Bit of a moan here, although it had a happy ending..

I've been trying to upgrade Microsoft's Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit on my machine, as one of my responsibilities at work is maintaining one of our Windows Deployments, and this toolkit contains the utilities used for that.

My moan is this. It requires that you uninstall the old version before upgrading, or even downloading, the new one. You have to uninstall the old version because when you download the new version, the download you get is a utility that is used to download and install the new version. It won't even run if you have ANY version of the ADK installed.

Bit annoying, but the uninstall for the old version was failing when it tried to uninstall one of the tools, and reversing the uninstall when it failed.

looking at the error code, it apparently means there was a permission problem meaning the installer didn't have access to something it needed to change. Unfortunately, the logs I had available just said the error occured. They didn't have any details of what the installer was trying to access.

Then, today, I ran the uninstall, with slightly changed logging options. It ran fine.

The plus side is I now have an up to date version of the software on my machine. The downside is because Microsoft decided to write an uninstaller that told me there was problem with the uninstall without telling where that problem was, I've spent ages trying to fix a problem that should have taken a few minutes.

Getting fed up with the InHealth Endoscopy service, who seem unable to find notes my GP practice has sent them on two separate occasions.

All I get is e-mails requesting the information again. That I am due for this unpleasant procedure in March makes this a concern.

Damn slow incompetent solictors. It has now been a month since I moved out of the house and into a hotel. It's a nice room don't get me wrong. But it isn't home. I am so sick of it. Turns out the contract only got signed on the other side yesterday.

Sorry to hear that.

Puts my moan into perspective and that is online council planning meetings - been going on for 7 hours so far just had comfort break number 3!! The only plus is it's online and I'm not sitting in a stuffy committee room in the Civic Hall.

My sister just phoned: The washing machine has flooded her kitchen. From her description of the fact that the water stopped when she turned it off sounds like the pipe from the water inlet valve to the drum or soap dispenser has split/come off. Because the programmer is waiting for the signal that the drum is filled it just keeps the water going.

Unfortunately she's over 30 miles away so with lockdown I can't really go and take a look so she's going to get a plumber in on Monday to see what he can do.

Going to have to get some reading glasses.
I saw a headline in the paper 'Hitler found alive in the Italian Alps'. Thought this was very surprising but it wasn't a tabloid. I was just trying to work out what age he must be when I squinted a bit.more and the true headline was revealed.....

I don't mind sites like that as long as the ads are not obtrusive. After all, even if they give you information for free, they still have to pay bills. They pay for hosting, hardware, software and sometimes pay costs to obtain the information.

This site, for instance, is funded by the advertisements. Otherwise, you'd be asking the Admin and Moderation team to pay for hosting so you could post.

My moan?

My ipad battery has failed. I am angry because I purchased this refurbished iPad from the same repair company (who are quite a large, reliable company who we use at work for our Apple repairs) last May after the battery in my original iPad failed, and the motherboard developed a fault that prevented it booting reliably.

They say the battery is fine, but one of the enclosures is bent. This is what I am angry about. I've treated the iPad extremely carefully, keeping it in a hardened case. In fact, the only time I removed it from that case was so I could send it back to the repairer. I'd argue that if anything is bent, it's happened either in their office, or in their courier's van. They are offering to sell me another refurbished iPad for half the price of a new one, but bearing in mind that the refurbished iPad comes with a 3 month warranty, and a new one will have both a better spec, and a 12 month warranty for £200 or so more (assuming they offer the full £215 for recycling my old iPad), I'm tempted to go for new.

BTW, before you suggest a cheap Android tablet, we already have a kindle in the house and, TBH, I don't like it. Plus I have too many iPad apps I am unwilling to give up.

Being deaf I rely on the subtitles to follow a program.
Why do the broadcaster stop the subtitle display frequently (in a live program) then when subtitles restart there is then a mad scramble to catch up with the spoken dialogue.

Because its live there is someone sat typing them out as you see the program. So they can't always keep up with what's being said. Especially if it's unscripted.

Car Insurance

We are a 3 car family. Due to 'circumstances' over the previous year, Wife & Daughter (both work for the same organisation) have been working from home . . and rumours are this could continue for at least one of them.

Thoughts were we sell Daughters car and add her as a named driver onto the wifes insurance . . . . . and that's where it ended

Daughter is 21, 3 years no claims, her own insurance this year would be around £380

If she sells her car and is added as a named driver to either of our insurance policies . . . it's roughly an extra £2100 a year

Looks like we will remain a 3 car family then  :dozey:

We were in the same position a few years back when I no longer needed my own car on a daily basis. We decided to sell our son's car and he would then have the use of my newer lower mileage car as a named driver. His insurance would have skyrocketed.

Luckily someone suggested that we considered transferring ownership of my car to him then he transferred his insurance to his "new" car adding me as the named driver. A bit of a faff but the new quote with my being on his policy actually reduced his premium. If it's any help we did this with DirectLine. Maybe worth getting a quote and seeing if it still works.

They seem to think you're more stable if you have a partner long term enough to potentially let them drive your car regularly. I kept my ex wife on mine for years.

At one time we had a multi-car policy with an insurer and when renewal came in with a big hike in price we looked around and found it cheaper to have separated policies with same insurer same details/dates etc than the multi-car.

That poxy "Internet Matters" advert.

They seem to allow their kids unlimited phone or tablet time.

Then there is the mention of the kids finding the passwords easily.

When my sister bought her daughter a mobile she immediately set ground rules, failure to comply meant no phone.

I don't have kids, but I know how to keep them internet safe.

I have heard that people get less bad reaction on the first jab with Pfizer and more con the second which is the opposite to the AZ jab.

For work - if people call me on my soft phone (preferred on directory) then I can use headset and it works nicely, especially when they want we to do something while they are on line. If they call mobile then I may need to use speaker so I can use my hands. (I do have headset for phone but it's not ready as they should call softphone and use mobile for on-call/out of office.)

Sorry! Moda Furnishings based in Manchester. Spent just short of £5.5K on garden furniture - it turns out the cushion covers aren't UV proof . Had promise after promise regarding replacements (the last one in October saying we'd have them 'by spring'). According to their website, new orders in our colour combination apparently have an 11 to 14 week lead time so doubt we'll see new cushion covers anytime soon.

Add to that the three attempts they needed to deliver furniture not bent out of shape or a different shade of weave AND the problem with the incorrect corner cushions they just seem to be ignoring.

Apparently there's a 7 year warranty but I'm getting the feeling anyone claiming will have a laugh a minute trying to get something sorted. They have a pretty good score on Trustpilot but a good read has quite a few customer claims of Moda only offering to sort out issues for customers if they remove the bad reviews.

Emailed them again last night asking them to sort the issues in a timely manner or we'll be expecting them to collect the stuff and refund the money. Mrs G has an 'in for a penny, in for a pound' attitude and will happily throw a bit more money at a claim in the small claims court.

Any company dealing with customer ratings that willingly removes bad reviews isn't really worthy of trust IMO.

My reason for disliking the place was for many years I had to go regularly for meetings and normally felt quite travel sick after being thrown about on a lovely pacer train. For some reason the journey back was never that bad (maybe it was the few beers before we set off back??). Feeling quite queasy thinking about it!!!

I can hear the person on the phone louder that the person holding it, mid you wearing a mask you can get away with calling them a bell end and turn of the poxy speaker

Went to Doctors surgery yesterday for blood pressure checks (high) with the nurse.

When I left the nurse I approached the reception to make an appointment to see a doctor (unrelated issue) . . . easy you'd think eh, seeing as I'm already there.

Oh no, not on your bloody life.

"Due to Covid, we try to keep the reception and waiting room (empty at the time) as clear as possible to reduce the risks of infection. You have to ring at 8am and we can then take the details and pass them on to a Doctor"

I don't understand for the life of me why my blood pressure is high

Stress? :D :D :D

I went for an annual Blood Pressure check on Tuesday at my new practice. Always been fun watching the reaction when my White Coat Syndrome kicks off. Turned out, due to social distancing and covid + safety measures, I had to do it myself using an arm cuff and the extra stress gave me stratospheric readings, after 3 attempts I managed to bring the figure down to 135 /90.

Back again tomorrow to see the Dr just hope he reads my notes before I get there and takes into account my daily readings done at home with my calibrated BP monitor.

I had to phone my doctor's surgery at 8am, I phoned at 8am exactly, the message said closed, phoned straight back still closed, again phoned back 8th in the queue, only to hear the dire hold music that will turn a sane man homicidal

I have about 8 that I got from work. I used one and kept it with my mug and would take home with the mug to was, and forgot Monday morning to take back.

Mine is BBC programs that use Kilometres, when in the UK we use miles.

Then there is changing how the word is said eg "NAZI" should be Narts Ze, NOT Gnat Zee

He can just about carry stuff upstairs but can't carry any of it down. His laundry comes down the stairs like a howitzer shell...

SKY.

They sent me a new router at the end of March as part of the new contract. As requested I returned the old one in the packaging supplied at the start of April. Have had a couple of emails reminding me to send the old kit back but also telling me to ignore if have already return the kit. This morning I got an email to say they've added a £50 charge to our account for failing to return the router.

Nearly an hour on the phone trying to sort, including clearing security with the automated answering system then having to do it again with each of the 3 different people I spoke to. Apparently they can't sort out the charge before Thursday as that would mean they'd end up reducing our May bill by £50 when the charge has gone on the June bill. It's frustrating as it took 4 calls in March to get them to bill the account at the agreed price, and similar fun and games 18 months before. Every one of the 3 people this morning tried to tell me the system automatically adds the charges to the account. Despite me trying to explain, none of them seemed to be able to grasp that computers only do what a person has told them to do and that the system wouldn't have decided to bill me £50 for a laugh!

This is a good thing. The sooner we can get people to use metric more generally the better. I know my weight (mass for pedants) in kilogrammes, height in centimetres. I know portions in grammes, volumes in litres.
It will be tricky to change miles to kilometres as lot's of road signs but not impossible. (Though one downside would be dropping speeds to nearest 5 or 10 km/h not raising them. 50mph easily -> 80km/h. 70mph is 112km/h so would become 110km/h not 115 or 120km/h, 60mph -> 96km/h so would become 95 or even 90km/h.)

No it's a bad thing in my opinion, roads will always be in MPH, and England will always have a slight mix of metric and Imperial it's not going to disappear.

Have two dogs ,much easier to clean than real grass .vac is easy just buy a vac that is designed for it ( check out Amazon) . Looks so real .but you get what you pay for. Fooled my window cleaner for around 6 month's only twigged when it was being vacumed . Even then he had to get his wife in because he thought l was mad , not really that far off the mark :D

No need to teach both, just help them use metric in everyday situations.

Pint in pub - only really if you get 568 ml fluid but mostly you could just have big beer, little beer at 500ml or 250ml with adjustment in price. You could call it pint or half if wanted.

MPH is easier to change than distance. You only know the speed because of what your instruments tell you (or experience) so again precise measurement isn't really a bother.

It's small changes like weight/height in metric, temperature in C (we seem to have an odd mix of C for low temps and F for high).

It's not odd, it's attention grabbing, hot temperature in Celsius doesn't sound hot like it dies in Fahrenheit likewise you know its cold in Celsius

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

The first part isn't a moan.

My sister hit the big 50 on Thursday and she, hubby and kids went out for the day, they came to ours on Friday, I cooked some chicken and other things.

A while late I turned the main oven on to cook some Churros, I shut the door and the power went out, I couldn't reset the fusebox, I came in and turned the oven on, then the fuse box, I turned the main oven back on and bam no power. So reset the lot, I was able to use the top oven.

Today I went to Curry's to buy an oven, but it was easier to find hens teeth, they had none in stock.

So I came home and ordered one (Zanussi ZCV66050BA) from AO, they wanted £80 to put in 2/3 wires so sod that, I have someone who can do it for a beer.

I paid £20 for them to take it away, but it has to be on the doorstep for them.

I had to pay £30 for a 7am to 7pm delivery on Monday., and will get a test 6:30 to 8:30am giving me a 4 hour delivery slot.

Probably a bit late now, but did you try replacing the heating element? They are the things that usually go and aren't that difficult and cheap to replace. The fact that one part of the oven works, and the other doesn't makes it a possibility.

I had an absolute nightmare with a cooker. had it delivered from Appliances Direct . Had to leave old cooker by door the same. Had a mate connect it and it tripped the electric. Tested the cooker and it registered a hard fault on the neutral. Had a night trying to get to talk to someone but eventually they sent someone out from blooming domestic and general

I told him what to test he refused and went all round the electrics and took the back off looked and then finally tested the for a fault and found the hard fault I already told him about. He said it was faulty and left a fault report. I got a new cooker and demanded they fit it free which they did. Then a week later I got a letter off D&G saying they found nothing wrong with the cooker and tried to charge me £65. I called and said what you trying to pull. I wonder how many get that letter see the charge and just pay it. Criminal

The rise in the cost of building materials. We got planning permission to extend the front and back of the house at the end of last year and already the price has gone up about £8k since the ballpark estimate last June.

Finding a builder is also good fun and when you do getting a provisional start date of less than 18 months in the future is a skill I'm yet to master. None of the builders we've spoken to are willing to commit to a price for work towards the end of next year as they've no idea where the material costs will be!

Think we're just going to wait and see what happens and reapply for planning permission if we need to - which will give the chap next door another chance to object because we're thinking of adding a rooftop patio at the back too.

Travis Perkins has announced price rises from 1st June.

5% on paint
10% on timber
15% on cement

I have been waiting for stocks of treated CLS for months. 3 places have been unable to get any at all, and those that could said they won't pay the inflated prices as they might get stuck with it.

B&Q just increased their prices almost weekly.

Try Settings -> Display if you want to change your font size or display size. My phone uses non-standard android and I'm still on version 10 so yours could be different.

I also seem to remember using Settings -> Accessibility on one of my android phones.

I’d love to know why cyclists should pay a tax that hasn’t existed since the late 1930’s

Perhaps you mean they should pay VED? Which would be interesting as it’s engine size/emissions based…. Also VED goes straight to the general treasury and isn’t used directly toward the maintenance/upkeep of highways
