Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Got a letter from NTL this morning stating that they will be contacting me in the next couple of months to arrange a date to exchange my STB.
The letter says that in order to get the new 1.5mb service a new STB is required and this is going to be exchanged free of charge :) There's also a picture of the new box, although i cant tell what make etc it is, but its nice and shiny silver :) Im in a ex-cable and wireless area, so it looks like the current pace STB box that I have isnt capable of the new speed increase. CAnt wait for the new box to arrive. |

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Yup - I understand there are some swap outs going on. Not that the Pace can't do 1.5Mb, the one on my desk does and believe me it's damn quick (176Kbytes/s sustained). However, I don't watch TV on it since someone nicked my TV so I can't say if it affects that, or interactive, or makes the box play Cliff Richard records or some other ghastly side-effect.

BBKing you have 1.5mbit already?

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Current information that I can tell you :)
Upgrades to the infrastructure are continuing for the increases - a lot of money is being spent. Large resegmentations are being carried out to increase available bandwidth - this includes new cards that give 2 downstream & 8 upstream channels per card instead of the current 1d to 6u. (but any talk of higher upstream speeds is still just rumour ;)). These measures should help areas where there is currently congestion. A lot of new fibre is having to be installed as well for these upgrades, which takes time. Also, a load of new proxy (netapp caches) are going to be installed in all areas. There is a lot more I would love to tell you, but it's still hush hush atm, so I can't reveal it. Oh, and there is still no final date other than the current end of summer (or before if it's ready). |

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
I just want to define the end of summer if it hasnt already been defined:
"The official end of summer is the autumnal equinox. The autumnal equinox happens on September 22 and it marks the end of summer and start of autumn." A cool fact (but unrelated): "On that day of the autumnal equinox the day and night are exactly the same length." I will stick with NTL till then to see how they get on with their 'upgrades'. plus.net unlimited 2meg service for £39-99 is tempting though :) [I wanted a pray hands smilie but couldnt find one - makes me sad] |

In all honesty £12 I think is about right for the lower BB service, during the summer I was actually thinking of dropping the service as with everything the cost of the phone,TV and BB all adds up to over £30 a month and its simply not worth that, Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢d rather pay more for a new house or car than a Utility |

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
BT Broadband Basic - £19.99 a month, with 1 GB download capacity
BT Broadband - £24.99, 15GB BT Yahoo! Broadband - £26.99, 15GB BT Broadband 1Mb - £28.99, 30GB BT Yahoo! Broadband 1Mb - £29.99, 30GB or Wanadoo 512K - £17.99 a month, with 2 GB download capacity Tiscali Broadband X3 - £15.99 I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t download a lot so yeah it could do me a treat, I do play the odd game and email and browse the net and thatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s about it, sorry I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t live on the thing!!!:Yikes: Enjoy your downloads!!!!!:p: |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Sadly I will have to stick to NTL as my BT phoneline can only accomodate a 512kb/s service.
No good to me!!! I have never had any problems with NTL but am just itching for faster speeds. Although I have to say that I think most people would prefer a higher upload than download?? |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Same here no probââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s with NTL I just want better value for my money. My 128K hardly sets the grass on fire for itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s £17.99
The more competition the better, the only service I nearly changed to was Tiscali as a few of my friends are on it and getting more value for money. It looks faster but thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s probably due to the numbers using it in our area at the moment. |

I do think its a nice deal for people who dont download all the time, but for others its just not good enough...what do they do? I for one will just download as much as i want, not worrying about some cap. |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Nah no offence taken:) , I understand that some want to download, god I have a friend downloading all day and night, wither he actually uses his machine is another thing but it sits there always downloading something.
But too me Wanadoo 512K - £17.99 a month, with 2 GB download capacity Is great as I pay 17.99 for 128K and I only use e-mail, browse the net and play the odd game and I to be fair I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t know what that uses up. When the say download capacity does that include upstream net stuff like playing games and receiving e-mail? Or is it purely downloading? |

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Its all right posting all these prices but to keep things balanced there is still plenty of adsl packages unmetered.
pipex 1mbit unmetered £33.99 or 2 gig limit £28.99 pipex 512kbit unmetered £23.44 or 1 gig limit £19.99 nildram dsl500 PAYG £15.99 dsl1000 PAYG £23.99 dsl2000 PAYG £31.98 all 1 gig or 50 hours usage dsl500 £25.99 dsl1000 £34.99 dsl2000 £44.99 all no limit difference here is other isp's give you a choice and even the unmetered packages are cheaper then ntl's metered packages, considering both the above isp's dont use transperent proxies either you have to wonder whats going on with ntl. |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
plusnet
unmetered prices 512k 21.99 1024k 30.99 2048k 38.99 so for 1 extra pound you get double download bandwidth and no cap and no proxies, even after ntl speed upgrade ntl look absolutely abysmal with this. also take into consideration adsl prices have 256k upload on the 512k packages. ntl really need someone new in marketing. |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Quote:
300K - 17.99 750K - 24.99 1.5Mb - ?? The upload doesn't concern the masses who want what they consider to be the best value deal, i.e. they want free install, free connection, and a low monthly sub, ideally, free or half price for the first month. If there's one thing ntl don't need to worry about it's marketing broadband to the masses. |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Quote:
> Permit me to disagree. :upyours: If Wanadoo can do 512K for £17.99 per month, then NTL certainly need to sack their sales staff. :knock: I am "one of the masses", I DON'T care about free installation and connection, OR a "free or half-price for the first month" carrot. I DO care about speed per pound and consider that "best value deal" proposers believe Yorkshiremen say"Eeh bah goom!" and Scots chew heather. I have been waiting in the dark since the initial promise of doubling my 150K speed during late June, which stopped me from going elsewhere. Now I find, thanks to this great forum - no thanks to NTL at all, I have to wait until "late Summer"for an inferior deal than offered elsewhere. And while I'm in full flow, I disagree with selfish customers who sabotage an ISP's attempts to provide a reasonable service for a reasonable price, by downloading continuously pirate music, thereby hogging all the bandwidth, slowing everyone else, increasing the cost of the service and making capping necessary. :blah: Before I dive for cover, I will admit I have been satisfied with the service I have received from NTL for some years now, and I think the support staff terrific. :hugs: |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Quote:
Who told you it was late june? If it was NTL, then cancel your account. Because they have not delivered what you were promised. It just seems to me, might be wrong, but NTL are getting the money in first before coughing up. A bit like I have stated previous, you go into your supermarket and pick up a 4 pint carton of milk, getting to the checkout they tell you that will be £3. When you query the price they tell you "But in late summer it is going to be 6 pints". |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Quote:
The speed increases have never been due in late June, they will almost certainly be late August / early September. As for "the masses" - I'm pretty sure most ntl customers almost certainly do care about the installation charge and low cost startup deals - and only use it for a bit of general browsing and e-mail. Hence most are on the lowest tier. |
Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004

I sincerely apologise if I gave any offense. It was done "tongue in cheek". I think that smilie is cute and that they (smilies) help to make the forum more fun, which is the reason I use them. :dunce: As for the legendary "masses" - in refuting the blanket assumption of their requirements, I intended to give another point of view, not repeat the assumption of being their spokesperson. Installation costs and start-up deals will certainly be important to some although, as long as they are reasonable, the long-term costs concern me more. I would think, however, that those who have transferred from dial-up are interested in a little more than "a bit of general browsing and email". :) Whatever - chacun a son gout, and apologies where required. :Peaceman: Afterthought:- surely a smilie would not be included in the list if it's use was deemed unacceptable? |

NTL should offer alternatives ie. the current deal or reduced payment per month with a setup fee and customer buying own modem/router, so they cater for everyone and not just the low end user's.
A friend of mine rang up yesterday and a rep said leicester will be 1st August. |

The process of opening up BT's networks to other operators - known as local loop unbundling (LLU) It published proposals to open up BT's exchanges in May and at the same time BT announced that its charges for LLU would be dropped by 70%. |

Re: [Merged] NTL Increasing BB Speeds Late Summer 2004
Here in Bromley bb performance has never been an issue for me (since I changed to a SACM :) ) but in the last few weeks I've noticed reduced latency, with most of the ntl core network returning sub 10ms pings and my own servers coming in at around 14ms - So it looks like they've been spending some money :)
Keep up the good work! (lest hope it stays that way when we all get the increased speed) |

I think exact date's given by reps are probably true, its a bit different from people saying I heard. Belfast on 28 July and Leics on 1st August would make sense as they are close to each other so would suggest maybe ntl are doing upgrades from late july to early august and I doubt the whole thing would be done at the same time.

After the internet came back on, iv'e got better internet performance, downloads + uploads more stable, lower latency in counter-strike etc. Although my speed still reads 150k, NTL must be spending a lot of money around my area too :D |

I had the same, thought it was a fault, NTL CS didn't seem to know much about it though and arranged for an engineer to call. :s
