As mentioned, only Google Contacts & Google Calendar currently support "Push" on the iPhone.

For Google Mail, you still need to use IMAP using the iPhone's email app.

Hopefully Google will support Push email soon...

And now it does! :D

I already had my iPhone set up to use Google Sync for Contacts & Calendar, so all I had to do was remove the Gmail IMAP account, & enable "Mail" within the Google Sync account.

Bit slow at the moment, I guess due to the demand...

I've just set it up on mine :D - and I finally managed to get a 3G iPhone under the insurance I had (original 2G speakers went all crackly) so its a win-win now :D

I'm going over to amsterdam next weekend and it would be really useful to be able to use my iphone. Would I be right in thinking if free wifi is used, then i won't have to pay roaming charges?

If i do connect over 3g, then is there a bolt on i can get just to cover myself. I'm only going Friday to Monday, but its helpful to use the google maps app (the best steakhouse in Amsterdam is on the agenda for this visit ;))

Wi-Fi is indeed free still.... if the hotspots are "The Cloud" or open ones. I'm unsure about the roaming bolt-on but it wouldn't surprise me if one existed. I know the data charges without any bolt-ons are £2.94/MB on roaming so not exactly cheap.

Re: The iPhone thread

O2 Pay Monthly customers can choose from two "Data Abroad" bolt-ons:

http://www.o2.co.uk/explore/tariffs/...monthlyboltons

Quote:

# Data Abroad 10 - £19.58 per month for 10MB of data to use overseas
# Data Abroad 50 - £48.95 per month for 50MB of data to use overseas

Personally, I'd make sure that "Data Roaming" is OFF within the iPhone's settings (should be the default), and then just make use of any free WiFi hotspots you can find.

Those Data Abroad Bolt-ons seem rather pricey, & general roaming data charges are also £££££.

Deactivate your voicemail while you're there too - if someone gets through to it and doesn't actually leave a message, you'll get charged three times just to hear them mutter "I hate talking to bloody machines...".

Thanks Matt, I opted for the Data Abroad 10 to be on the safe side, we want to be able to use Google maps to get around which require GPS anyway so even in wifi areas I'd still get caught out (unless i used google map website oops:).

You shouldn't be charged that much for GPS. The iPhone (by default) uses assisted GPS to get faster lock ons. This requires that a little data is sent to a data centre, and a little data is received. If you turn off the Assistance (although I have no idea if you can do that on the iPhone), you won't be charged anything, but the GPS will take several minutes to lock on.

I'd be *very* careful though with your usage.

10MB is not very much at all, especially as Google Maps downloads the map data on the go.

Can't be turned off. There's only an overall on/off toggle for GPS as a whole.

As Google Maps downloads map data on the go, & can't be pre-loaded with maps (unless using a Jailbroken iPhone), even if you could turn off the Assistance side of it, the Map app will still be using a lot of data.

Not a problem with a free WiFi connection though of course... so long as it's not one which only works when logged in via a browser.

EDIT:

I guess you could effectively turn off the Assistance side of the GPS when abroad by turning off data roaming, as the iPhone then could not connect at all via GPRS/EDGE/3G.

But, although the GPS itself would still work, you'd need something to actually use it with, & the Google Maps app requires a data connection to download the map data.

Does Google Maps not store a cache of data on the device?
