Interesting. Do you think you need to use the pass there and then to watch the golf? The T&C's say:

"Available to new and existing NOW TV customers without a Sky Sports Pass. Viewing period ends 24 consecutive hours after you start watching. Requires Broadband/3G/4G/Wi-Fi (charges may apply) and compatible device. NOW TV account set up with credit/debit card (no charge will be taken) required for new customers. You can only have one Sky Sports Pass in your account at any one time. See nowtv.com for device compatibility and further terms. Offer ends 14th July at 23:59."

From previous experience once a pass had been added to your account it stays valid for 12 months and only starts when you start watching one of the SKY Sports channels. I wonder if you can add this and use it at a later date?

Just a wee update on the NOW TV freebie.

NOW TV are giving away a free 24 hours Sports pass today here:

http://www.nowtv.com/promo/free-pass

The offer is only available until midnight tonight. Whilst it's been advertised as a chance to watch the first day of The Open for free, if you claim the pass it gets added to your NOW TV account and can be activated when you like. When I applied the code to my NOW TV account it stated:

"You've got 24 hours of sports action waiting. Activate your pass whenever you're ready."

If you've not got SKY Sports it's worth grabbing and keeping for a time when you'd really like to use it.

You may well be right; I am not sure. You can't pause live Now TV channels on the current box (just tried it) but you can obviously pause catchup shows. Personally, I never watch live Now TV channels because it is SD. Waiting for the 720p catchup version is far better IMHO, given that also, there are no adds.

Freeview live channels are delivered OTA and Now TV live channels are delivered via streaming.

I guess we'll have to wait until someone gets a new box.

afternoon gents

anyone gone the now tv route for sports ?

vm have disappointed me in our latest negotiations so i'm looking at my options, one of which is cancelling sky sports

i've had a look at the listings and, honestly, there isnt too much i'd miss, certainly over the next couple of months

i'm thinking of a week pass for the ryder cup and the odd day pass for the odd match i wouldn't want to miss

how is the reliability these days, do you have trouble if its oversubscribed or anything like that ? i'd likely be watching through the native app on my PS4 with a wired internet connection so that shouldn't be an issue

any thoughts gratefully received

If you are interested only in certain types of sport or only specific events, the Now TV option may well be the one for you, and your bank balance may be considerably healthier as a result.

I have absolutely no issues accessing Now TV via my Roku streaming stick but cannot vouch for other methods of access. Of course you need to factor in the fact that you won't get HD picture quality with Now TV.

muppetman11 29-07-2016 13:06

Yes, I'm busy setting up alternatives to VM for when my contract ends. Hasn't cost me a penny yet and have already had two weeks free sky cinema (live channels and on demand) and got some free 24 hour sports passes, has a months free entertainment included too. Sky sports is 720p on your PS4. Not had any of the stuttering or random errors or other problems I'm used to with Virgin On Demand.

I think it's a combo of both.

It was announced at a board meeting earlier in the year that Sky would drop certain rights as they focus on core markets. Many guessed that it would mean dropping of US Open tennis amongst other things. As they carry Eurosport they know that subscribers will still get access to it. Had Eurosport not held rights and it been an open tender with BT bidding then it might have been a different story.

Plus with the new ownership Eurosport are uping their game and investing in rights and their coverage. I think they are pretty keen to be the home of the Grand Slam tennis. Will be interesting to see if they bid for the ATP rights when they are up, looks like they didn't go for the WTA ones.

I think BT is going to have to accept that it has breached its contract with VM and maybe this will result in an agreement that benefits Virgin customers who get the XL pack. Let's hope so.

It's about time football fans got some financial relief!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/...-ee-gives-cha/

A bitter row has erupted between BT and Virgin Media over the more than £120m a year the cable operator pays its broadband rival for the BT Sport channels now being offered free to millions of EE mobile subscribers.

BT is seeking to capitalise on its £12.5bn takeover of Britain’s biggest mobile operator by boosting distribution of its football rights. EE’s monthly subscribers have been given six months of free access to BT Sport via a mobile app, in a move that it hopes will increase loyalty and television revenue once charges are introduced next year.

The promotion has enraged Virgin Media, however, which played a key role in the launch of BT’s football push three years ago and has a wholesale agreement to provide BT Sport to millions of cable households as part of their television package. Virgin Media agreed to pay upfront to carry BT Sport, which helped the channels justify their heavy spending on sports rights to investors.

For the cable operator, the arrangement was seen as an advantage over Sky in the pay-TV market. BT has not done a wholesale deal with its biggest rival, leaving satellite households to face a separate subscription at higher cost if they want both Sky Sports and BT Sport.

Virgin Media, owned by New York-listed Liberty Global, is understood to have claimed that EE’s offer represents a breach of its contract, which bars BT from giving wholesale access to BT Sport at a lower price than it pays.

Virgin Media argues the arrangement with EE effectively represents a wholesale deal at zero cost and has demanded that the mobile operator suspend the promotion.

BT has so far refused, and EE is advertising the deal heavily with a campaign fronted by the actor Kevin Bacon and BT Sport pundits such as Rio Ferdinand. It sees the chance to bundle BT Sport with smartphone contracts as an important part of the rationale for its return to the mobile market.

A source described Virgin Media as “absolutely furious” over the dispute, which illustrates wider concern in the telecoms and media sector over BT’s increased power following the takeover of EE. Virgin Media directly competes with EE via its Virgin Mobile service, which has three million customers. The cable operator does not own a mobile network infrastructure, instead renting capacity from EE.

Since the BT takeover, it has become keen to shift its business and is understood to have held talks with Three.

BT said it did not comment on customer contracts, and Virgin Media declined to comment.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Be interesting to see how that plays out OB as I'm not sure EE would need a wholesale agreement as they are now owned by BT. I'm not a legal expert so one to keep an eye on.

Although I think VM would be better off focussing their time and money on improving their own offering to customers to try and keep them now they've just announced another price increase.

The EE deal is only available on mobile/tablet devices that contain an EE sim the cast feature is also disabled so I'd imagine BT has covered all bases before launching it.

I was wondering why Eurosport was available on EE TV but not BT Sport. That explains why.

There's now a promo for Sky Sports Mix in the Discovery Bar confirming that it starts on Wednesday.

I guess the launch of this channel sees the end of temporary free periods on the main Sky Sports channels.

That deal with EE by BT Sports, is probably the reason why we had THREE increases in subs, just to pay the 140 million quid.

Its a disgusting amount of money. I can see when the next set of talks about sports. I can honestly see BT outbidding everyone.

At the end of the day, each broadcaster should have an equal share of sports. I do know that FiFA and Eufa are not happy, as viewing figures are down.
bodies feel that everyone should see

I don't think BT sport will out bid it will be interesting but it's got to reach a limit at some point there paying 10 million a game at the moment. BT might get more games as sky might feel they can drop a package. Also next bidding its for 190 games a extra 22 games which is another package so could see 3 games on a sunday from the 2019-20 season

its 120Million which when you look at how much BT spend on sports per year its a bargin. just on the two biggest contracts BT have to pay 619m per year.

BT Premier League £960m 3 Years = 320M Per Year
Champions League £897m 3 Years = 299M Per Year

Rumours are Sky Sports take up on Virgin Media is only around 20% though this was before the new relationship (been a few years now) that is pushing movies and sports to virgin customers on sky channels plus having access to their apps etc.
Virgin media 3.7m TV Subs = 740,000 take sky sports

I doubt even half of them would sub BT Sport at around 20 pounds per month but having it free makes you stay.
Sky Customers that don't have BT Broadband pay 21.99 for SD & 26.99 for HD. If you hate sport it looks bad but for me it's the only thing making me stay with virgin media currently otherwise i would move to sky for a faster box SKY Q as tivo is just crap and 4K.

Virgin are upset at the EE deal but this is a sign BT need more subs especially as UEFA are not happy with viewing figures of champions league. Most will do the 6 months free and cancel anyway.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Interesting that VM offered/agreed to pay their carriage fees upfront; cable companies usually pay them monthly just like us!

Maybe this was the deal breaker that brought us the channel at the last minute?

The carriage costs for BT Sport are currently £120m and VM is said to have approx 1.8M XL pack subscribers.

TMLeafs has been doing some interesting number crunching in another thread:

BT sport pay close to 1 Billion pounds per year for all their sport. That fixed money from virgin per year definitely helps them out otherwise all other ways of subbing BT sport will increase in cost.

To get it on sky without BT Broadband it's already £21.99 SD £26.99 HD when it started it was around 15 pounds.

If XL lost BT sport and lets say they start charging 20 pounds per month they would need at least 500,000 subs to get the same amount of money. With Sky Sports take up is low on virgin media, though it has been along time since we have seen any figures it's definitely the best option for BT.

So, the 'free' BT Sport channels actually costs us XL subscribers about £5.56 per month...

Sadly, we all know by now that free=inclusive or you could just get BT Sport free without anything else! And in any other deal where a company says something is free but you have to buy something else first, just substitute "free" for "inclusive" to get the honest situation.

To be fair Virgin have never said BT Sport was free just "included in your package at no extra cost". We're all paying for it (those on the xl package anyway).

But virgin will clearly have every customer paying the bill

All TV Subs
120M/3.7M/12 =£2.71

All Customers
120M/5.2M/12 = £1.92

Only Triple-Play Customers (64.1%)
120M/3.33M/12 = £3

To most people that translates as free.

TBH I am getting rid OF VM and switching everything to Sky with a much better offer, however I will be gutted at losing BT sport. I certainly do NOT plan on forking out £26.99 a month for it on Sky.

VM definitely got a good deal for it what ever people seem to think the price rises are actually for.

Its a total joke that BT charge so much for it now.

Yes I can see that many people see that as 'free'.
Thought about going back to sky myself but my other half wants to stay with virgin and like you would miss by sport but wouldn't pay the asking price by want.

Coz they don't want you too. they want you to completely move to BT or at least the broadband. It's why sky are doing the 10 pounds fibre for life it stops that as sky Internet plus BT sport will equal the same amount to move to BT broadband to get it free but that won't even get it on your sky box there's another fee for that last time I looked it was 6 pounds without HD

I don't know a single sky customer that has BT sport they always have a mates or nans login to stream online

Stephen, if you have gone to Sky, from VM. BUT IF you keep the M pack, you can get BT Sport for £20.00 on Sky. and you get ALL the BT channels plus Showcase

We called Sky, as we were frustrated by the increased costs of VM. They gave us a deal, and we agreed it. And ITS CHEAPER than VM. for everything.

My wife kept the M pack and BB/TV on VM, as we don't have a problem on the phone. But l was fed up with the price increases. BT Sport is NOT free, we had THREE price increases.

Its a better deal - and VM couldn't beat it. And here is a good one. EPL IS BEING SHOWN LIVE ON bt sPORT on showcase

I find that hard to believe, live English Premier League matches being shown on the free channel.

I think there are meant to be half a handful, yes. And strictly speaking it's not free (unlike part-time channel BT Sport Showcase) just included with the Sky entertainment channels.

It makes BT's constant moaning about Sky not wholesaling all its channels to them even more hypocritical in my opinion.

On XL TV BT Sport is 'included' so no cost equals free IMO. Price rise or not.

Because of problems we were having with vm. We checked out sky. They gave us a deàl for 12 months.

So we down graded vm to med pack. Kept bb and phone.
We asked about bt sport. And we have it as a stand alone channel at 20 quid per month.

BT are charging Nearly 30 per month - which is disgusting

Last year vm put the prices up Three times last year
So to me BT Sport isnt free. There was no new channels. So when l spoke to a sales rep in hounslow and he said that there no new channels coming up. And didnt know there was a tivo box coming out.
When we said we were considering leaving vm. He did not even ooffer us anything

So we just have vm med pack. Bb. And phone. And stand alone BT Sport - simples

So according to the above highlighted in bold, that would suggest that you have both VM and Sky? If this is the case isn't your total combined bill pretty high?
