Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Apologies for what might be a real newbie type question, but as a Bath & England rugby fan I'm toying with subscribing to Sky Sports for the Australia tour in June. I'm already on TV-XL so get most of the European and all the Premiership games included. I'm also utterly loath to line Sky's pockets anymore than I need to, for all the obvious reasons.

But what I can't get my head round..is there any logic to how Sky allocate particular sports to their channels? I've worked out that VM have one price for SS1 by itself, one for SS2 by itself and another for the pair - with HD being another level. Fine, I get that. But would paying for, say, SS1 & HD guarantee getting all the matches in a particular tournament, or is the only way of doing that, to take the full subscription? And does SS3, SS4 etc only get included with the whole package?

Sorry for what might be really basic questions - I've always avoided even looking at Sky prices but I'm just half-tempted this time round when I compare them with ticket prices that I don't bat an eyelid at (and I'm sure Sky realise that!!)

Sorry for a long post..

I can't answer the allocation question, but the answer to "does SS3, SS4 etc only get included with the whole package?" is yes.

BT Sport deal was re-sign last summer for the rights to broadcast BT Sport Europe and BT Sport Freeview on Virgin Media UK.

We feel the BT Sport will not be up until when the English PL rights is up (End of season 2018/2019).

Note from August EPL football will move to Saturdays at 5.30pm on BT Sports.

With the 12.45pm games moving to Sky Sports with Sky also getting the rights to Friday nights Football from the EPL.

Please prove me wrong.

Today my wife spoke with VM over this. And they say IT WONT HAPPEN, as they will lose too many customers.

I am under this impression. At the moment VM have 'added' Sky Sports Package, and we pay - say 25 quid.

Are we saying that, they are putting up the price again. And it doesn't make sense. We already pay for extra SPORTS CHANNELS or is it VM saying that they will charge us for BT Sports. But claim it charging separate Sky channels.

I know there is Sky Sports Extra. But we had that before.

Someone PLEASE EXPLAIN

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

No its that you can no longer take just Sky Sports 1 or 2 as you can choose now but will only be able to take the full Sky Sprts collection.

However it is going up by £2 but that is Sky price rise as their customers will also get the hike.

Quote:

Currently you can take Sky Sports 1, home of Sky’s Premier League football coverage, or Sky Sports 2 for £21.50/month extra. This is cheaper than going for the Sky Sports Collection - which gives you Sky Sports 1-5 plus Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports News HQ - for £29.25/month.

As we reported last month, the standard price of the Sky Sports Collection on Virgin Media will be going up to £31.75/month in June.

Sky TV customers will similarly be paying £2.50 more for their Sky Sports bundles every month from June 1 onwards.

So nearly £22 for just one SS channel or £32 for all of them. Which of course is much better value.

It's only better value if you watch the extra channels.
I don't think it's being applied to those who currently just take Sky Sports 1 & 2 is it? It's just not being permitted to add those channels in the future. So existing Sky Sports 1/2 customers should not be impacted.

See TV Sports Markets twitter (and scroll down) - numerous announcements from Eurosport today.

- Will spend $5bn on sports rights over 10 years (presumably that's across Europe; not just UK)
- Channel TV is profitable and growing
- Will target direct subscribers (ie not just being part of basic packs)
- 200k direct subs currently; "on march to 1 million" (presumably across Europe)
- Has acquired Wimbledon highlights in UK
- Has acquired worldwide rights to French rugby (must exclude 6N in UK; position re Sky rights unclear - has Sky handed back?)
- Various other rights acquisitions in different European countries

Added to the acquisition of Olympic rights, taking the Australian Open exclusively live in UK and recent rights deals for European Athletics and with World Snooker this is a further pointer that Eurosport is aiming for significant growth - both in the UK and across Europe.

Talk Talk customers on social media are not happy. Must admit I'd be hacked off too. Talk Talk where going so well until the hacking scandal. Since then they've been losing customers in pretty significant numbers.

Or indeed, a nosh up in a chip shop. Clearly they have problems, but slicing into the attractions of your product are not the way to do it.

I think they should have addressed the problems, reassured their existing and future customers that the problems were behind them (with an independent assessment) and then start thinking about re-branding.

Alternatively, a merger with or a sale to a more respected organisation might have been better.

The way they are going about this it will end up with the company folding.

I think is probably the correct analysis. TalkTalk's share price has now recovered somewhat from its low of 184p and it's experienced its lowest quarter of churn.
I think if any company was going to pounce on TalkTalk, I would expect it to be Free of France which is a value operator like TalkTalk. However, I would have expected it to have done so before now.

When the league started it was just the football league and Welsh teams were encouraged to join. When the Welsh league started it was predominantly amateur. Welsh clubs were given an option to switch to that league but didn't because of quality of opposition (the English Football league is professional) Most Welsh clubs who were in the English league chose to stay, even the smaller clubs.

Draws will be regionalised throughout the competition and seeded for the first three rounds, with the final to be played in March.

Then I have little to no sympathy for them , you can't complain if you can't be bothered to explore other avenues. Whether we like it or not switching for a better deal has become a way of life.

In many cases a call and a mention your thinking of switching results in a discount.

Still the same Now TV channels and on-demand content, just with the addition of the Freeview suite of channels.

Would there be any benefit to me by purchasing this new Now TV box? I read somewhere that I could get more access to on demand, like the first few episodes of the new Game of Thrones, if I cannot get those episodes then it would be a total waste of time buying the Now TV box.

The box doesn't buy you the content, you need to buy an Entertainment pass for that. Best bet is to get a free trial and see what you think. Currently, I think there's just a few episodes of season 6 left so may not be the best time for you.

Yes I know about the entertainment pass Andrew, and thanks for the reply, I would have hoped that the on demand would have been longer than just 30 days for episodes of GOT, but it doesn't look like it, seems daft!

Until recently every episode of Game of Throwns was on Now TV and you could have watched them all free with a 14-day trial. However, at the end of each series, HBO removes them to encourage sales of the boxsets and the episodes of the last series stay around for 30 days each before being removed. Before and during Series 7, I'm sure they'll all be back up there.

Thx Andrew, so in your opinion, or anyone else who wishes to comment, should I buy the new Now TV box in case it may be better than the older version?

HBO Nordic, and I assume HBO Now leave GOT, and all other HBO shows, on all the time. Sky paid HBO masses of money for a limited rights window.

Due to the Sky deal, HBO Now can not launch in the UK. Not ideal for UK consumers.

It will be horses for coursers. Someone posted a link to the new box and there seemed to be several options, but unless you need another non recordable terrestrial Freeview box, the current black £15 box seems all that is needed for a Virgin subscriber. But check it out for your personal requirements.

I think two advantages are:
1) It is 50Hz output compared to the 60Hz output of the older Now TV boxes. This should produce smoother pictures.
2) It has a Freeview EPG together with the pay-TV channels. The channels can be paused for 30 minutes; the current boxes don't have the pause facility and a more limited EPG.

Pause only applies to live Freeview channels. Why would anyone with a Tivo need that?

Some people have problems with lack of 50hz. Both of my TVs running the current 60HZ box don't suffer from any problems. It is a case though that each persons results will vary.

What is the price difference between the current black box and the new one?

My mistake - I thought all channels were pausable mot just the Freeview channels.

At the moment the current box is £15 (though there are deals that make it virtually free) and the new box is £40. If you can't pause the pay-TV channels then I can't see many advantages to a TIvo customer in having the newer box.

Setanta Sports in Ireland has now rebranded to Eir Sport. Setanta Sports Ireland is now Eir Sport 1 whilst Setanta Sports 1 is now Eir Sport 2.
http://www.eirsport.ie/discover-eir-sport

The only two businesses remaining under the Setanta Sports brand are Setanta Sports Eurasia and Setanta Sports Asia. Setanta Sports Eurasia is still Irish-owned whilst Setanta Sports Asia is owned by Discovery. I guess it's likely that Discovery would merge it with its Eurosport brand in the future.

Premier Sports which shared its satellite stream with Setanta Sports 1 will presumably share its satellite stream with Eir Sport 2.

Following a cull of channels recently it looks like Premier Sports is next to get the chop from Talk Talk. Premier Sports tweeted earlier today to confirm they won't be available on the Talk Talk platform in the near future.

Whenever their sales people harrass you in the shopping centres they only ever push their broadband service and don't tend to mention the tv side unless you mention it.

To be fair to TalkTalk, they added BT Sport this year and Premier Sports is a pretty niche channel. They know they can't compete with VM and Sky on the TV front but they do have the Sky channels except Atlantic, though some will baulk at their only being in SD.

I did say that some will have problems with the channels being in SD. Equally, others will be happy to make the savings over VM or Sky and accept them in SD.

Stumbled across this post by coincidence just as I was checking out the Now TV site. It seems to show a Sky Cinema channel being paused, suggesting all live channels can be paused. http://www.nowtv.com/tv-smart-box

Always a case of when not if. Wonder if Virgin can respond in any way, maybe a tie-up with Eurosport?
