all four penalty shootouts they played before this one...

No, only Gary Neville Played "very well".

Sol was a little better than that and Ashley Cole played the game of his life. He was brilliant!

Cole was so good it was funny, almost no one could get past him and towards the end of the match I was cracking up at how superb he was, especially seeing as some people said he couldn't defend. The way that he was peeing all over fake Ronaldo for the best part of 120 minutes was the funniest thing I've seen in ages.

Well that was a complete bloody waste of time, we could have stopped after the first match. Greece v Portugal in the final.;)

The loss of Pavel Nedved was as damaging to the Czech's as Rooney's early departure for England. Well done Greece and the Bolton Wanderers, ex Leicester City, ex Sheffield Utd players and the rest of the team, they look a very fit side.
With the exception of Figo and Ronaldo very few "galacticos" from the Premiership, La Liga or Serie A have reached the final. I think that this competition has come to soon for the "superstars" they are all knackered.

Yes, I have heard this mentioned as a reason for why the big footballing nations have all gone out early. The leagues their players are in are all so heavy that their players just aren't as fit as the smaller nations' players. Still, nice to see the small ones do well. :)

Genuine fans would be slightly down and then pick themselves up and start thinking about the World Cup. ;)

Well done Greece. It would have been nice to see the winning team go for the second goal, rather than defend the lead, but hey, they've taken some scalps. They definitely deserved the win tonight. Portugal never seemed to threaten them really. :tu: :)
