Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

ah the good old days. I started off with a Terayon TJ210 when I was on 512k and kept it all the way up to 10mbits. I had to switch to an Ambit 255 (or maybe 256) when 20mbit came out because the Terayon couldn't handle it and then it was the vmng300 when 50mbit got released.

My modem history I'm a little fuzzy on as I was quite young at the time, but it started as 128k on what I believe was an Ambit 100? It looked identical to the 120 but I don't think that was around at the time. For one reason or another, we switched to DSL at 512k (or 576kbps as it was listed), which went to 1Mbit and then 2Mbit.

Eventually after moving to England, I went from 10mbit to 20mbit using an SA2100. After that, it was 50meg and the Ambit 300 which lasted years (2 house moves) until I moved and took an SH2 instead as part of the install.

All in all, can't complain, never had many issues.

Given you skipped the 'a' in Terayon evidently ;)

Me neither and that is how i like to keep things. That is why i threw a wobbly when they forced a shub1 on me when i upgraded to 100mbits; you are only asking for trouble.

I think Technology in general is a bit like that, it takes time to mature and get to a point where people are confident with it.

I had a customer complain once because they were using USB to connect to a modem and of course it was slow, but when I tried to convince them to try ethernet they stamped their feet and refused, saying that it was too complicated and USB was simpler.

I upped my package today from 30MB to 152MB.

When I got home, I restarted everything, then downloaded something to check. At first it was 66Mbps. Then after about 2 minutes, it dropped to 35Mbps and has stayed there for the last 2 hours.

Is this the peak time management?

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

no because there is no peak time management anymore. Have you checked your config to make sure you are provisioned for 152? Forget "downloading" something for now, if you have been provisioned for 152mbits you should be able to see on a speed test on the VM servers on speedtest.net

My Virgin Media login says I'm on the "152 package"

Not sure what you mean by config?

After a restart:

Better thanks! Although still an odd speed really. I've not had to restart the router / superhub in about 2 or 3 months before now.

well you are getting 12 up which means you are on 120mbits as a minimum. When I say config I mean this. When you go to 192.168.100.1 click on router status top right

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

I'm in modem mode. So I don't have router status.

I can get 90Mb/s direct into router through a laptop. So I guess that's near acceptable. Unfortunately my home network is not great.

My PC upstairs is powerlined through a 500mb homeplug. It has now gone back to 30MBs again.

Looks like I am going to have to reset everything quite often, as moving the router is difficult.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

everyone has router status which is why I gave you the ip for modem mode and not router mode (192.168.0.1). I use modem mode as well. The fact that you can get a faster speed through a laptop shows that your powerlines are defo the issue so the question you have got to ask yourself now what you are going to do about it because speeds are only going to get faster.

I won't bore you with the details but I have run cables under the carpet to various switches around the house including going out the wall and downstairs next to where the coax for the Sky comes in etc, that way everything can be wired (NAS, TVs, Blurays, Sky etc) and don't have to worry about wireless and things like homeplugs being limiting factors.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

Thanks. Must spread. It seems a big shame not to use the full speed. But a few months back, if you remember, I set up a bridge with an old router upstairs so I had full wireless coverage in the house.

If I move the router to the pc, then I wouldn't be able to move the old router downstairs.

It seems I either have good wireless coverage and average speeds; or average wireless coverage and top notch speed on my main pc.

When i am in modem mode for the SH1, my ip is (192.168.100.1). can only get the other IP address when in router mode

General Maximus 08-05-2014 08:39

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014

that id the point. When you are in modem mode it is 192.168.100.1 and in router mode it is 192.168.0.1
