Thanks :)

I've downloaded it now and will test it out. I'll post up my results in a bit

Not conducted: You must register this software in order to perform this test.
Please click 'What's This?' for information on registering this software to enable this test.

Test 12: Packet loss en route to a UK server
Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)
plig.net: 0 %
gnu.teleglobe.net: 36 %
An unacceptable level of packet loss has been detected which should be investigated.

Test 13: Packet loss en route to a European server
Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)
uni-kl.de: 0 %
sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch: 2 %
A small amount of packet loss has been detected. This should be investigated.

Test 14: Packet loss en route to an east-coast USA server
Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)
nyi.net: 0 %
dc.aleron.net: 0 %
The results of this test indicate no problems.

End of testing.

I'm a bit worried by these packet losses but in truth I don't know a lot about the real ins and outs of a connection. Can anyone shed some light please? Is all on here looking good or not?

Just reset my modem.

500 KB/s down 45 KB/s up. Brilliant!

Out of curiosity, why would anyone want 10MB instead of 4MB?

Just like why someone would want 30mb instead of 10mb. It's faster. :)

Code:

1st 512K took 435 ms = 1177 KB/sec, approx 9698 Kbps, 9.47 Mbps
2nd 512K took 434 ms = 1179.7 KB/sec, approx 9721 Kbps, 9.49 Mbps
3rd 512K took 430 ms = 1190.7 KB/sec, approx 9811 Kbps, 9.58 Mbps
4th 512K took 433 ms = 1182.4 KB/sec, approx 9743 Kbps, 9.51 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9743 Kbps, 9.51 Mbps

Out of curiosty what area of manchester are you in? If I got anywhere near those speeds I never would have switched down from 10meg.

I'm in Fallowfield and right where there is a huge student population. I'm failry sure that the huge influx of NTL installations in my area, are responsible for my crappy speeds (contention - depsite NTL claiming that isn't the case). But I have made another post asking a question that may be related.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Im waiting till the whole 4mb roll out is done and settled down for a month or so. I might then contemplate upgrading to the 10mb service - im told my area is pretty low for NTL customers so I should get a decent connection.

As you say the result for packet loss doesn't look good, everything else is fairly ok, it would seem.

For now I would suggest running the test at a few different times of day, to see if any pattern emerges. If you consistently get bad packet loss all the time, then it may be worth looking a bit deeper at stuff like MTU settings, but I'd try the diagnostics for a little longer, first, if I was you :)

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Thanks I'll do that before I investigate anything.

The thing is I really wouldn't have any clue about packet loss and looking myself at any reasons for it. I'll have to rely on someone on here helping me with that because I know one thing...I refuse to pay NTL by calling their new customer support lines only to be fobbed off and talked to like I've never used a computer in my life.

Yes, I know you'll score better on a speed test, but is there any practical reason why 10mb is better than 4mb? That alone cant justify the extra cost.

Yes, the hassle of downgrading. If you're on it that is :)

But seriously, you only have 10mb if you tend to use it to download whatever, and if you are someone that downloads then it's hard to downgrade to such a slow speed such as 4mb. Like going back to 56k

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I don't game but I require a high speed connection for academia. 2MB is great and I am looking forward to the upgrade to 4MB. The extra 6MB does not justify paying an extra 10 pounds, for my requirements.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Someone over at Neowin has reported phoning up NTL today and asking to be upgraded to 4mbit as all his mates have been.

Quote:

Anyone wanting a fast upgrade immediately just phone up the BBteam at NTL and ask to have your 2mb to 4MB "activated" - I just did this saying my mates lines have gone to 4mb and the guy said no more other than "it's done for you right now"

Just had to reboot modem :p
