Is that because the sentences are far more severe and the system far more rigorous for the accused and those found guilty? If you know you're going down for 20-30 years (and won't be serving just a fraction of that) as would happen here) there's a huge incentive to do a deal in return for a lesser sentence or even immunity from prosecution. You get let off, the bad guys get done and there's plenty of kudos to be shared around those responsible for the prosecution, many if whom are elected IIRC and rely on being seen to be getting results.

It's all a bit vague but I recall reading, in connection with the case of a UK citizen put on trial in the states some years ago, that the US prosecutors throw everything possible at those in the dock to raise the stakes and rely on the likelihood that the accused will decide to accept some guilt rather than risk arguing their innocence and getting a massive sentence. The pressure to do this is far greater, apparently, than in the UK system.

It's my impression as well that politics is never far away from the justice system in America. Especially at the federal level. I think it's even the case that local police chiefs and prosectors are elected as you mentioned. Bit dodgy imo.

The BBC can reveal that the former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner has been investigated by US prosecutors over the disappearance of money meant for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

He visited the country in 2010 and raised $750,000 from FIFA and the Korean Football Association to help rebuild the country after the disaster.

Russia & Qatar 'may have bought votes'

Russia and Qatar may have had to pay bribes to secure their World Cups, Sepp Blatter's former special advisor has suggested.

Guido Tognoni worked "extremely closely" with the Fifa president during Blatter's second term.

"In Fifa, for many years, you could only reach your goal by taking dollars in your hands," Tognoni told BBC Sport.
The revelations are coming out more and more as the days roll by.

In the meantime, with impeccable timing, a FIFA backed film that seems to present a very rose-tinted view of FIFA's own history has come out, and flopped.

I doubt any of the shenanigans will be in the "official" books. It all depends on what data the police have been "allowed" to see.

Had they swooped and taken away all the computers for forensic examination including the deleted files* it would be a different story IMO.

*PC's don't actually delete stuff, the OS just marks the space as available storage.

Half expect the Argentines implicated to try raising the Falklands as a distraction and blame it on some British plot.
