Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

I noted people saying about the size of headers eating into your downloads, heres a trick to save headers (and time) - look on www.newzbin.com for whats new on the binaries, then use a newsreader with a search to look for the files you want (even grabit has a search now), then you dont need headers, i believe www.newzbin.com also runs some kind of auto-header import type thing (i havent looked at this though). Using various ideas there is no reason to grab the headers anymore.

It looks like the fault has been "fixed" then immediatly included as part of another fault though. The binaries have allegedly been fixed twice now and now there is a "new" mention to a fault - Is this honest, or their way of not fixing it properly?

i'l check when I get back but I guess what NTL mean is that you can access newsgroups so the problem is fixed.. not that they have restored the binaries and all missing posts from 19..

having said that i'm willing to give them a chance and see what i get.. remember there are multiple servers and they could be synching at the moment.. Try doing a reset on the group and seeing if you can import all the headers again

Just been looking at binary updates - take for example an mp3 album, it seems most smaller files make it (.nfo, covers, etc), but only 1 of the larger files (.mp3) make it, the rest of the album is missing,

Well, as long as NTL says news groups don't work, I guess they know better, then me :)

Way ahead of you :), tried several servers, all with full updates, not just incremental updates - nothing new ATM. Personally Im not so bothered about getting the 19th-24th thats missing, just want it fixed so we get all files again.

I agree with every word.

Newsgroups moved from Winersh to Guildford.
Mail and homepages still in Winersh.

192.222.x.x range = Guildord
62.253.x.x range = Winersh

Sounds like mail and homepages are probably moving there too, perhaps thats been the cause of the issues, maybe itll all settle down now (if we are lucky)

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

just spent £5.51 (10 bucks) to test out the astraweb usenet server to circumvent the current NTL issue. Seems a good idea to have 25gb download capacity on standby whilst NTL find the usenet Haynes manuals. !

The download from Astra is pretty good at the moment, getting a steady 750kbps. So right now I consider it a good mini-investment !!!!

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

No news so far.
I will join astra next week if NTL doesn't repair the current fault.
I think there is unlimited with 600kbps speed for 10$, it would perfectly suit me.

what is the retention like on these servers.. if I sign up can I get downloads from last sunday ?

nice to know we have to spend more money because NTL can't sort their servers out

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

I find it reducilous, they post that they repaired everything except e-mail service. But newsgroups do not work!!!
Why cannot they post the truth?

Yeah Astraweb isn't too bad at all, ive been paying £8 / $15 per month for the unlimited DSL package, no cap and i get around 180k/s with 4 connections running.

The bonus is the a.b.dvd groups and a.b.x / ftn that NTL don't cater for.
