"Yelp" for the iPhone uses the GPS to give info on nearby bars, restaurants, etc., along with reviews & stuff.

The latest version also has a hidden augmented reality (AR) feature, for the 3GS only...

I'm glad to say it works, but only on iPhone 3GS. Here's how to activate it (again, note that a 3GS iPhone is required):

I've just installed it, & activated the AR "Monocle". Not tried it yet though.

Spotify is now available to download

The Spotify Application is quite good, shame it can't run in the background though. I hope Apple lift that limitation.

£10 a month is too expensive, especially when there's Dizzler for free. Available on the iPhone and the Android.

For people willing to jailbreak their phones, you can run Backgrounder to force apps to run in the background.

By the way Apple will never lift the ban on background apps.

The best you can hope for is that they develop the iPod application to aggregate online music services.

The apparent reasoning behind Apple banning bg apps is security. It prevents spyware etc running on the iphone without you knowing about it i suppose. But there could be something like the location services where it asks if you want to allow it to run in the background.

I think it's more for battery life, the more apps running the more processing they need and your battery will deplete. The iPhone is already poor for battery life any worse and it might become unusable.

I always thought it was more due to "YOU MUST OBEY APPLE!" ;)

They allow their own apps (iPod, Phone, Email, Messages, Safari) to run in the background...

Yes but that's a handful, no more than any other phone really. Imagine 10/15 applications running in the background. Apple have the policy of not trusting their users not to do stupid things and therefore prevent applications from running in the background at all.

Has anyone else tried adding GMAIL to their iPhones as the Exchange email type?

I've run through this Apple help topic and I just can't make it work:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile...&answer=138740

Once complete, and after the iPhone says my gmail account has been verified on my iPhone using the Exchange option...when I open up mail...there is no email, and it prompts for my password. same for contact...nothing there just prompts for my password.

I typed in my password 10 times, it's def right... I have no issues adding gmail to my iphone using the Gmail email option, accepts my password!

But I want to see if gmail is PUSHED to my phone using the Exchange option, as per link.

Any ideas, have you tried it and it worked ok for you or not?

From the link you provided, near the top:

Note: Mail sync is not yet supported. You may receive error messages if you attempt to turn on Sync for Mail.
Suggests to me that it won't work.....

---------- Post added at 18:46 ---------- Previous post was at 18:45 ----------

The 'Exchange' sync is for calendar and contacts only, and that part of the functionality works just fine.
