He had to chase home the resurgent Kauto Star at Haydock and in the King George at Kempton and while he won the Aon Chase at Newbury, he was only third when defending his Cheltenham crown.

The nine-year-old was a triple Grade One winner and had looked back to his best this season following a long absence.

Meade said: "We're all in a state of shock at the moment. He was just doing a very steady canter. I was stood about 100 yards away from him and all of a sudden I heard this almighty crack and he'd somehow broken his leg above the hock."

Very saddened to hear this news.

Henderson said: "Two and a half miles is blatantly his optimum trip. He was out on his feet after Cheltenham - he was very wobbly after the race - but to beat Thousand Stars by a neck at Aintree was fantastic."

KAUTO HONOURED AT HAYDOCK

John Gosden's filly has enjoyed an excellent three-year-old campaign, with victories in the Musidora and Nassau Stakes supplemented by fine places efforts in the Oaks at Epsom, the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Yorkshire Oaks and most recently the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Connections had been looking forward to seeing the Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber owned filly sign off for the year in the Far East on December 9, but she will now be saved for next season.
