If you are paying a premium news provider what do ntl care, you aren't paying them? Even if you use ntl's servers they are free servers, just a value add rather than a core part of the product.

In any event they've already said it'll be an upstream only cap.

Also obviously if you're hammering the network downloading TB of news a month I imagine they'd want a chat even with an uncapped product. The old T+Cs about network degredation will still be present.

---------- Post added at 11:13 ---------- Previous post was at 11:07 ----------

Mmm neither of those are really accurate.

In this context traffic shaping is about your ISP using hardware that identifies your type of traffic and throttles down certain types of traffic based on a profile.

It basically means that they can control how much bandwidth P2P, news, web, etc, can use on their network rather than just being able to control how much bandwidth there is in total.

The wiki article covers traffic shaping to remove jitter, and QoS is about identifying and prioritising traffic based on source / destination rather than doing packet inspection on it. ntl can certainly do that as well, tagging traffic from business users for expedited forwarding and cable modems as best effort for example. Easily enough done.

I was told this by retentions and i also phone CS and asked what was on my account this they also confirmed that the discounts would be add every 3 months.

As ntl have stated that it will only affect upstream I'd say the only people who are liable to have issues are those who have ratios they really want to keep up. No, encrypting torrents using the current software won't help, the current versions of uTorrent, Azureus et al that offer encryption are already detectable and shapeable. No it doesn't cost ISPs any more, the software updates will be covered by the support contracts. Will ntl be sorry to see torrent monsters go? Nope.

Seems like relatively mild and not uncommon shaping to be honest, most cable ISPs shape upstream only as it's their 'weak link'.

I may be in the minority here but why dont they see a need to shape downstream? I think it may be beneficial 6pm to 12pm. If someone has poor speeds no matter what then at least getting fast speeds on http is better then nothing and allowing the gamers to enjoy their games.

that is true, but i do pay them for the internet access - its not my fault they cannot provide a decent newsgroup service. To traffic shape be it good for the all to the majority means your buying something but not actually getting it, abit like say you have the base pack tv yet its in black&white between X&Y hours. Yet becasue its something that the majority won't notice as they just use their 10meg connections for web browsing, online shopping, e-mails then NTL get away with offering you a lesser service that what you paid for.

i don't download much anyway certainly less than the 75gig 10meg cap that was supposed to be in place, i just want what i pay for so will wait and see what effect traffic shaping has on me personally before i decide to up roots and take my BB,Phone and TV subscriptions elsewhere

Hi, this is good news, but what i would like to know is. Ive seen it some where here that the silver box.. smt 2100c can not take more than 2mg? if this is true.Does this mean that i will have to get a modem .:dozey: & will i have to pay for it?

LOL, i wonder what the upload rate for them would be
probably upto a full 600kbit and perhaps a whole 720kbit/s
for the 100mbit/s download.

it would be nice if one day we could have the ability to
upload at the same rate as download, just inside the whole
NTL network would be a great thing, not asking for the whole web and perhaps some webspace with PHP/rebol serverside capability would be very nice too.

[Edit]-From what I can see 2Mb customers are being upgraded to 4Mb (unlimited usage), & 4Mb customers are being upgraded to 10Mb also with unlimited usage.

It also says the following:

So they are uncapping the 4 & 10 meg services.

That just confirms to me that traffic shaping is imminent, as there is no way that ntl are suddenly going to reverse the cap they have had in place for 3 years. :nono:

it would seem that these download increases would help
NTL in respect of introducing VOD and nearVOD, presumably
the upload speeds 200kbit ?(thought it was 256kbit now)are to help prevent potential stalls in the pings etc, i do wonder though will NTL also introduce Multicasting across the whole NTL network and in doing so give the end-users the ability to
for instance multicast a webcam/etc to other NTL users inside the network (i wouldn't expect them to route multicast outside NTL), if so that might be considered inovative for a retail UK ISP.

the combined multicasting/P2P they were hinting at for Near/VOD to the NTL users would save them a lot of internal traffic it would seem.

any news on the upstream... ? hope it goes beter if ntl went 10 / 1 unlimited they are looking at thousands and thousands of very happy customers :D

i asked that 1 mbit+ upload question once, and the answer was that the NTL
network couldn't do more than 1.5/2 mbit/s or so max, so 1mbit/s upload would seem possible but unlikely, still if it did go to that 1mbit/s then that one thing could get them a lot of new users from the other companys and they could rightly so, claim it as an inovation for a UK retail ISP...

it would be nice to be able to recomend NTL internet once again to my friends and so on.

(arr i hate this appending in this messageboard software, these should be seperate, is there a way to do that ?)

you should care, if your upload speed gets swamped then it
effects your download rates massively.

keeping in mind the new PS3 for instance, it will make far greater demands on your upload rates while your video serving your webcam and doing some realtime chatting.

that would be 512kbit/s (i thought your getting 600kbit/s ATM though?)going to 1 mbit/s but still, if thats the case i may consider going to that and telling friends etc to do the same or come over to NTL even, we shall see i guess.

hmmmm

LOL Yea, i do wonder though, would that be possible between
just the NTL users and the whole ntl network ?.

one thing i think could be done with any new commissioned kit STB/CM/etc is to include a mobile/WiMax or even the new 11N chipset with Mesh networking included, then a whole new private/wireless network could be built up over time and be used as a base for a multicasting/P2P distribution for both the
users and the core NTL Near/VOD for instance.

i wish all the new HD freeview boxs did the same, now that would be a real UK inovation......

With 700k upload you could easily run your own web server.

I Already run my own webserver with 200k upload, albeit a little slow, but it does work.

www.abyssunderground.co.uk is the site if you want to see. (Its limited to 10KB/s so it doesnt saturate my upload and stop me from browsing).

Sorry to rain on everyones parade, but a little birdy gave me an insight to the future, dont know whether its true, but normally they are pretty accurate

They said everyone will have 10meg, as standard speed, what you will pay for is the amount of data you use. The kit is already installed and configured.

Watch this space, and me in my "I told you so" teeshirt :)

Trust NTL to screw up what on paper looked like a good deal.
But then most of us have been here before, and been bitten in the @ss.

Somehow I don't believe they are going to carry on offering 10mb where there is capability to offer more then what ADSL2+ is.

I don't know whether its correct or will be the case next year but I've heard 10mbit quoted.
