Yup - don’t skimp (if possible) on beds or carpets.

One of the most important decisions to make is buying a bed, You want to be comfortable and not end up with a mattress too hard or so soft

tweetiepooh 30-01-2024 09:31

Re: What have you just bought?

I agree that as we spend on average 33% of our lives asleep a good bed is important. We went for a zip link as I like a firmer bed than my wife. An additional benefit we thought of is that the two parts can be turned and rotated independently which should be easier than trying to manoeuvre a single super-king unit. We aren't getting any younger and don't want this action to leave us needing to stay in bed.
One difference between our Hypnos and the more expensive Vispring is we get 10 years warrantee compared to the 30 years on some of the latter's models.
Still our last bed (Nusleep) cost £900 in 2001, according to the RPI calculations about £1800 today but prices have risen hugely since COVID, materials and energy costs forcing this. If only we had had the money a couple of years ago!
But surely there does come a point where the prices start to get a bit silly. A £40k bed would have to offer a heck of a lot more than £4k. Some makers seem to suggest a double emperor size which is 4m wide, maybe that's the £40k bed :).

Mr K 30-01-2024 10:04

Re: What have you just bought?

For 40k I'd expect a bed to be able to travel through time and space aswell.

peanut 30-01-2024 10:31

Re: What have you just bought?

A decent bed / mattress that you can afford (not silly prices), and a decent topper if needed will make the bed last longer. Rotate mattress as required. Carpets though... I have to agree, but we didn't have the choice when we moved in to our place but what we have is still going fine after 20 years. It helps to get a decent carpet cleaner and clean once a year (at least). But now to replace the carpets it's not the cost it's the hassle of it all that's the problem.

mrmistoffelees 30-01-2024 11:08

Re: What have you just bought?

On the subject of carpets not only does it help to have a carpet cleaner (we do ours twice a year and I find it strangely therapeutic) it’s even more important to have a decent vacuum cleaner. We initially had a bissell and now we have a Tineco carpet one pro

More important than a carpet cleaner though is the vacuum and I won’t go past sebo

I miss when the stamps just had 1st or 2nd on them. You kept using them regardless what the current price of stamps was but I guess too many people would buy in bulk and keep going for years after purchasing.

Re: What have you just bought?

To go with our new bed we need some new bedding as the bed is bigger.
Problems - neither of us like fully synthetic and wife doesn't want pure cotton, too hard to dry and needs ironing. (Fair enough, she does those tasks). My wife likes our 4.5TOG duvet but I would prefer something warmer.

Fitted sheet - easy - polycotton white.
Duvet - we both like the idea of down so have gone for a dual TOG duck down where she gets 4.5TOG and I get 9TOG. Goose down would be nicer but costs double. A John Lewis eiderdown was somewhat out of our budget.

It's the cover that is harder. The designs and colours I like are all in pure cotton or microfibre or not available in the right size or far too expensive. My wife has designs she likes but most I don't. I want bright colours she more green focus. Fortunately neither of us like "pretty" floral patterns.

Have a look at either a wool or linen duvet we have a 4.5tog linen duvet and it keeps us cool in the summer and during the winter it keeps me that warm I need the ceiling fan on.

Similarly try a French linen duvet cover

Great thing about linen is you don’t have to iron it although I generally iron the pillowcases. The duvet cover gets thrown in the tumble dryer with some wool dryer balls. The sheet and pillow cases go in separately to dry with dryer balls also

Welsh lamb is far too expensive for mere mortals like me.

Lambs are usually off milk and onto grass by 8 weeks, and they go to meet their maker around 6 months of age.

12 month membership to one of my local gyms.

There are 4 near me that I tend to flit between depending on offers and how antisocial I’m feeling. So one of them has a half price annual deal where it’s £125 instead of £250. The other gyms are 24 hour places so these are the ones I go to when I train at 4am to be alone.

The one I signed up to today opens at 6am and is always dead until around 6.45. When I’m doing weights (rather than cardio) I can easily get in a good session in about 40 minutes so it’s a no-brainer really. Cardio in the evenings and hopefully my sleep pattern will eventually return to that of a vaguely normal human again for the first time since about 2018.

We bought the MFP479fdw at £399 then £100 cash back. Don't need the f (fax) but it was cheaper than the model without fax. Now replaced by the MFP 4302 £375 with £120 cash back = £255 inc VAT. HP stuff works well with Linux which was a big issue with us.

I do still use a separate milk frother for it which does cold as well. It does a much better job at heating / frothing milk for everything else too and just as easy to use. But yes I agree it's a great machine and really pleased with it so far.

I'm getting on with the HP MFP 283fdw colour printer.

I need to get my nephew to see if he can get it to scan to the NAS from the printer LED screen, it will work from the program

Brother compact mono laser printer, I hardly use my Epson inkjet so the ink always dries up and even after cartridge replacement and cleaning the nozzles are still blocked, so hopefully going laser will fix this issue as I can't risk barcodes on flight boarding passes not working!

What was your old printer model, I had to have 1 small enough to slide between 2 shelves so I settled for the smallest Brother I could find HL-L2400DW, I'm hoping if I don't use it for a year it'll still print ok?

Much Knox bike gear (two jackets and one pair of trousers)
Ninja 10 in 1 cooker thing (gift for SWMBO’s father)

On subject of Ninja, Paul, how’s the woodfire grill? Worth the money ?

Superglue to repair the cracked rear light array on my car. No way to identify the guy on the eBike who ran into my car... on my drive!

So new laser printer is great and far better than an inkjet.

My question is if I don't use it for several months is that going to cause me issues with printing like it would with an inkjet?

That's what I thought but I read things about humidity causing issues.

mine is sat under the stairs neither my mono or colour printers have shown any issues. Had the mono for a few years and hardly ever used it and had cheap toners installed

The lasers are generally a much better bet than inkjet. I've a mono that is a couple of years old and after moderate use still prints fine.
