Re: Football Season 2012/2013

Quote:

Wigan owner Dave Whelan and manager Roberto Martinez have been quick to leap to the defence of Massadio Haidara's assailant Callum McManaman, claiming he is not that kind of player.

Oh really?

Taken from the match report for the Manchester City v Wigan Athletic U21 league game on March 1st, 2011:

John Guidetti scored a late winner as City's Elite Development Squad returned to winning ways against Wigan.

However, the gloss was taken off the victory when former Barcelona youngster Gai Assulin was stretchered off in the 90th-minute following a reckless tackle by Latics' Callum McManaman which led to his second yellow and resulting red card.

As yet, there is no update on Assulin, who left the pitch in a leg brace, or the extent of his injury.

Here's a reminder of what bumbling fool and SkySports News favourite blatherer, Whelan dribbled out earlier:

"The ball was there and McManaman went in for the ball and got the ball, as clean as a whistle, then followed through and they collided. He hasn't gone over the ball. That's an accident.

“When I broke my leg in the (1960 FA) cup final it was exactly the same type of tackle. We both went for the ball. It brought back memories. It ruined my career.

"I am not going to criticise Norman Deeley - these things happen in football. He came over the ball, but he didn't do it with the aim of breaking my leg."

That'll be the same Dave Whelan who told the Lancashire Telegraph in May 2010 that:

"Norman Deeley came right over the ball. Today he would have been sent off and banned for a long time. He came six inches over the ball, he came for me not the ball."
Hilarious stuff.

To see the guy still on the pitch is one thing, to then lose to a flick on handball is something else.

I refuse to blame either to be fair, Poor performance all round and I'd rather see that addressed than complain about a goal that shouldn't stand because the fact is they're never punished. I'm getting the impression that playing football with your hand is perfectly within the rules so long as the referee fails to see it, the number of incidents in the past few years is simply ridiculous.

We simply have no end product at the minute, we control the midfield and usually have the most possession but we are failing to put the ball into the net. Cisse misses so many chances before he finally does score.

Season Summary: Finish strong, get the injured lads back and concentrate on the Europa. Simple as it can be now.

The motive is to destabilise the club. It came out the same day as the North London derby and promised massive transfer budgets, being a massive European club, and cheaper ticket prices. It's Usmanov's same style all the time. Whenever Arsenal are having a bad run he pops up with a press release slating the club and promising more, or he says Henry wants him to take over, or he writes a letter to the press.

No what I mean is that when the season is still progressing and we still have games to win and points to fight for he is attempting to inhibit that to make matters worse and market himself to the fans. This is why he chooses his timing so carefully. He is working against the best interests of the club for personal gain.

I don't think Wigan are scummy. Their manager doesn't set out to get his team to 'let them know they're there' and to make borderline tackles to unsettle the opposition. They're usually clean and fair players.

I think thats a bit harsh. Personally i don't think he meant it, yes it was a definite red card but i don't think he went out to get the Newcastle player, it was accidental.

adzii_nufc 19-03-2013 18:47

Re: Football Season 2012/2013

I just don't get it. The message this sends out now is really poor... so far the reaction to it has been negative from not only Newcastle fans but others too.

OK, so Haidara's assailant cannot be charged due to the fact that the officials saw it and chose not to act. Is it not therefore fair to conclude that those officials aren't fit for purpose and should be relieved of their roles?

Lets be honest here though.. it's just getting worse and worse each season, there were many things the ref completely missed yesterday, their goal came from a handball. James Perch was lucky to be on the pitch after a dodgy tackle too. Callum McManaman punched the ball out of play after his challenge. So not only does he get away with the challenge he also gets away with the 3 pointer he tried after it.

Bale being booked for diving every other week, Suarez playing goalkeeper or scoring with his hands. How does this even happen? YOU CANNOT let something happen regardless if the ref did or didn't see it. Whilst the result may stand for a goal that's been bundled in from a deliberate handball, how can anyone sit and justify not banning the player for doing so? How do you escape serious punishment for attempting to gain a freekick/penalty via diving? Cheating is being promoted in this league and others every week because the governing body sit back and do absolutely nothing about it.

Simple solution: and note I'm not picking these players out of spite, I'm picking them as they are the most recent and talked about this year.

Gareth Bale - 3 match ban for simulation.
Suarez - 4 match ban for using his hand to create or score a goal.
Callum McManaman - 3-6 match ban depending on severity for dangerous play.

It's as simple as that, you'll quickly find less divers and basketball players.

Thing is he made no attempt to pull out of the contact, also he just walked off after, leaving the player on the turf.

Having already achieved a similar result from a like tackle before in his life, you'd think he might have learned.

Yep I am well aware of that.

I am also aware that Pardew has apologised for some tackles unlike the attempted justification of the tackle by martinez and whelan. They have no shame.

You are aware that mcmanaman has previous, aren't you?

I have to say you must have some important friends at the FA, what with the no action decision with mcmanaman and the red card rescinded for a near identical, studs up, tackle by gomez at Sunderland. ;)

Anyway I am sure things will sort themselves out before the end of the season. :)

Referee Mark Halsey receives death threat after missing Callum McManaman's horror tackle
Referee Mark Halsey has reportedly been the subject of a death threat after missing Callum McManaman's horror tackle on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara

Halsey was in charge of the match between Wigan and Newcastle on Sunday but his view was blocked when McManaman and Haidara collided.

According to the Sun, a friend of Halsey said "Mark was made aware of one particularly vile message asking for his address and claiming he deserved a death threat."

"Mark loves refereeing and is consistently one of the best in the game but after something like this he is left wondering whether it is all worth it.

"He didn't even sleep on Sunday."

Halsey was attacked on Twitter and also came under fire from former referee Graham Poll who suggested the time could be right for him to quit

Poll said: "Mark used to be one of the fittest referees in the Premier League. He's been through a tough time in his life.

I just hope Mark looks at it and thinks 'is it time? Is this a signal to go?'"

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan defended midfielder McManaman following the tackle by claiming he won the ball as “clean as a whistle”.

However Newcastle are considering legal action against Wigan Athletic as Macmanaman could yet escape retrospective punishment from the Football Association.

Middlesbrough 2012 results have been published. Comparatives for 2011 cover 18 months, as club changed accounting date last year. #Boro

#Boro 2012 loss before tax £13.5m (2011 loss £18.7m). 2012 loss after tax smaller at £10.0m (2011 loss £13.8m), thanks to tax credits.

Many large losses in Championship 11/12: Leicester £29.7m, West Ham £25.5m, Bristol City £14.4m, Cardiff £13.6m, Forest £11.6m, #Boro £10m.

#Boro 2012 revenue £18.1m down from £40.8m, due to the 18 months accounting period in 2011 & significant reduction in PL parachute payment.

#Boro '12 revenue £18.1m ('11 £40.8m): gate £4.8m ('11 £6.8m), cup £0.8m (’11 £0.2m), media £7.4m (‘11 £26.1m), commercial £5.1m (‘11 £7.7m)

#Boro 2012 profit on player sales much reduced at £2.8m (2011 £15.2m including sales of Adam Johnson, Brad Jones & David Wheater).

#Boro 2012 staff costs £21.5m, giving very high wages to turnover ratio of 119%.

High wages to turnover ratios not unusual in Championship, e.g. Bristol City 157%, Leicester 130%, #Boro 119%, Forest 119%, Cardiff 103%.

#Boro 2012 gross debt of £70m - owed to Steve Gibson (interest-free). During year, all external debt was repaid & replaced with owner loans.

#Boro 2012 results – in addition to replacing external debt, £50m of inter-company debt was converted into equity during 2012.

FIFA 2012 accounts: revenue $1.166bn (2011 $1.077bn), expenses $1.077bn (2011 $1.034bn), surplus $89m (2011 $36m).

FIFA 2012 accounts: reserves up to $1.378bn. Described as necessary as “virtually impossible to find cancellation insurance for World Cup”.

FIFA 2012 accounts: main revenue elements are TV rights $566m (2011 $550m) and marketing rights $370m (2011 $381m).

FIFA 2012 accounts: main expenses are events-related $569m, operating expenses $188m, development $177m and governance $53m.

So FIFA once again spent more on itself (operating expenses $188m + governance $53m = $241m) than development $177m.

FIFA 2012 accounts: governance included $32m on committees & congress (i.e. meetings) plus $21m on legal matters.

FIFA 2012 a/c: personnel costs up from $89m to $91m (key management up from $29.5m to $33.5m), while development down from $183m to $177m.

FIFA's reserves have grown from $76m in 2003 to an astonishing $1.4bn in 2012 - that's an increase of over 1700%.

#BHAFC 2012 detailed results have been published: loss after tax of £9.1m (2011 loss £6.8m).
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...3/18.jpg:large

Many larger losses in Champ'ship 11/12: Leicester £29.7m, West Ham £25.5m, Bristol City £14.4m, Cardiff £13.6m, Forest £11.6m, #BHAFC £9.1m.

#BHAFC 2012 revenue £22.2m up from £7.5m in 2011. reflecting promotion to Championship from League One.

#BHAFC 2012 revenue £22.2m (2011 £7.5m): ticketing £7.9m (2011 £2.3m), TV £5.7m (2011 £1.6m), commercial £8.6m (2011 £3.6m).

#BHAFC 2012 commercial £8.6m (‘11 £3.6m): sponsorship £3.9m (£2.0m), retail £2.0m (£0.5m), catering £1.3m (£0.0m), 1901 club £0.0m (£1.1m).

#BHAFC 2012 accounts: 2011 comparatives restated, so revenue £0.4m higher, other op income £0.5m lower, expenses £0.1m lower. No net impact.

#BHAFC 2012 staff costs doubled to £14.7m (2011 £7.2m), but wages to turnover ratio down from 95% to 67%.

#BHAFC 67% wages to turnover ratio lower than many in Championship: Bristol City 157%, Leicester 130%, #Boro 119%, Forest 119%, Cardiff 103%

#BHAFC 2012 other costs more than doubled from £7.5m to £16.9m, due to “costs of running a state of the art stadium”.

#BHAFC 2012 gross debt of £120.5m (2011 £95.0m) – owed to Tony Bloom (unsecured & interest-free). Less £10.2m cash gives net debt £110.3m.

#BHAFC Including £18m capital injected in 2009, Tony Bloom has put nearly £140m into the club. Since year-end £40m converted into capital.

#BHAFC Amex stadium cost £103m & expansion will cost £15m. New training ground will cost £22m (per 2011 a/c), so total commitment of £140m.

West Ham are on the brink of sealing a £14million deal for Ivory Coast powerhouse Wilfried Bony.

His arrival means that the club are unlikely to take up a £15m option to sign Andy Carroll.

Liverpool have been alerted to England Under-19 forward Robert Hall’s contract stand-off with West Ham, exclusive by Matt Law. The Reds, Fulham and Southampton are all chasing Hall, who could be available for as little as £500,000 at the end of the season. Hall is one of the brightest prospects in the country and has shone on loan at Birmingham. His current West Ham contract is due to expire in the summer and, unless he signs a new deal, the 19-year-old will only cost a compensation fee.

Jovetic is Gunning for glory

“I’ve heard about Arsenal’s interest. It’s a big pleasure for me to be on the radar of such a big club. I am happy about that. I’ve always had an affinity with Arsenal. It’s a major club with a big tradition, one of the biggest in Europe. It’s not easy to replace Van Persie, who scored a lot of goals. Arsenal have plenty of players who don’t score like Van Persie, but are also very good. They are still very strong. I often watch Premier League games on TV. It’s one of the best leagues in the world and looks tempting for me. Maybe one day I will play there but I have a contract with Fiorentina and battling for a Champions League place in Serie A is the only thing I’m thinking about now.”
