In what way does it fit a thread about a 2->10Mbit upgrade.

Not saying it doesn't just can't grasp the connection myself?

Did it really matter where I put this for you to gripe about it?

For goodness sake I was only trying to help, but I will tell you this, it's people like you that will stop me from doing so in the future.

You happy now.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Can I offer an observation which I have noticed today which may, or may not, help those that are not seeing full speeds on test. I have both IE6 and Firefox 3.0..10. on my PC. Using speedtest.net I am constantly showing results of 5-6mb in IE6. Using Firefox I am always getting more than 9.5mb, and sometime going over 10.
I do not pretend to understand if there is a valid reason for these results, maybe there is a difference in the way the browsers work? Perhaps one of the more technical members may be able to explain.
Perhaps something else to try for those that think they are not getting the speeds they should?

Got my new Ambit 256 today and rang to get it activated. However when i loaded Firefox i got a page saying click here to activate your services. Clicking this just puts you in cage and nothing happens. Rang again and was told it is a bug so closed it and the operator closed the notice on my account. Bingo it works a treat now and getting a proper speed.

Click on the Connection button in the header of this page and see what your Host address is. Although you live in a certain postal address it does not necessarily follow that this is the area that will show up in the upgrade list.

For example, mine is cpc2 stre 4 -0 -0 cust XXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com

The stre stands for Stretford and that is the area that will show in the list rather than Urmston where I actually live.

If the abbreviation isn't clear to you, post your host address and another member will be sure to be able to tell you what it represents but XXX out your customer number.

------------------------------------

Aha - mine is "Lewi" - so Lewisham - and due for "July / August"...

Modem wise its the black ntl 250 - so going by the above posts I should be OK

Thanks again

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

To be honest I think the best method of getting a truthful result on the download speed is to download the blueyonder game files, downloading 2 different files at the same time is preferred then just double the transfer speed and that total will be the current download speed.

As for the browsers, have noticed that when I use I.E6 with no proxy I get my normal M package speed, when using Firefox with no proxy I get slightly less speed.

Internet speed is the subject for debate on Sky news just now, I was slightly confused as to why it wasn't reported that using a proxy can often effect the speeds, and I can vouch for that after doing various tests with or without proxy.

Hey guys,

I'd like to ask a question hopefully someone here may be able to answer- I apologise if it's already been asked but searching through sixty odd pages of discussion isn't my ideal way of spending an afternoon! XD

I live in Grimsby, UK, and apparently my Internet has also been upgraded to 10MB. I received many emails from Virgin touting their new fantastic speeds, downloading songs in 5 seconds, videos in 25 seconds etc. I haven't noticed any difference in speed however, and can tell my Internet is not 10MB as whenever I attempt to connect to the Internet via my PS3 or Xbox Live I'm suddenly timing out on my computer.

I thought it could be my Modem box, as I still have an old gray NTL one with green lights on the front. Anyway, I decided to run a Speed Test and sure enough, my download speed was 2.8MB, nowhere near 10MB. I phoned Virgin up and they told me I was doing something wrong, and that I was defiantly on 10MB. The lady on the phone decided to run a speed test on my connection, quickly taking back what she said about me doing something wrong, telling me I was still on 2MB.

Apparently there's a 'fault' in the Grimsby area where no-body can access 10MB. They say they're 'fixing it', though I highly doubt they're in any rush. Does anyone here have any idea when we might be able to see 10MB speeds in the Grimsby area? It would be nice to have a 10MB connection after all the bloody emails they've sent me saying I have one and how out of this world it is. Thanks!

lightning89,

Can't see any issues in your area on the services section, that doesn't mean to say these isn't though, but something as wide spread as this for an area you would think would get a mention in the service fault section for East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire, have I got the right area there? lol

Hey VMboy, yeah you're looking at the right area! We're in North East Lincolnshire. I thought it was probably something wrong with our box- a good deal of people I know have had new boxes sent round by Virgin after the upgrade was put into play.

We on the other hand still have one of these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/N...Home310510.jpg (image from Google.)

I've no idea if it's effecting it, and the woman on the phone just told me it was a widespread 'fault.' She didn't really say what the fault was and how long it'd be until it was fixed, mind you. Sounded a bit to me like she was fobbing us off.

lightning89,

Yeah, it's a bit like the Ambit 256 only different colour and perhaps slightly larger.

I would have pushed (not literally) the advisor as to when your area looks likely to be receiving the speeds to which you are expecting.

Haha, she wasn't that bad, but there's a few telephone help service staff I've felt like pushing off numerous things before! I'll give it another week or so and if there's no difference I'll give them another call explaining that I phoned up before and was told they were fixing the issue. I'll get back to you when I have the response. Thanks!
