:) it's for my latest guitar build project which also involves a big, old slab of elm I've procured (which is apparently not too easy to work with).

Ah, I had visions of a DIY transplant. :D

John does a lot of wood carving and informs me that Elm, when kiln dried is about as easy to carve as a lump of concrete and that dealing with its uneven grain and tendency to split is a pain but it ends up with a very intricate grain pattern and is well worth the effort.

He also hopes that the Elm you procured has been well dried because when green it stinks like an outside privvy as you try to work on it. :D

Thanks Jo, it's been lying around in a workshop for several years so it is well dried out. The grain is split at the ends but it's a pretty big slab so there should be more than enough useful wood for one or maybe two bodies. It must have been a piece of furniture at some point, looks like it may have been some kind of worktop or bench. It is a nice grain as your John says so definitely a contender for natural finish :)

@LR: the dining room furniture here is Yew, don't give me any ideas ;)

no arguments here :)

My happy thought is being able to buy myself a new camera - just because I could - although, so far I haven't tested the 'wink detector', it is mainly doing what it said on the tin :)
