Well, I gave in & Jailbroke my iPhone 3GS this evening, running OS 3.0.1.

Very easy.

Not tried Cydia yet - still getting it all back how I like it.

Cydia is great! So much cool stuff you can do on there - for example - theres an APP by where you can change the provider text - from 02 to what ever you like - mine says "rich" at the moment.

Yeah, it's very good! :)

So far I have installed...

Winterboard & Bosspaper (theme & wallpaper apps)

Five Icon Dock (gives you, unsurprisingly, a five icon dock)

SBSettings (handy little app which slides from the top when you swipe the status bar, giving on/off toggles for WiFi, 3G, etc., plus gives memory stats, process/task manager, shortcuts, ability to hide apps you don't ever use, etc.)

RedLaser (barcode scanner, which then IDs the barcode & searches Amazon & other sites for price comparisons).

You should try GBA4iPhone - it's lush! Pokemon yellow / red etc - tis great!

Doom, is pretty sweet! SBS is lush and required for most cydia apps..

MM

Did you ever get this fixed?

I have what I think is a couple of small specks under my screen. I thought they were on the screen (it is, after all, a horrendous dust magnet), but after much furious wiping they were still there so I think they're under it.

They're only really noticeable though in bright & direct light, and at just the right angle, so I can't really be bothered to take it back to Apple (not just for two specks!).

If it gets any more though, I probably will try & get Apple to swap it.

Sorry, its a small gripe.. but I have an iPhone and iTouch. Both devices obtain a 169 ip automatically. Forgetting the network and turning WiFi off dosnt help.

I got it working by giving them static IP's and entering the DNS and router settings. Shouldnt really have to do that to be fair. I can get my laptop, wii, psp, ds and sony ericsson on line with no problem, but these apple devices are just a pain in the rear lol.

that all said.. its a brilliant phone and im still getting used to my purchase :)

all fixed... Upgraded my wrt54gs to a new wrt54g2 and it works perfect now :)

Wifi works fine for me now - I did have loads of drops but turned out to be cack router.

Also, I don't think this is "standard" however, I want to backup contacts on to the Sim card - i've had to put my jailbroken 3g back to normal as it was locking more than normal - is there a way without jailbreak?

Yes, through Google contacts, that's how I had to do it with mine, do a Google search for it as I'm too drunk to remember, but it works.
