A HP M479FDW printer, with £100 cashback comes to £299 inc VAT. What is annoying is that the DW variant (no fax) was the same price but is now more expensive. Delivered tomorrow and the claims for 3 year support and the cash back will go in PDQ. It is Linux compatible (essential) and does copy/scanning which is something my wife wanted. The fax line won't get used unless really needed.

My current OKI is producing nice magenta pages and the fuser unit shows 1% though it has not done anywhere near the suggested level.

John Lewis are refunding me £200 from the TV(price promise) because it dropped in price for Black Friday, very happy although I did miss out on a free soundbar but I do get a £100 voucher I can likely off load to parents.

Box of Cadburys chocolate fingers.

Been really strict (by “really” I mean “occasionally”) with my diet and miraculously I’ve dropped my body fat % lower than expected.

So I’ve treated myself

I hope it's worth that amount of effort. And I'm not talking about the chocky fingers either. I don't think I'd ever understand that kind of level of control/punishment/logic etc for whatever reason.

Easy, I’m 50 next year and want to stay in better shape than anyone else I know of around my age.

Plus it helps stave off the inevitably of the return of the emotional “dark clouds” I was experiencing that started me off going to the gym 7 years ago.

Oh and I have a massive ego.

That is a really nice TV and soundbar. I don't have any idea what soundbars are like as I use an AV with 5.1 speakers. But the reviews look excellent. Looks nothing like those cheap ones you can get too.

My TV is just a cheap 4k 42" LG one (£400), does what I need and is it great for TV out from PC and hooked up to the AV etc. But I can't fault it at all. But yours at that price it must be unreal compared to something like mine.

Thanks, it was a huge step up going from a 49KS9000 that had a backlight with bleeding in the corners to this which has 700+ dimming zones instead, I had good reasons for not going the OLED route didn't need the hassle and worry about burn in and this is considered nearly as good without any hassle and with PS5 it's great too.

A couple of yellow sticker bargains. 2 packs of Wiltshire cure sliced ham: Was £3.25, mine for 79p.

I'll wrap the slices separately in cling film to go in the freezer. I can then have a slice (s) at a time as needed for rolls or sarnies.

Got it all setup now as the soundbar came yesterday, I'm breaking it in by watching the first 2 Captain America movies during the day to see how everything sounds and looks and I'm very impressed compared to my old TV and soundbar, no more clouding or light bleed seen and the sound with my dodgy ears is a great improvement over the old soundbar.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, it's a cracking TV that. I find TVs today need a lot of tweaking out of the box. Things like 'Real Cinema' setting is terrible, makes motion look too smooth and cheap looking. Basically you have to turn most of the TV settings to off.

I have a decent 5.1 system but will never get the most out of it because of the neighbours. But it does make a huge difference also makes speech a lot clearer etc.

I have a cheaper LG and the most used settings for me is the energy saving settings, as I watch TV late at night it turns the brightness and backlight down to whatever level you want from full, down to minimum. This most used feature doesn't even have a button on the remote control that came with the TV which is really annoying so had to buy one that does have it. Other wise you have to go in the settings every time which is a bit of a pain.

The first thing to do with a high end TV is disable the energy settings otherwise it ruins the picture, this TV doesn't have a backlight only a brightness setting which I leave close to max, other setting modes can reduce the picture brightness, think it's local dimming which controls the brightness in individual areas depending on what's on the screen.

The QN95C out of the box settings I find fantastic so didn't turn anything off apart from Local dimming set to high and contrast enhancer off and tweaked a few other things it was far easier than my older KS9000.

I have to becareful not to shake the house as my ears are not perfect and don't want to annoy the neighbours but the sound is great through the soundbar and speech is very clear for me.

I've just been offered a firmware update not going to risk installing it!

I think you will find that is does. I believe the whole point of the Q led system is to backlight the panel with mini LEDs so the local dimming works a lot better

Yes I meant it didn't have a separate backlight slider bar option like my old TV.

I'm so happy blacks are black with no issues unlike the old telly.

That's a really good price, I've got a couple of 2nd Gens as I now use 3rd Gen with the clock on it. Though I only use it for the clock and to turn lights on / off and to check notifications. Other than that I haven't found much use for them. Not sure a screen will add anything for me but for that price I might see if I do have a use. I just find sending things off a bit of a hassle though.

Ah balls, just checked and it's seems it's just UPS and the nearest drop off is miles away from me. It's always that kind of thing that puts me off due to the hassle. Still, there's Black Friday....

So you say you just got a 'watch' but it's just one that's worth £13k-16k and also you can spend that kind of money without telling your partner. Blimey, I take it that's how the other half lives. But very nice watch, good for you. Wow :tu:

Without getting into too much detail I didn’t pay anywhere near the prices you’re quoting. Prices for watches are dropping but resellers have stock that they paid high for and are trying to recoup on only VC or AP are really holding value oh and of course the Daytona chronograph

SWMBO doesn’t tell me what she spends money on or where the next rescue dog has come from

To add, I’m not ‘the other half’ far from it

I hate clocks, The only one we have is an antique French secessionist clock which randomly chimes when it feels like it and gains 10 minutes every day. It's got an attitude that I admire, refusing to behave and doing its own thing.

I collect vintage Swatch watches and do wear them, I have just found, and bought, a Vivienne Westwood 1992 Cherub Watch that I have had on my wish list for a couple of years.

I owned just over half a dozen of low-mid priced watches from Seikos, Tissot and a couple of Citizens watches. Nothing too expensive or high end.

I did try a Rolex on but it just didn't feel right for me in a lot of ways. I found one I liked that was on my wish list for a long time which was the Omega Seamaster and I'm totally content with it. It's all I've ever wanted and I'm lucky to own one. Since then I've then stopped looking and totally lost the desire to buy or wear anything else. So it probably ended up saving me money buying other watches to collect. Also at least my Omega has increased in price since if I ever sell it, it'd make a bit of a profit.

My wife is happy as she has now claimed all of my other watches as her own apart from the Omega obviously.

The Seamaster is a beautiful series of watches

Watch collecting is a funny old game, there’s always that ‘oh just ore more’ which inevitably leads to several more. Congratulations on having the restraint to stop buying !!!

Right now I’m looking at and choosing between

Cool white Christmas tree lights. 120 string with action. £9 at B&Q. They're to replace a much older set with 40 static LEDs that's over 20 years old and some of the LEDs are failing. At the time these were special import at £40 and there were none in the UK shops at the time so my tree was pretty unique together with a blue action set.

I have a more recent 80 cool LED action set so I'll combine these, probably on static setting.

Pixel 8 Pro 256GB Obsidian from John Lewis - I was going to wait until the New Year to replace my current OnePlus 7 Pro (four and half years old), as the new OnePlus 12 will be out then, but pretty sure my current phone won't last till then.

JL had a trade-in promo code - I only got £24 trade in value for the old phone (because of the state of the back), but they added a £125 discount code, which made the cost more palatable.

I also like the fact that Google have guaranteed Operating System and Security updates for the next seven years - my current phone stopped getting them after three years (still on Android 12).

A real pot grown Christmas tree, with roots.

Had one years ago. Did for a few xmas's, putting it outside each year before it got too big to bring in. Had to release into the garden envetually before that got too big and had to chop it down. Will choose the location more carefully next time!

What's your thoughts on the Pixel 8 Pro including battery life and does it play nice with Android Auto in your car?

Re: What have you just bought?

I have no issues with the battery life (seems to be lasting longer than my OnePlus 7 Pro when it was new), and I haven’t tried it with Android Auto yet - I’ll feed back when I do.

So far so good with the Pixel - transferred all the Apps over seamlessly, but it’s a PITA having to re-authenticate all my banking/shopping/mail Apps (but happy to do so, as it shows good security on behalf of the vendors).

No issues so far.

Thanks for highlighting this - I downloaded the free 3 day demo yesterday (played Zombies, which was fun), so I’ll look out for the deal.

I'm happy to hear that you have found a way to listen to your records on a machine that suits your requirements. Unlike Hugh with his super powers :D :DI couldn't find the actual Motorola with either of the codes that you gave but you may be able to find others who have the same interests and who share your passion for older equipment on a forum such as the ones I have given links to below. :)

A new car, well new to me anyway. Ford Puma.
Worked out how to drive the thing, but as for all the other gadgets, 'infotainment', on board computers, that will take some time with the 500 page manual.... Wonder how car battery's cope with all this extra stuff. Heated everything - not that I'm complaining atm!

How do they play stereo grooves properly? I mean they merge left/right channels so it sounds like true mono!!!!

That happens automatically. On a stereo record, left is on one side of the groove and right on the other. A mono pickup just takes the up and down motion, so picks up both channels equally.

I love the ingenuity of stuff like that. Like how they added colour to a black and white TV signal without stopping B&W TVs working.

I can't agree with that. Stereo sounds so much richer and fuller. Especially when musicians take advantage for the full sound stage. Making instruments come from either side or fade between them. You would loose out on that in mono. Like a lot of Beatles songs when they started experimenting with stereo they really made good use of it. It really surrounds you.

Then again with new digital stuff you get full spatial audio on music and movies/TV that really gives you a surround sound effect from headphones.

A Business Class return flight, London to LA, for early April.

Bit of background - my wife and I are Springsteen fans (we've seen him three times in the UK); so is her brother (who has recently retired to the UK from the US).

They have never been to see Springsteen together, so my brother-in-law and I have planned a surprise trip for my wife (and my brother-in-law, but it's not a suprise for him, as he's helping arrange it) to see Springsteen in LA (Inglewood) in early April - they will fly out on the Tuesday before the concert, get an AirBnB for the week in Venice Beach or Marina Del Rey, and fly back the Sunday evening..

So, to make it extra special, I've surprised her with a Business Class seat, which means she can sleep on the way back (the seats convert into lie-flat beds).

After 23 years of use we have splashed out on a new bed, Hypnos Wool Origins 10 Super King Zip Link. We went the zip link so my wife can have medium and I firm.

We thought this was expensive but the sales man remarks that some folk spend near ten times that. Zoiks £40k for a bed!!!!

Why not? Plenty of people spend that on a car, which they use a lot less and doesn't last as long.
