I buy my hearing aid batteries (in bulk) and tubing from HearingDirect and cheap enough not to worry about. You can get them for free but since I have to do it by post it's a pain in the backside.

I get my batteries for free, luckily the doctors surgery is a 2min walk from me for new tubes and batteries etc.

It's wotrth remembering that the zinc-air batteries work best if you remove the seal, then leave them out for a minute or two for the chemical reaction to take place. Thye last longer that way too.

Here in Leeds only designated medical outlets supply batteries ( plastic card to be used to confirm usage) linked into a NHS database recording historic info.

I had to decline to quote for some work today: Modifying some 8051 assembler code circa 1994. It's so obfuscated I can't decipher it let alone modify it for the client.

Sometimes you have to walk away.

What a crap night.

My niece's bunny was acting strange last night his head was up in the air and his mouth was open.

On the way to the vets he has in his box on my niece's lap and he died

My sister is in tears and to top things off she is is going away for the weekend.

RIP Marvin

One word cancer.

My dear friend is in in hospital and it is looking like she has a brain tumour, friends and family have noticed a difference in her personality, mood etc but we never suspected this.

Totally gutted.

This idea people seem to have these days that if someone doesn’t like you it’s because you’re “jealous” of them.

No, it could also be the fact you’re sometimes a bit of a <four lettered expletive>.

People who don't do their jobs. I've been fielding complaints from users, directed at me personally because I manage the system we use to deploy software. In this case, they have requested new software, but I can't deploy it because this person (who is the first person to throw me under the bus given half the chance) hasn't told me hasn't told me he has created a deployment for the software, tested it, or given me access to it. Unfortunately, I can't do much because he outranks me (he is on a different team, but is at the same level as my boss). He is apparently ignoring my boss.

Still, on the plus side, I am on a Health and Safety committee with him. Despite the face he is dealing with potentially dangerous equipment and I am not, I turn up to every meeting I can, and submit all my paperwork on line . He did not. Our previous Health and Safety manager never did anything about this. I don't know what happened, but at the first meeting since the new H&S manager took over, the secretary who was taking the minutes noted he had never turned up for a meeting. The H&S manager said "Thank you". He was at the next meeting, with a face like thunder, and has turned up for every one since.

The funny thing it, I don't think he is lazy. He just takes on so many responsibilities that are strictly speaking not part of his job that he doesn't have time to do his job, and he is someone that turns up at 9am and leaves dead on 5 (not saying this is a bad thing, it's not - he has every right to leave at his contracted finishing time).

<snip>

We use a product from a vendor that comprises the product and a number of frameworks the product runs on. All products are from the same vendor but are dealt with by different teams.

We have an issue with what we see in our product but is actually caused by one of the frameworks. We can't raise a ticket just to the product team, it needs to be raised with the framework team (sort of fair enough) but they then want us to do all sorts for "frameworky" stuff that we really don't have the skills to do, and anyway we bought the product, we should be able to report to the product team and they liase internally with framework folk.

Image you had a fault with a laptop and the laptop team (or you) worked out it was an issue with the power supply but instead of just sending a new PSU you had to open a new ticket with the PSU team who wanted you to do all sorts of engineering tests first.

The related issue is with updates. The product team mandate versions of the framework that can be used with versions of the product, when they update the product there maybe update with framework but do they package the lot together or even allow the installer to choose? And then our security folk say version of framework is unsafe so upgrade it but the new version of the framework isn't supported by the product.

Yesterday around 1300 the neighbours car alarm goes off, eventually someone manages to contact them and they get back from the smog around 2200, have to help them disconnect the battery. They got AA out and we slept OK. Today they needed a push back onto drive - AA now say it's an alarm fault and could keep happening.

We've offered offsite parking on "the farm" but not seriously.

A good local Thai restaurant has closed and is now a Papa John Pizza, a local Indian sold part of it's estate and is now Domino's.

Too many local independent shops and restaurants are closing and becoming chains or Turkish barbers. I never see why people prefer the muck peddled by the majority of the chains. (OK I sort of do - it's always the same, it's relatively cheap and filling. I would of thought our area would be more willing to take a chance and try new things.)

Oh the fun paying of our mortgage.

Mortgage - Natwest
Savings - Natwest
Current - Natwest.

Got a redemption statement to clear mortgage. That was the easiest bit.

Can we set up payment to move money from savings to mortgage in advance so payment just happens? Nope

Can we set up payment on day in question? Nope - bank holiday. Can't pay early as in deal and get hit with huge early payment charge.

Can we pay direct from savings account? Nope need to move to current account first.

Can we then pay using online banking - nope, amount exceeds allowed limits for transaction. So we pay off the oddments on the statement, then try to pay the remaining in chunks - nope - it's a daily limit in total.

Phone up and I get some guy who tries to add hundreds of pounds of interest to payment despite the redemption already covering interest to date ask for.

Eventually my wife gets through - first to the security team to remove the limit on transfers, then to an operator more clued in who puts through the rest of the amount.

Now checking accounts the big amount has cleared OK but the oddments are taken from current but not applied to mortgage. Another call and it's all fine.

I know the banks need to have checks and so forth but why so hard to pay off mortgage where moneys are in same bank? I'd have hoped we could simply asked them to up the Jan DD amount to take the balance, yes we'd still have to move money to current account but that bit was OK.

I had a similar problem with santander,i had retired from my job and thought i would pay off the mortgage [a year or so early] they tried to hit me with an early payement fee which doubled the amount i owed,it was clear they had no intention of letting me pay it off early without a large amount of financial pain, i decided to just carry on with the regular payements, when i paid off the mortgage the final payement should have been twenty something pounds to clear up the remaining debt but they still took a full months mortgage payement and i had to claim back my own money.

2 letters from Natwest today
First is change of interest (now on standard rate)
Second is they have received the bigger payment and we now owe the smaller amount and the new monthly rate.

They have taken our old normal amount but that was expected and they should pay back any extra moohlah!

Why do doctors prescribe antibiotics for viruses?

Because patients demand it ! ;)

Presumably the virus led to an persistent infection..

Antibiotics from my experiences do not work for viruses.

Why can't I buy Mustard Oil labelled OK for food (rather than external use only)? OK I still use it - it's same stuff.

Why can't I get a burger cooked how I want it (well when it's a properly made one not burger van stock)?

How would you want a burger coooked? Minced / grounded meat can't be cooked pink.

So I get a last (supposedly*) update to W7 pro and MS screw up the display option to stretch the wallpaper to fit the desktop. Now doesn't work.

Just confirms that my next PC will be running a Linux distro.

* Says there's more updates to install today, probably fixing their screwup.

Of course you can, it's just some legal issue stopping it but even now you can if you start with a piece of meat, cook the outside then grind and form burger, then cook burger as required. Steak tartare and similar are OK and that is even pinker.

I've even had some places not cook steak (warm steak) as I like it because "they are not allowed".

This may be the reason (found on Quora).

Just google 'gourmet burgers bacteria'. There was a lot of chain burger joints that had ecoli and salmonella in the majority of the burgers that were slightly undercooked. It's bad that people still think it's okay to eat them like that.

Dead decaying flesh is never going to be that good for you, even without the bacteria ! Stick to Linda McCartney ;)

Dry January. What a ludicrous idea! The resident alcoholic in the office does it then thinks it give him licence to get rat arsed every other day of the year. Moderate drinking all year is surely better. Just done 3 dry days, that'll more than do for me ! :)

Noo, got to do my bit for the environment and eat as many cows as possible to help reduce the methane levels. These Vegans are doing more harm than good.

Bit of a silly one, but seems to be on the increase . . watching movies and the music soundtrack almost drowns out the actors dialogue

Not that I have, but many people are spending over £600 on a nice TV and then another £200 on extras for decent audio :eh:

Signs of progress I guess

The sound quality on flat screens is generally poor. I use an AV and luckily I can increase the dialogue levels. You need at least to have a soundbar these days.

I'm looking into getting a soundbar as I struggle to hear dialogue clearly even with hearing aids.

Hard work trying to find a good not to expensive Samsung soundbar as the reviews vary so much.

One thing I am unsure about is whether other makes of soundbar can be operated with my Samsung TV remote.?

Our Sony has the option to make the headphone output into a line output and to slave that to the volume control on the remote. Have a look in the setup menues.

We use it to drive the 100W subwoofer that gives meat to the audio. My sister calls it "Cinema Sound" The mid and upper range from the TV itself are fine.

You can Bluetooth to hearing aids, if you hadn't tried that. You might need an small box which converts Bluetooth to the hearing aid loop. Save deafening anyone else in the house!

You can but the sound quality that way is generally crap and not worth the money.

Works well for.my Mrs. when listening to music/audio books (also is a bit of peace and quiet for me ! ;) ) Sound gimmicks are a bit irrelevant when you just want it to be audible.

My 4 year old iPad Pro just borked - fine last night, no power this morning, and won't charge or turn on (tried everything I could find from the interwebs and Apple Support, but no joy).

I went to my local Apple Premium Service Provider (Clockwork Creative Technology), as they could give me an appointment this morning, rather than sometime next week at the Leeds Apple Store.

It failed the HDI Integrated Current Checker Diagnostic test - can't get any power, so won't power up; can't find anywhere who fixes iPads, just screen replacement shops.

Apparently, they are so integrated in design that they are impossible to repair (except for the screens) - all Apple will do is offer a like for like replacement (same model - 2015 12.9" 128GB) for £589; I might as well buy the new model, and pay the difference.

So that's a bunch of money I wasn't planning on spending this month, but it's my main method of media consumption, so, c'est la vie - it's only money...

How was your old one running under iPadOS? I have the same model and it's running like an absolute dog: Random instances of the touch input freezing and being generally unresponsive. Haven't tried a device wipe yet but that could be the next move.

The old one worked fine under iPadOS - no problems at all.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

Grr. The local gas company have apparently found they need to upgrade the entire network.

This process involves digging up the pavement outside every house in the road, replacing both the gas mains. They chose to start this last Thursday, so they left a message stating I would need to speak to the engineer at 8am on Saturday (I usually have a lay in on Saturdays), as the Engineer needed to confirm every gas appliance we have was turned off. We only have two (the hob and boiler), so I turned them off at the time he was due to come.

He turned up at nearly 10am.. He did replace the main fairly quickly (still took an hour), and frequently left the house, so I had to leave the front door open. I needed to do this anyway as there was a strong smell of gas while he was working. It was rather cold in the house when he finished.

However, when he was finishing up, he noted that at some point in the past, someone has removed the earth bond between the consumer unit and the gas main. Don't know who, as in the last few years, both our internal gas pipes and the consumer unit have been replaced, so it could have been either the company that installed the heating or the electrician who replaced the consumer unit.

I'm expecting more bloody expense getting it fixed..

heero_yuy 11-02-2020 17:28

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

You should be able to do this yourself: The consumer unit should have a large earth terminal block on the panel. In town the braid of the incoming electric supply is bonded here. In rural areas this runs to an earth rod just outside.

An earthing clip and some 6mm yellow/green cable from the metal gas pipe to that block will do the job.

There should also be a similar cross bond to the incoming water main.

This didn't used to be needed but with both gas and water mains being replaced with plastic the metal piping, sink, bath, shower etc. all need to be cross bonded inside the house. This is an important safety issue.
