these forums are rapidly losing post quality, loads of threads seem to go off topic all the time.

its kinda hard to work out whats going on some times, and btw dont start saying about 50meg you will confuse people :D

For existing customers it doesn't matter, as we're getting a "free" upgrade from the 2mb service. But if you're a new customer and sign a contract for a 4mb service today and ntl can't actually provide 4mb or "up to" it, then that's a diffrent matter, isn't it?

Ntl have covered themselves by saying up to 4mb, for instance even 1mb speed qualifies as up to 4mb.
Its not ideal though to be too far under a stated speed, unless there are very good reasons

I have to disagree with the "up to" statement. If you go by this idea then when they finally get people onto 4 meg the can advertise 6 meg on their website to get punters in... this is fundamentally wrong... if they cannot provide the service NOW then they should not advertise it. In terms of upgrades, yes, that's fine, but they are telling NEW punters 4meg is available now and it is not... I hope they get in trouble for this!

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Basically, NTL have cottoned onto the DSL 'up to' idea, which with DSL is due to network limitations such as distance from exchange. On cable, however, it's due to overloading.

It'd be interesting to do a survey of 10Mb subscribers and see how many regularly get that kind of service, 'cause it's becoming an absolute joke.

Its called clever wording. They can't get in trouble as it clearly states you will recieve a speed upto 4mb. It all depends on when your online, what equipment your running etc.. Theres no way they can offer a rock solid 4mb to all customers.

If you wanna hark on about 'not fair', it would be more unfair of NTL to offer a 'rock solid' 4mb service. They simply cannot.

I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. If they advertised the 1 Mbs service as 'up to 4mbs' the OFT would take them to the cleaners, and anyone who signed up would have no problem getting the local County Court to order a full refund.

I'm wishing I'd never typed that midnight post now - was a single wink not enough?

That would be all very well if they were actually advertising thier 1mb service as 'upto 4mb' - thing is they arnt... so your point is?

The thing people need to remember is those eligable ARE getting a 4mb upgrade at somepoint in June - no-one is telling lies or bending the truth. Granted the CS teams should be dealing with enquiries a little more tactfully, but we all know what NTL's CS is like.

Like anything in progress it can take time. The upgrades are taking place, just be patient.

I dare say some of you are gonna bugger up your mains switches re-booting your modems every 15 mins at this rate.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Ok maybe my "up to 50 meg" comment was a bit over the top. But surely something should be in place to make sure there is a minimum service that should be provided? I don't think expecting 50-60% of the advertised speed is too much to ask? but I didn't even get that. I was getting "up to 4 megs" which is the next tier down speed wise now. Isn't that when it DOES become false advertising?

It's all well and good saying lifes a bitch. But why should someone paying for a 10 meg service only get around 2 meg while someone in another city gets the full whack of 10 meg?

That's not life being a bitch. That's NTL not having a decent infrastructure in place and so provide whatever crappy speeds they can get away with - safe in the knowledge that it's advertised as "up to". Not good enough I'm afraid.

They should be wanting to provide me with 10megs and keep my £35. NOT, be happy for me to downgrade and instead get £25 off me.

I may well do that, though it's not sensible to do it on here seeing as the people on here are more likely to be the ones with definite problems ;)

Maybe I'll set one up somewhere else and promote it 'far and wide'. Then, with some proper organisation, we might end up with some half-decent bargaining power.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Poor NTL. I think they have made a big mistake by announcing the upgrade. Most users never see "until the end of June", they see only June, period.
Then again, a customoer support call is not 0845 anymore but costs 10 p/min, so they will make money on it ::)

Tell yah what ... instead of venting your grief at me call up NTL and cancel! Its quite clear that you understand the issues that NTL are having with the 10MB service, so why the hell are you still paying for it?

My quote about 'life being a bitch' was in refference to the way NTL advertise thier services, it had NOTHING to do with the 10mb service.

Let get one thing straight; they cant call it "up to 4mb" when not a single person ever sees above 2mb.. There is a physical limit on 2mb, end of.

Yes, existing customer cant complain, but new customer sign up to "up to" 4mb, so they expect to see above 2mb off peak (or whatever).. Personally I upgraded from 1mb to 4mb when it was advertised on their website, and expect up-to 4mb, she even told me YES, i would get 4mb, "I will upload the 4mb file to your modem, not the 2mb file"..

I agree it will come when its ready, but they really shouldnt advertise up-to 4mb when you obviously cant get it.

that's not the point - all 4meg users must be able to experience 4meg at some point during the day - even if it's 3am. as far as I can see 'upto' means when the network is stressed you get less otherwise you get close to 4meg.

Erm, you might like to try reading the post I quoted, and the exchange of posts just before. ;)

Those of us already on 2Mbs have no cause to complain about NTL if they advertise 'up to 4Mbs' on their ad becuase we're already getting what we contracted for - up to 2Mbs. However, a new customer who takes out a contract with NTL based on an ad stating 'up to 4Mbs' would have a case against NTL if - as is the case - there was no chance of them getting any more than half of what they bargained for.

'Up to' is not synonymous with 'less then'

My point exactly! At the moment NOBODY on 4mb gets over 2mb, its not physically possible with the limits in place.. They should stop adverting it until they make it available.

that is a good point - I think they have done it like this to avoid customers 'jumping the gun' on the upgrade roll-out, via an online link, which was possible during the 3-10 meg upgrade, IIRC.

- but as you say, the downside, is the effect on new customers possibly, in the short term, at least, being potentially miss-sold??? Interesting :)

My quote about 'life being a bitch' was in refference to the way NTL advertise thier services, it had NOTHING to do with the 10mb service.

Because I'd like to think that maybe, just maybe, NTL would prefer to offer a service approaching something remotely like they advertise rather than see people like me jumping ship.

But it's like my gas and electricity provider, always someone around the corner that seems better or cheaper, but may not be the be all and end all. Until I do some research and find out who else may be a better alternative for me, I'll stick this out for now so that I am not bitten on the ass again, like NTL have done with me. I have made that mistake once by trusting NTL would give me what they promise.

And I wasn't aiming my frustrations at you per se. But you seem determined to defend NTL, when clearly there is a problem with their service. Even if it does affect what might be a minority, but that minority are getting shockingly bad service in some cases.

I can only assume you are one of the lucky ones getting something close to what you pay for. Otherwise your loyalty toward them is staggering - or do you simply have money to throw away on a poor service?

I have a few friends who have signed up for the Carphone Warehouse deal with free broadband. Some here may scoff at that and as some have said in the past, "ADSL doens't offer the speeds that cable can" - "good luck with getting 10 meg on ADSL" etc etc. But if I even get 5 meg from an ADSL company, it's far better than NTL ever have been able to provide me with.

But as I say, before I sign up for 12 months with someone, I will damn well make sure I get all the facts laid out in front of me before blindly signing up with a company based solely on whatever the speeds may or may not be "up to".

Meantime, I don't see what's wrong with coming here and hopefully expressing problems with a service that might help even one person out there from signing on the dotted line with this company, only to maybe, be hugely disappointed.

If everybody had your attitude, then companies delivering a naff service would never get their collective fingers out and improve anything. Whether you like it or not, when a company sells its customers short, then people need to speak up and make themselves heard. And of course I have spoken to NTL. I mentioned that already, and I got the usual "you must have a virus/running P2P software/router/the cat is sat too near the p.c/global warming/your hair is too long/next doors microwave oven is affecting your speeds, it's anything BUT us to blame" excuse.

Serioulsy, it would have been so much more easier to have put it on the tier migration page so everyone could have done it in their own time? And as far as network testing goes, they should have done that beforehand to make sure that areas could support 4 meg.

I remeber giong 2 Meg from 750 k free through tier migration tool. Only took 2 secs. Anyone could have done it.

Yeah but it already says Im on 4 Meg when I'm clearly downloading at 245kBps and my config file says 2048000/20000 so thats incorrect.

You are currently on our Unlimited 4Mb Broadband service - free premium entertainment at super-fast speed at £24.99 per month.

Not quite, I disagree. The "up to" statement is used for ADSL because of line length and when someone does the adsl checker they get an estimated max speed, for instance my postcode gives me adsl upto 4.5mbps. So in that case BT arent saying I will get up to 8mbit.

Sweden and other countries manage to sell 10mbit+ connections that dont see contention any time of the day and some of their services are uncapped, so I dont want to hear ntl cannot do it, do you think they could do it if their network was upgraded in line with the bandwidth they sold? do you think their network capacity is 10 times higher then when 1mbit was the max tier? do you think they have 10 times the # of proxy servers? no.

Other ways they could have done it is proper peak time capping but it seems they could never get their capping equipment working correctly so was unable to do this.

Other EU countries are sending TV over ADSL2 lines, presumably for this to work they cant allow contention to poke its nose else the tv would have problems.

Broadband is a joke in the UK (not just ntl) and the only providers I see that are anything like what broadband should be is 2 or 3 LLU providers, even with them I would like them to use boosters so adsl works faster at longer distances.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

If you're on 10meg and only getting up to 5meg or less consistantly the obvious solution is to downgrade to 4meg and save some cash. Hitting NTL where it hurts (in the pocket) is far more likely to succeed than complaining about it.
Not that I'm saying you shouldn't complain, but if all avenues have been gone down and you're still not getting full speeds regularly that it seems the obvious answer.

5.50am so much for 2pm-3pm yesterday, why is it there so incapable of doing this?? every time..

Code:

Sat, 03 Jun 2006 04:50:24 GMT

1st 512K took 2218 ms = 230.8 KB/sec, approx 1902 Kbps, 1.86 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2110 ms = 242.7 KB/sec, approx 2000 Kbps, 1.95 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2187 ms = 234.1 KB/sec, approx 1929 Kbps, 1.88 Mbps
4th 512K took 2188 ms = 234 KB/sec, approx 1928 Kbps, 1.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1940 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps

That's not really accurate, BBB.se customers can see contention and do see contention especially to international destinations. BBB is ethernet to the home as well so not really a fair comparison to cable.

Other EU countries are sending TV over ADSL2 lines, presumably for this to work they cant allow contention to poke its nose else the tv would have problems.
Nope not true the bandwidth on ADSL between customer and exchange is guaranteed so no danger of contention there, and the bandwidth the TV travels to the exchange over is 'nailed up' so however congested the internet traffic gets the TV will be fine. Google QoS, CoS and most relevant for ADSL CBR (Constant Bit Rate) and PVC (Permanent Virtual Circuit).

Broadband is a joke in the UK (not just ntl) and the only providers I see that are anything like what broadband should be is 2 or 3 LLU providers, even with them I would like them to use boosters so adsl works faster at longer distances.
We aren't too bad, price for not being as socialist as other places in Europe. Most here are better off than most of the USA.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I have a serious question for anyone with the know how. Some here are "laughing" at people expecting the speeds to all have been switched exactly on the 1st June. I wasn't one of those expecting that - but when I spoke about switching speeds, I wasn't warned it hadn't been done in my area either.

But I digress. If NTL have been in a position to have offered 10megs to anyone who would have wanted it in the past however many months. Then what is the big deal about switching all those over on the 1st June?

Surely if they claim they could offer every customer "up to" 10meg, then switching those over to 4meg must be as easy as tapping something in on a keyboard? I have managed in the past to change speeds with a quick phonecall.

So honestly - why the wait? And why no upgrade online like last time? It can ony be that they know the network can't handle it? And if that's the case then why offer it in the first place.

To check the config file type 192.168.100.1 in your address bar. Logon Username is root, Password is root.Click on operation configuration link on left hand side, look for Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600

Right.

Rang up the Managing Director's office where a very nice lady put me through personally to CS. The Welsh bloke there wasn't too helpful, telling me I was already on 4mb. He put me through to Tech Support, where someone called James told me that the "final migration" was June 22nd. However, he said the CS "may be able to upgrade you now."

Bounced back to CS, where a very helpful Scottish chap (who asked me to "bear with" him "just a moment" about ten times) firstly didn't recognise my password, but then said I'd be on 4mb in an hours time. He also managed to extend my free digital TV, which was due to expire next Friday, for the next six months.

Yes ADSL is and you have to watch who you sign up with as migration my sound great but sign for the wrong one and migration can be expensive or just not possible.

 :omg: here is another one who uses the service but not willing to pay the correct price bet half of NTLs customers are like that and then they complain coz there is no updating being done to the networks, or the modem coughs and misses a few pings.

It annoys me that people will lie to get a reduction in price if you are not happy enough to pay for the service at the correct price move on to ADSL and sky. :geez:

Well, after seeing some folks calling NTL and getting somewhere I phoned them myself to see if my area had been upgraded to 4 meg yet.

The girl insisted I am on 4 meg now instead of 2meg and that it's "only up to 4meg" blah blah de blah. SO< either she didn't have the correct info. Or NTL are incapable of even supplying 4 megs to me - which explains why my 10 meg speed was diabolical. It beggars belief to be honest. And for all those defending NTL - £25 for a 2meg connection in this day and age is a bloody rip off.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ex...hp?ecode=MRWYT and it seems the No.ers are wrong though
16,900 residential premises, 505 non-residential premises

is way to low, i know there are at least 31,000 council houses in wythenshawe alone, the largest so called garden city in the EU(still), and virtually every single home has access to a BT line.

interesting that Bulldog, moved their dates up to next month too, potential for 16mbit i presume(what is their upload rate?), but what was the limit on the line again ?, 3.8 miles (6.1 km) to the airport and im somewere nearer the top end of that distance 5km or there abouts.

just like to add here, the rollout is staggered so will only be available when a config file change is applied to a DHCP. Ringing CS because someone in another part of the country has the upgrade won't help. Whilst the systems may say 4Mb is available., you can only get it when the config file change is applied.

Always reboot your modem or STB before you ring anyone, because if you don't get the new speed then, the file change hasn't happened in your area.

indeed thats why many of us are reading this thread, to see evidence of this 'staggered rollout'.

so far, nothing other than some obscure reference to a single irish person getting upgraded.........

again, the fact that this so called offering is 'free' for current customers and at present false advertising for new customers

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

Good post!

Selective reading m8, some people seem to read one set of words and get a totally different meaning than the rest of us!

FFS, if moaning about NTL is all some people can do, then they need a life.

Selective reading indeed, but NTL have performed such upgrades before and should know by now the reaction of the average consumer.

2nded.

I'm effectively paying Phone+BB cost of 36 quid vs Talk Talk @ 21 quid or Tiscali ~29 quid etc.:td:

Look people, if youre not happy with what youre paying, go elsewhere! There are PLENTY of ADSL ISPs around. Can't get ADSL? Well you're pretty luck to be able to get BB at all then, so go take a hand full of happy pills!

But support is a moot point isn't it? If NTL gave the service approaching what they advertise, then I personally wouldn't care if they had one old lady who only answered the phones on a tuesday morning between 2:29am and 2:30am.

And just to point out one last time for anyone who had a dig at me. I explicitly told the girl on the phone that the 10 meg line was never anything like 10 meg for me, and I would be happy with the next tier down now it had become 4meg. Not once did she tell me it had yet to be implemented in my area and may well be another few weeks. And I'm sorry, but she should have done and no one could convince me otherwise. That's why I got all stroppy to begin with.

Isn't it also fair to assume that the 'girl on the phone' was only passing on what she had been told?

That isn't to say your complaint isn't valid, she should be better informed, but I don't think she intended to mislead you? :)

if you asked for the next teir down, and not specifically the 4Meg, then if she put you on to 2Meg then you effectively have the next teir down.......
