Our Trades Unions also tend to be pro-Europe, pro-Euro and basically pro-anything that comes out of Brussels and is a perceived advantage to their cause (such as the working time directive). But when Europe turns round and bites them on the bum, they're the first to start moaning. I presume they understand that barring Italians from taking contracts in the UK would require the UK to derogate from huge chunks of its commitment to the EU?

In any case, isn't a lot of what's going on today perilously close to secondary action, which is illegal?

SO if your job was tendered out to Spanish or Italians you'd sit back and do nothing??

Even before the recession it was very high.

The country is immaterial. My point was if you tell these companies is do as you say, give British workers the jobs, and restrict them, why would they want to set up here?

Jobs will be lost if you impose these kind of rules on companies? The recent strikes send a message to Total, and why would they want to set up more of their company here if this is what happens?

well the British work longer hours -dont have 3 hours for lunch and come back drunk -and we make a substantial profit for total -we also don't go on strike as often as the French and we prefer dialogue as opposed to burning every thing in sight and throwing bricks at police men. we know what side were on and don't sit on the fence in the middle getting splinters in our bums;)[ punctuation in the post]

We have to protect jobs, for the sakes of the families, there will be more and more people being laid off becuase of this, don't forget major companies make money out of us, but they are using foriegn workers to produce it, BRITISH JOBS FOR BRITISH WORKERS.

arthur your life would be at risk if you did that in France

This isn't about 'permanent' jobs, it is about contractors, permanent jobs don't usually get "tendered out".

My question remains as before, why did the companies tendering for the contract, who might have employed an UK workforce, not get awarded the job in favour of an Italian company with an existing complement of workers?

I still maintain the problem is probably more to do with the UK 'package' being uncompetitive - in my opinion we should be directing more effort to redress that balance, rather than complaining 'it isn't fair' ?????

Remember 'Auf Wiedersen Pet'? - loads of UK construction workers going to Germany wasn't a problem, then, when they had a skills shortage.

In my opinion we should be protesting about the bigger picture of the lack of vocational training opportunities, which is keeping us uncompetitive, rather than concentrating on just one contract ????

Re: Watch your job

This government does a lot of talking about skill's and training and has not backed it up at all and we let them get away with it. While i know some believe life on benefit is a dream it isn't and 99% on it would happily retrain to get the skill's to get jobs and have long term job prospects what is stopping them simple there are no adequately funded ways for unemployed people to obtain the skill's at a level that would help our shortage and their long term needs.

Trainng schemes for the unemployed are largely lousy and don't lead to more then nvq level 2 for most on benefit in areas where there are already plenty of people to do the job. What we need is to clearly identify the area's where we have a shortfall in skill's and then setup regional centre's equipped and capable of training people on benefit to adequate standards to fill those gaps. Do that and you will see a massive interest from benefit claimants to take those courses.

While we have a government that talks and does nothing were going to have the same problems again and again and nothing will ever change and i don't think this government has any real interest in changing things in this regard it is far easier to talk tough on benefit talk down to the people on it and give them no real help while all the time talking as if the help is there and not being taken up.

You have completely missed the point of the protests, you and the government it seems, what with the Dark Lord Mandy telling them to look for work in Europe, the point is that British workers have been excluded from applying for the positions, not that workers from abroad have been taken on. Oh and does Mandy think any other country would stand for an entire workforce to be shipped in, of course they wouldn't, it's completely different to one person working abroad and competing on an equal footing with local workers.

Well, where the excluded? In this case I thought they put out a tender and the company which won used their own workers and happened to be Italian.

Re: Watch your job

The point that l am trying to make is this, In this country, we are standing up for our rights, We have foriegn companies in this country, that have British workers, some of these workers are now being laid off, due to the recession, We have a PM who does not give a hoots, to the British worker, even though he came out with the slogan ' British work for British workers ' which he has now back tracked, we now have Mandy, coming out with the same old crap. The bottom line is, that foriegn workers ARE taking British jobs, And with the recession biting very hard, have decided enough is enough.

There is probably Lorry loads of foreign workers coming through the channel tunnel, ready to take the work tomorrow. I support any striker, who supports the right to work. and this the right for every worker who holds a British passport. The worst thing, this country done, was get rid of the Trade Unions that we know of years ago, as at the moment there isn't anyone, with enough bottle to stand up to his stupid government, which has cuased the problem in the first place.
