We're not talking the sort of print heads you find at home these things cost £100s - £1000s each.

Instructional videos on YouTube that contain a minute or two of unnecessary waffle before they tell you what you're looking for.

I've been looking at stretches and exercises specifically for my hip flexors so I had a look on YouTube. Just about all of them start off with some explaining what hip flexors are, what they're for, why it's important to warm them up etc....yes we know all that, just get to the point please....

I found some nice stretches for my ankle going direct to "medical" sites rather than Youtube but problems include having a chair that is high enough to actually achieve the exercises fully. I think demonstrator was short limbed.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

Cheers but I was only using stretches as an example. Just about every video I’ve ever looked for to get instructions on how to do something wastes the first few minutes telling what, why etc which always seems to just be an opportunity for the person in the video to demonstrate how much of an “expert” they are. Don’t waste time showing us how the watch works, just tell us the time

Weather forecast first thing suggested this afternoon would be fine down here in the south-east so I planned to do a bit of gardening with the OH. It's absolutely chucking it down at the moment and the rain radar show more on the way so that's scrubbed.

We have a mixture of weather in Glasgow, Some showers but dry. We were at a funeral service today and as there were only 10 people allowed in, the rest of us stood outside as we could still here the service with the outside speakers. But thankfully it stayed dry,

Argh! Weather forecasters are hopeless, aren't they? They should only be paid on performance. If they get it right they get paid. This would ensure that we don't get soaked everytime we go out!

IIRC I read that as we are on lockdown this will effect weather patterns.

Weather forecasting is not an easy job. When they give a weather report, it's basically a projection, based on current and past weather patterns. These can obviously change. Wind may change direction, causing lots of things to change as a simple example.

People always give them crap for getting it wrong but they are doing their best to monitor what's happening and give their best ideas of what the weather might be. There are so many variables that they can't control. Best way to treat a forecast is to take it as a suggestion of what the weather is likely to be, rather than gospel that it WILL be like that.

This was supposed to the first full weekend for me to have my 5 year old son. Theoretically I could have him as court orders still apply during the lockdown but with him living 130 miles away and my not being able to take him anywhere whilst here it wouldn’t really be practical so he’s better off with his mother until this all goes away.

Sensible decision but it still hard not being able to spend time with him. <<hugs>>

My moan is having the crown on one of my front teeth split down the middle and one half fall out. I can now whistle through the gap and have developed a lisp. It also looks like I can't get it fixed for the foreseeable future. At least no one but John can see my new look but if he doesn't stop laughing he will have a lot more teeth missing than me when I hide his dentures. :D

Lost a couple of relatives this week: My uncle Robert* who I've not seen for a long while to pancreatic cancer and my aunt in Australia, her ex-husband to various medical conditions finally by Corona infection.

Not serious grief, just a bit sad. :(

Our clan keeps getting smaller: Just two sisters and three cousins in the UK plus a few more in Oz

*Yes, Bob was indeed my uncle.

I seem to have hurt the lower part of my back while weeding the garden on Friday, could hardly move while at work on Saturday and today is similar. Just hoping it improves as to not stop me going to work at 5.30am tomorrow as I don't want to add any points on my Bradford factor score which usually stays at zero.

I have lost a filling but at least I didn't swallow this one.Should be having a 6th month checkup this week but that's cancelled..Never mind I just need to brush a lot more regularly especially as I now have more time to do so..And hide his dentures anyway..make it a treasure hunt.;)

Not much fun having bits drop off is it. :D: Hope you stay pain free until normal Dentistry resumes.

I messaged my Dentist and he advised me to swap over to Sensodyne toothpaste, when he heard we were in lock down he brought me a tube plus a mouldable tooth guard to wear a couple of nights a week with an big dollop of the toothpaste on the stump of tooth now exposed.

:D I haven't hidden his dentures ....yet.

John is being an absolute gem and I couldn't imagine being in lock down with anyone else. Not looking forward to the weather being forecast for the next few days though. Being able to get out in the garden and sit in the sun with our morning coffee has become a highlight of our day.

:erm: Have you hidden the TV remote yet, all the old war films?

That should be made illegal.

IMHO only companies with crap people care use it, namely were I work.

Luckily the Bradford Factor scoring has been suspended if it is related to Covid.

In 10 years I have probably only had 5 days off sick but if someone is sick alot then come redundancy it is only fair on everyone if that is taken into account, however if a company wants to keep someone employed there will be additional scoring mechanisms to aid that.

Happy thought - Jet2 credited a full refund to the credit card, less than one week after the flight should have happened.

I've had to put watching Supergirl on hold as it came back with part 1 of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the other parts spread over Batwoman, The Arrow, The Flash & Legends of Tomorrow.

All are Sky One in order, except Batwoman which is E4, the part 2 episode should be on tonight but E4 has skipped the poxy episode.

So I'm very peed off.

I know might just ignore this episode and series and watch Supergirl Pt 1 and forget pt 2.

I feel your pain. I had an op a while back, then my shoulder froze up the next day. Then turned into Parsonage Turner syndrome on top with nerve damage. Cause is still unknown. 6 years on after being in hospital due to pain, then years on morphine and other horrible pain killers, and because of severe muscular atrophy (see pic) and nerve damage I've now lost about 80% use of my right arm. On top of everything else as you know.

Keep using ice pack or heat pads, maybe look into a TENs machine as they can help. Hopefully it'll thaw out soon enough.

OK, as the answer to my post will most probably attract a moan/hate response thought I would post my question here.

I have been very stressed these last couple of months and when I'm stressed I tend to look for things to distract me. Run through all my normal activities, re-read all my favourite books, my house is spotless and weeds are now to afraid to grow.

So for the last couple of days I have been looking for something to do. One or two things in our sitting room have been moved about, ornaments rearranged and plants repotted but the more I fiddled with the small things the more I wanted to rearrange the furniture.

Spent most of yesterday convincing John that it wasn't just a whim.

This morning we have spent nearly 3 hours hefting large pieces of furniture around the room to their new positions. John is knackered.

So to my question. How long must I leave it before I break it to him that I hate how it looks and want to put everything back? :erm: I've already ordered a large bottle of his favourite Whiskey.

The fact is he's expecting to put it all back we men know it's how the world works.

I can understand all that is happening, We are going round the bend chopping and changing to stop the boredom, On another note, I have a frozen shoulder and I have started to do some excercise for it, I just hope the pain eases off each time ,as it is really painful just now !

I had that a year or so ago. One exercise that you can do in bed is lying on one side and raising the arm as far as you can and then lower. Repeat. Took me a month to get some sort of normal mobility back. Even now there's the odd twinge.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

Guess this should be on the happy thread, though John would certainly disagree.

I told him I hated the changes (see my earlier post ) and he banished me to the garden whilst he moved everything back. Being deaf he doesn't realise how loud he talks at times so his very loud comments about 'bloody women' were heard by several neighbours.

:erm: Haven't got the nerve to tell him that he forgot to replace the large area rug. Guess I will leave that for after his Whiskey arrives.

Love him to bits. :romance:

gentle <<hugs>> nash.

I ended up having steroid injections into my shoulder which reduced the pain and enabled me to have physiotherapy. Must be 5/6 years ago now and I still get the odd twinge. :(

The injections were painful but they were a last resort. I had been trying to do the exercises for a couple of weeks and I think they may have worked eventually but I was just in continual pain and not getting any sleep.
My Dr tried giving me the strongest pain killers but they just didn't work so he arranged for me to be seen by a physio who immediately sorted out steroid injections.

Hope you start seeing some improvement soon sweetie. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you . :D xx

As a pain relief junky, I have had both the steroid injections and morphine patches!
Slippery slope for both types of pain relief, ended going to a chiropractor, 1hr every 6months sorted me out.
Osteoarthritis in my spine diagnosed, just keep moving and taking the tablets as required-paracetamol.

In the UK it's Yorkshire...

My moan/pet hate.

I can hear all the kids playing in their respective gardens. SWMBO is sunbathing on the garden bed with the dogs keeping her company. Me, I'm stuck in my office with 2 laptops running, my DX80 video conferencing unit and one of the mesh routers. it's very very warm. My motorbike keeps calling me....

Main PC's fallen over again. Thought it was fixed after replacing some bulging capacitors in the PSU. Now won't even power up.

Perhaps I should just get a new PSU? It's a 350W unit so shouldn't need an expensive replacement.

At 15 odd years old and routinely used for ~8 hours daily I'm not complaining and recently the machine has been on 24/7 as it's now running my media server.

But I need a system that still runs XP SP3. This is a legacy requirement on some client software ( 16 and 32 bit for which no upgrades are available ) so I have to keep the old girl running. Plus it has all my video processing and DVD authoring programs

The lappy runs W7 Pro ( Classic shell XP look alike) for anything later.

Pretty sure hyper v or similar virtualisation products will allow you to run 16 bit and certainly 32 bit

They do - that’s what we used for embedded systems that only ran on non-supported Window versions (and you’d be amazed how many University research systems do...).

Looks like we're forced to ditch our Cisco VHD box which has a handy down scaled SCART output and have a V6 which doesn't. I've booked delivery of the self install kit for the middle of the month.

Now I need to find a tech fix to output a DS SCART feed to the DVD HDD recorder, not that we've recorded anything for a long time, and modulator that avoids DRM crap. I seem to recall some threads in the TV section about that so time to search through the back posts / threads.

I got an ominous letter from work this morning.

It was asking me in for a meeting saying that due to coronavirus they need to reduce overheads, restructure.

I can take someone in with me as I will be meeting with the HR Manager the General Manager and Quality Manager (my boss).

It does say my job is at risk, but no-one else over than the QM or DQM can do my job.

I'm expecting the worse, but if I do lose my job, I can survive 6 months before I will have to give my car back.

Oh dear, I hope that they have a better solution than the one you fear.

Make sure you go in with a good case to show how your duties require someone to do the work full time and not as a side job for the QM and DQM to fit in along side their normal work. <<hugs>>

Well the QM and DQM are the only ones who cover me when I'm off, and they are normally busy.

The DQM has been in furlough as he has terminal cancer, he goes back Monday.

When a group of staff are put "at risk", it’s normal for all of them to be interviewed, even the ones they want to keep.

Here’s hoping you’re OK.

I have never quit a job since 1989, since then I've been made redundant from every job since then (all for of them).

Desktop PC's on the blink: Thought it was the power supply so I got a replacement but the machine still won't power up. I bridged the "power on" line on the PSU connector to force a power up, which happened, but the machine won't even start POST so something's gone down in the power control and reset circuits. It's all in one big chip so it looks like a new build is on the cards re-using some of what I currently have.

Not really complaining as I built the PC over 15 years ago and it's run 8 hours a day and more recently 24/7 as a media server. That's around 50,000 hours. Pretty good for domestic electronics.

OS is going to be a decision, I'd already been toying with making a move to Linux so maybe with a new build now is the time.

*brief topic swerve*

Have you used Linux before?

If not, it's quite easy to come to grips with nowadays and has extensive help all over the internet.

I dual boot with Win 7 and Ubuntu Studio (separate drives), lots of posters on here will advise too.

Unless you're a big gamer you won't miss windows ;)

I tinkered with Red Hat many moons ago but that was before distros with a decent GUI were available.

If I go that route I'll be on here asking lots of questions. :D

Just on the off chance I googled the Mobo ( Nforce3-a) and after picking myself up off the floor there's a second hand tested and guaranteed Mobo in Riga, Latvia which will come with CPU* and RAM on ebay for £39 plus P&P.

Got to be the fix short term. :)

Order placed.

*CPU is Athlon64, better than my Sempron.

Not so much a moan, as a bit of bureaucratic madness. Today I received a letter advising that I would get an appointment for a bone density scan, but that due to Covid-19 there may be a significant delay.

Weirdly I received the appointment a couple of days ago for a week on Saturday. Which surprised me at how soon it was.

For Linux, Mint is pretty good, most things just work and the desktop (Cinnamon) is very nice BUT there is a spat developing between Mint and Canonical who make Ubuntu on which it's based.

I use OpenSuse and a new version is out soon. You may want to check out OpenSuse Tumbleweed which is a rolling distro, updates are a little tricky (you should use a command rather than the desktop app) but because it's a rolling distro you never need to upgrade it. KDE is a great desktop but does need a bit of oomph to use fully and properly.

What is nice about Linux is you can use live distro's to prove all your hardware is compatible before you install it. Some people can get quite excitable for and against certain hardware depending on how the vendor supports Linux (open/closed source drivers).

I've lost count of the various distro's I've downloaded and 'live tested' on a couple of ancient laptops (a 10yr old and a 14yr old). Amazing that many often work fine, some just need an audio or network tweak. ;)

I have had a couple of instance where the live distro worked fine but once installed wireless didn't and visa-versa so having an ethernet cable can be helpful.
