one thing i would point out though that in some instances you might suffer reliability problems with your internet or TV if you use a set top box, ie lock ups during full upstream use, problems with power levels etc...... ofcourse i have heard the new samsung set top boxes are alot more efficient with 2 cpu's so that one is for broadband the other for TV. just thought i would warn you as its only a potential problem. |

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
F**ks sake. I must be seriously unlucky or something. Once again I am told to wait for the automatic upgrade, and they won't upgrade it for me.
Out of interest, have people been upgraded here without getting the email from NTL saying their local branch has been upgraded? The support people have said both times now that I need to wait for that before the upgrades can happen. Although I can't believe where I am (like half an hour from London) hasn't been upgraded yet. Are NTL completely on an Indian call centre now BTW? Seems to be everytime I phone now. I don't know, everytime I phone NTL I end up annoyed as hell :( Since I have Sky as well, maybe it's easier to bugger off. 8Mbit ADSL sounds tempting (since I pay for a Bulldog ADSL account for my parents). Although I'm too lazy to lose my email address, plus I may be moving house soon. :( Cheers |

no problem, its just the things i have read on here about faults occouring, i dont mean to discourage you but i personally would want to have a set top box and cable modem, yes its an extra piece of plastic taking space but in the longterm your less likely to have problems.... sorry for the offtopic mods :) |
Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hmmm. Interesting point. A friend of mine, who is also on the £20 bought your own modem deal, just upgraded successfully on the online upgrade page. And he lives around the corner. And he didn't get a confirmation letter. So forget the original quote on this thread about being on different offers cocks it up. Plus I have a router and have unplugged it, reset everything, plugged directly into the PC etc, and it still gives the same error.
The only difference is that his original modem bust, so he had a new NTL modem installed. Whereas mine is the original Motorola Surfboard effort. Also, about a year ago or so, I phoned NTL with a query and the bloke reckoned I was not properly registered (and would lose my connection any minute - it didn't happen), even though I'd used broadband with NTL for years. So he went through the whole process of registering me etc. Perhaps he cocked it up? He didn't sound particularly clued up. He even said he had ADSL himself, as he preferred it. Not getting into Sales then eh? Any other reason why the online upgrade doesn't recognise me? (It gets pass the password etc, just fails and says "Error looking up cable modem details". Hmmm, and note that it then shows some details, but the labels for surname and postcode are interestingly blank. Can anyone help me? That virtual pint is turning into a virtual 4 pack of Guiness.... Failing that, does *anyone* have any idea of when NTL are going to officially automatically upgrade the speeds? I mean I don't know if CS knows or not, as they seem as slippery as politians (don't actually answer you). That or they don't actually understand you. The last one sounded less confident in English than our new local Chinese phone girl (and I'm Welsh, so I should know). Don't order the curry. You get something different. If she can understand your door number. Luckily I order from there quite a lot.... But surely approx dates are out by now, as it seems I have been relegated to Indian call centre hell. Bit annoying considering I used it from the beginning, and now I have friends upgrading to 2Mbit who have been with NTL for like 3 months. Grrr :( At least they pick up the phones quickly now (compared to 20 minute waits before). Cheers |

Bit of a Prat?
Evening all! :D
Right , I have a question .I`ve been a bit of a Prat! Before i knew about the speed upgrades on March the eighth, i changed my 1.5 mb bb down to the 300 kb service to cut costs etc. After i learned that the upgrades had taken place, i upgraded to the 750 kb service so i could get the 2 mb bb for the same price, since then i`ve tried upgrading the cm speed and all i get is a message telling me that due to the billing procedure, i have to wait until my next bill has been sent. Well, i got my bill today and tried to upgrade my bb service but it keeps giving me the same message about billing procedures.! I just wondered if one of you excellent helpful people could point me in the right direction and save me more time hanging on the phone listening to ****e `hold` music and being told every two minutes that my `call is important to us`:erm: :erm: :erm: Please help me!!!!!!!! Even 750 kbs seems like dialup after my old 1.5 mb speed!!!!!:dozey: |
Re: Bit of a Prat?
I would hazard a guess that it is because the billing system only *allows" two speed upgrades in a month so I reckon after 8th April you'll be able to change it ;)

Re: Bit of a Prat?
Thanks for that Marge!
Have a great weekend.:D |
Re: Bit of a Prat?
This may be a bit of a long shot but have you tried the online speed upgrade
I did mine from 300k to 1Mb and it was instant..... no hanging on phone lines etc  Here is the link If it wont work now you can try it on the 8th or whenever it is and you wont have to wait on the phone listening to that lovely hold music :erm: |
Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Aha. Had a hunch, and remembered that someone said here that broadband problems are the only ones that go through to the Indian call centre. So I chose general enquiries instead (option 5), and a nice scottish woman upgraded me straight away. Ok, so she upgraded me to 1mbit by accident, but phoning back got a nice scottish bloke who fixed it straight away. And I was answered in like 2 minutes! Great stuff from NTL (compared with a year or so ago), just rubbish stuff from NTL when it comes to their cheaparse Indian call centre. Honestly, British companies should be taxed to the hilt for effectively sending money out of the country (like when you try to bring in a purchase from abroad).
So, to sum up, don't worry about having a router plugged in; it makes no difference. If you get an error with the online upgrade then phone up, but make sure you do general enquiries. And you *will* lose any offers. The scottish woman told me I would lose my bought my own modem £20 a month special offer, even though it was a free upgrade. She then asked how long the offer was for and how long I had been on it. I said since the beginning (4 years?), and as far as I knew there wasn't any cut of date mentioned. She then amended my bill to be £25 a month, with a £5 discount. So I effectively kept the special price! Oh yes. Now to use up my cap on a couple of Java downloads :) Cheers |
Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Why is it harder to downgrade your service than it is to upgrade and why pay for 1.5 meg and get 3 meg and a limmit when you can pay for 1 meg and get 2 meg cheaper with the same download limmit or am i wrong ????

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Probably the same approach as the CS people I talked to. Basically is like watching politics shows on TV, where no-one gives a decent answer. Or much like when I tried to cancel my mobile phone contract. ie. major amounts of bullsh*t to just get what I wanted. ie. they don't want to lose any money. Hopefully with a sea of crap you will lose the will to live and hang up.
Cheers |

hi and :welcome: to the site , the reason for downgrading by phone , no idea sorry :erm: , the 1mb service is supposedly going to be capped at 3gb / month and is basically ae e-mail / browsing service , the 2mb is supposedly going to be capped at 30gb / month and the 3mb is supposedly going to be capped at 40gb / month , hope this helps you :) |
