Merry christmas mate. Hope its a good one!

does anyone think a ton of bbc and itv archives are being wasted? I see tons of episodes of classic eastenders and classic coronation street on youtube and they get shut down due to copyright strikes.

Is there a reason why itv and bbc dont monetise the archives? for example even if they dont want to upload to itv player or iplayer or britbox why not upload to youtube? get something back at least

hmm thought in the streaming world old contracts dont cover it?

for example wwe wrestlers used to get paid whenever dvds or videos with them on were sold. But with streaming they got a ton less it was like a token amount

i suppose with all the episodes out there it may still add up

One of the proposals for helping with BBC funding is for archive material to be made available for a fee.

Quite a lot of the comedy/drama archive from BBC (and ITV) is now showing on the free channels on Freeview, VirginMedia linear and stream, and on Sky linear - but most is NOT available on Sky Stream/Glass.

VirginMedia is missing Rewind TV - but so is Sky Stream. Sky Stream also missing Talking Pictures and the That's family.

In the US they still have Britbox which has now added BBC documentary content to it's top tier.

Does 'archive material' fall under the same label as 'repeats' do you think?

Because we've been paying for those all the time :D

In its heyday, people complained endlessly about repeats on TV channels!

Funny how people tend to want things only when they have gone, despite railing against them at the time.

I think that this was because there were only 3 channels, also there's a world of difference between something originally shown a year ago and something from the 1960/70's.

BBC4 is improving since being repositioned as an archive channel, instead of things from the last few years they're now showing things that are a lot older eg Play for Today, Parkinson that i've enjoyed.

Currently, the main channels are full of repeats from programmes shown just a few days ago. With catch-up tv there is really no need for this - they just don't want to make new programmes.

Going back to repeats from 30+ years ago is a different issue and many have never seen these programmes.

Looking at the schedules of Talking Pictures, That's TV and Rewind TV - U& should be able to see that there was more than just Only Fools & Horses.
