Tivo isnt V+ version 2 it is an entirely different product with different (and in my view far superior) features.

Just as v+ didnt have an eject tape button there are features Tivo doesnt need

Has anybody else noticed some HD channels are using less recording space. 1hr was about 8GB, now on Living, E4, FX, is about 5GB.Have they reduced the bit rate or changed the compression? I noticed these channels are using QAM 256 others 64 QAM dont know if they where already.

Tomorrow nights Frozen Planet on BBC ONE on 101 and BBC ONE HD on 108 have 2 different episodes listed.

Channel 101 has the episode "On Thin Ice" which is correct

Channel 108 has the episode "The Last Frontier" which is wrong.

I would change the series link to New and Reruns to be on the safe side.

Is there a way to turn off the rewind 10 sec when you press play after fast forwarding? Why do they have this feature this day in age people are quick with pressing play at the right time without it rewinding 10 seconds!!

I have to agree that I find this also a great feature. Took a lot of retraining having previously mastered the V+ timing but now I think I've mastered it.
Only problem is when visiting the in laws I look like a complete idiot when trying to use their V+. maybe need to persuade them to upgrade.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I too like the skip back feature of the fast forward, however I do wish that Virgin didn't nanny the speed for the UK. When fast forwarding at x3 the skip back is a huge 30 seconds (15 secs @ x2 & 0 secs @ x1) which would be okay if the speed of the fast forward was fast! If you look at the rewinding speed which is twice that of the fast forward speed, the skip back feature is almost magical when traveling at a good rate of knots. With the current speed you have to wait till you see a good chunk of the program in order for the skip back to rewind to a place you want and those with good reflexes could be sitting through 15+ seconds of adverts.

So what I'm trying to say is either increase the fast forward speed by 50% (which I'd prefer) or reduce the skip back by 50% to give us what I think the feature was designed.

To answer your actual question, rather than simply tell you it's a great feature so learn to love it like everyone else seems to be doing! :p:

No - I don't beleive it is possible to turn the feature off, however a 'work around' if you really don't like it is to press Pause rather than play.

I know this sounds like a naff solution as it requires 2 buton presses not one (Pause, followed by play), however, trust me, you soon get into a nice knack of a sort of 1 'rolling' buton press of the thumb hitting the pause button and allowing your thumb to then roll up and hit the play almost simultaniously.

It's either that of re-train yourself to be slightly slower on the quick draw ;)

Cheers
T

Isn't it funny-Tivo's best feature as far as I'm concerned. I was so fed up of doing it manually with sky+ and then v+. However, yet again Tivo's lack of configurability (real word?) is the problem-trying to resolve issues with one size fits all solutions. Virgin won't win people over in the numbers it needs/wants until it empowers the end user.

To be honest though that can cause as many problems as it solves.

The more granular you allow things to be changed, the more you have to test and the more you risk things breaking.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't be able to change anything, but some things have to be considered 'core' functionality

I think it's great on fast forward, though I find it a bit annoying on rewind though. I often find I press play when it's fast forwarding and the remote ignores my play request as it isn't pointing right at the box. I then find myelf rewinding back then pressing play and ending back where I started! :D

We're only talking about being able to change your own padding defaults and the ability to turn step back after fast forward on and off, not full control over the whole box. I accept your point about too much user control, but that's not what the majority of people want, just some limited control over the niggly little things that won't affect the way Tivo works but will improve the end user experience immeasurably.

Tivo is a brilliant product, but you're letting it and yourselves down when people are actively avoiding it simply because they want to be able to be in control of their own series links. I mean seriously, who allowed the current solution to express series links to go out? That should never have left the office. Even if I could live with the default padding, I still have to set up series links manually because I deliberately got myself a stb which was capable of storing more than 10 episodes of a particular show and has enough storage to mean I can keep then almost indefinitely without encountering issues. Poor.

That was the right thing to do; everyone won.

Those who wanted it early and were prepared to have it with a few features missing were happy and those who wanted it fully featured wait. They don't have to wait any longer than if Tivo had been held back until everything was done (but they'd still be waiting now, and some possibly still are). Meanwhile, I've had around 8 months of vastly increased functionality.

And Reminders being 'core' functionality on a PVR where all (3) tuners record, is wrong in my view. A nice extra; maybe, but not core; not if the PVR is being used as intended.

Completely right. Being up front about things like red button from the start meant everyone was able to make an informed choice.

However, there are some things that Virgin had the opportunity to put right in the last update, and they got some of those things wrong. That's different.

I can't imagine for one second that there won't be further changes (in a good way) to the padding options, but I think it was a lose/lose situation for Virgin and this update. If they'd done nothing, the moaning on the forum about programmes missing the end would have continued. Do appreciate however that because it was a 'quick fix' that it's now annoyed a different set of customers.

BTW for the benefit of those that may be currently suspended from this forum - that's my own personal opinion, and not anything official.

Would perhaps be more intuitive if the first press of the skip button took you into FF (or RW) mode and then to the next mark - may be a good reason it doesn't, but can't think of it right now. For those with third party programmable remotes it may be worth a custom setting on the skip buttons?

BenMcr 07-12-2011 16:06

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Pressing Skip in play mode goes back/foward 30 seconds. You can then build them up. so press Skip 4 times it'll fastfoward 2 minutes and then go back to normal speed

Very different tech from TiVo though... I bet you still have problems with some products. Nothing is 100% problem free.

Thanks Ben. That sounds like a good reason to me :)

I am very interested in upgrading my V+HD box to a 1TB Tivo box and as far as I know installation and activation is free to existing customers, but I would have to pay a charge of £3 every month. So, could someone let me know if I am mistaken or not?

Thanks

Sorry that's incorrect

A 1TB box is £49.95 activation for all customers

For existing customers a £49.95 installation applies as well

It's the 500GB TiVo that is £0 activation for everyone

Thanks for that I must have been mistaken. So, do you also get free installation with the 500GB Tivo box and you only have to pay £3 per month or do you have to pay a installation charge regardless?

Thanks

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

All existing customers at present have to pay an install for for both TiVo boxes

So the total install cost for the 500GB TiVo is £49.95 and it's £99.90 for the 1TB box

Why did they bother changing from that being the cost of the box with free installation? Are they avoiding tax or something?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

If I had to guess? It's more that people accept that things cost to get installed, but didn't understand why it cost £100 for the 1TB activation

Just had a virgin rep put a card with contact no.it says free Tivo. is this a genuine offer

Doz007 07-12-2011 18:51

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

The 500gb TiVo is free anyway but a £50 installation fee applies. Maybe the rep could waiver that fee depending on which services you take out. :)

Ta doz007 I'm a virgin customer think I'll give him a call and see what he says !

---------- Post added at 18:06 ---------- Previous post was at 17:58 ----------

Rang the rep he said the free Tivo was only for new customers if I was interested to ring virgin but the 500 stb was free

Are you talking about Tivo? The tivo I got in April was not half baked but offered functionality far above the V plus box. The only people fooled were those who listened to the whingers who misrepresented tivo and focused on a few minor niggles and blew them up out of all proportion.

It did not take much research to discover that red button would not be on the initial release, if that was important to someone.

A excellent unbiased opinion of the Tivo.:tu:

It's true. The only problems with TiVo ARE "minor niggles". There are perhaps too many of them but it is, on the whole, an excellent piece of kit.

---------- Post added at 19:26 ---------- Previous post was at 19:21 ----------

Anyone know how TiVo decides which channels to record its suggestions on? I have them from the "audio definition" versions of main channels that and right now its recorded a programme from one channel, and then recorded the very next programme on the same channel, but one from the SD version of the channel, the other from the HD version.

Sounds like a problem with quota on the system. I know TiVo is very popular, but that's not normal! lol

Thank you, I have gone the whole hog and ordered the 1TB machine, no more worrying about trying to fit all the lovely HD on the V+, although I am keeping that machine as well. :)

well my original tivo was returned some time ago due to issues it had with my LG tv im now thinking about trying Tivo again as I now have a panasonic tv but have things improved much since the latest update?

Sorry for not reading through thread way to many pages.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I've had the Virgin Tivo since February and until the 15.2 update I wouldn't have recommended it to anybody, I stuck with it and believe me Sky was a massive temptation. Now, I whole heartedly recommend this machine. So, so many nice little UI touches, good speed and great tuner use. I feel there's absolutely nothing out there to touch it, not even love or money could take the TiVo away...
