As long as the implementation is simple and doesn't screw up something else then we can all get along using Tivo how we want to use i,t not how we're forced to use it - flexibility is key.

Isn't it just a case of invoking reminders on individual programmes, not that there is a need for an on-off option? "Off" is just a case of not selecting it for a programme you want a reminder for. Sure this was how V+ worked, didn't even know the feature was there until we wanted to use it one day.

Itshim 16-01-2012 14:38

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I just wish they would hurry up a bring reminders in. Along Full red button, these in my opinion are the two reasons why the V+ in our house has the edge.

I see that the Harry Potter and Twilight apps have been removed which now bring the number of apps down to 13. So much for the quote that there would be a hundred apps within a year.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I just had my TiVO installed today and the speed of navigating through the menu's and TV Guide on it's own is worth the replacement of my V+HD which kept freezing and was very sluggish.

However I'm not sure if this is because it needs to update overnight, but when I go into a catch-up programme and press OK to view it, the result just takes me back to the 'on demand' menu? Should I not be able to watch a catch-up programme from the TV Guide?

The HD channels on the TiVO are showing the same superb picture quality as the previous V+HD box but I'm not sure if there is a slight softening of the feed on SD channels compared to the V+ Could be just me, it's not too noticeable but some of text/lettering i.e. the BBC news banner appears a little less vibrant than before. I'm wondering if any of the settings need changing?

It can take 7 days for the box to fully settle in :)

Main feature this adds is Reminders Functionality:

Setting Reminders

You can now set the application to change the channel on your TiVo box at a specific time and date using the reminders
options.

Provided that the application is running on your PC at the time of the reminder, it will then change the channel
just like the V+ box did.

Andy

Brilliant, the reminders function is great, it returns the missing functionality from the old V+ boxes that I miss until VM can add it natively

Can you explain the reminders I can't find it on my box

I don't know if this has been asked before, but I'm not searching through 400+ pages to find out.

On my old Sky box you could just press the right button for a quick view of what was on next. There doesn't seem to be a function to do this on the TIVO, or am I missing something?

And don't forget this negative aspect of the update:

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...tc/td-p/979929

Doesn't affect me, because I don't use external devices to control Tivo, but it seems to be a very bad move on VM's part, as they haven't given a full explanation as to why and are thus annoying quite a few very vocal customers.

I believe it's a side affect of the stability update, rather than a deliberate attempt to block them.

.

If this is the case, then VM really should go on the forums to explain this.

The VM Tivo forums are a whingers hang out at the best of times; this has just added more fuel for them. Why don't VM take the time to explain that it is an unavoidable (?) side affect?

Hi I just wanted to confirm that we're piloting a small new code release for TiVo in a small number of areas at the moment.

In addition to a number of fixes after this software release a number of unsupported apps will cease to work as these apps create stability risks to our TV platform.

We know you're interested in using this sort of companion app so we're hard a work adding adding new features to our forthcoming TiVo Buddy app which we'll be launching later this year.

Thanks

How reliable are TiVo boxes? My relative is thinking of switching to the VIP50 package, and it says on the Virgin website it comes with a TiVo box.

Heard loads of horror stories, but then you always see the negative stuff and hardly anything about the good side of things. I am looking for a sort of pros and cons argument really for the TiVo box for my relative.

Thanks in advance.

After having TiVo for just over a month now (overall very delighted) I have noticed a couple of odd things in the last couple of weeks

1. Couple of times now when clicking on my shows there is a delay with a black screen, when it gets to my shows the current live TV channel window is now left blank. The only way to get this window back is to reboot the TiVo box, is this a known bug?

2. The other night I recorded a film in the early hours of the morning, it split it into 2 partial movies and created a folder for it in my shows, odd:confused:

Anyone that can answer these questions it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

1. press the SLOW button to toggle mini tv on/off

2. sounds like the recording interrrupted for some reason, like a reboot?

Have you got a clear line of sight from the remote to the TiVo box? I wonder if your remote is accidently sending the SLOW command to your box?

Hi DF

In relation to Q1 in my case the live tv window is replaced with just the TiVo red background not the recommendation banner, I will try the Slow button to rectify that issue hopefully in the future, seems to be a bug in my mind!

Q2 the actual film length should have been 1hr 30mins but the 2 partial recordingS totalled 6mins less:confused: does a reboot take that amount of time, I know allot is happening on a TiVo reboot!

The funny thing was the film was called The Broken:D

The interesting thing if it was a reboot is how the box reacted to a disrupted recording, would the V+ continued recording afterwards?

dwarfofpoison 28-01-2012 15:12

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Your box definately sounds like it rebooted and the slow button (turns it on or off) seems like the resolution for the preview window. However the interupted recording is where the TiVo excells (sounds strange) but it should pick a repeat of "The Broken" in the days to come.

I've had my TiVO for a week now and the only niggles are BBC Iplayer when the viewing interupts itself i.e. the spinning disc it doesn't resume from the last point you were watching. It restarts from the beginning. Some of the catchup programmes don't work, viewing them just takes me back to the On Demand menu. Other than that it's a million times more responsive that the V+ so I'll never go back to that now.

That's the first thing I thought as well. Basically the biggest feature in this patch is removing app support so VM are clutching at straws in order to make this look positive.

I wonder if it is one of the 'quality' apps that Virgin only want on Tivo?

Sums up the state of the apps on Tivo ATM!

OK, a little unkind, maybe?

I haven't looked at it yet, but have no doubt it will be nothing more than a few trailers for the show, along the lines of the true blood app. I'm a fan of the show (Walking Dead, not True Blood), and even I can't work out who fx think these apps will appeal to.

I think TiVo is in need of some "killer" Apps now.

Hi
Just had TIVO installed and can only get sound through SCART connection. Have older HD TV which has DVI connection. Bought 3.5 to Optical connection but still no sound, tried changing Audio from Dolby to PCM on TIVO. Kinda out of ideas and would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

'3.5 to Optical connection' will still be optical I reckon as it would need a lot of conversion from optical to 3.5 analogue which a cable itself wouldn't do

Most people who have a DVI only telly use a SCART to RCA/3.5 connection for audio

Thanks Ben. Guess the installer didn't give great advise. Any ideas what I would require?

Is that standard for everyone leaving VM?

Best of luck, DF. :) You've been (in my opinion anyway) an great asset to VM and they are nuts to let people like you leave.

NickO has posted an answer to set reminders on TiVo by stating they will be included in the next phase code release. http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...1045281/page/2

Credit where due, plenty of customers want this, not critical for me but for those who want it, I am sure they will be pleased and makes it easier for eventual migration of all customers to Tivo.
