Re: Major connection issues! 6/6/06

that's a very ambiguous statement - is it that they were working on the network to improve it and it caused problems? or is the 'improvements' they refer to work they're now doing to stop the DNS fault happen again?

I had the same thought. At first when I read it I thought they meant that they were working on the network and thats what caused the problem but then after reading it again I thought that they meant they are now working on the network to stop it from happening again.

Can any1 interpret this any better ?

Guys , there is a temporary solution for the issue
http://ben.cheetham.me.uk/resources/net/ntl-proxy-list
Get on to the following website and set a proxy on your browser
To set a proxy , open internet explorer > Tools > Internet options > Connections > LAN settings > Clikc on Use a proxy server address for my LAN , put down the address and specify port no as 8080 .
Try out the proxies for Cosham , Swansea , Guilford etc .

cheers,

All I can say is thank God I have a second ADSL line. Had next to no issues with it the whole 3 years ive had it. Spoke to someone at NTL today who seems to think thier services are amongst the 'most reliable'. Pfft whatever next!?

I think this, more than anything else is what winds me up about NTL. On the various forums I visit, you can guarantee that at some point, someone will be asking if anyone on NTL is having connection problems. You never see it about any ADSL providers. Yet there are so many times I can't visit websites, sign into messenger, email not working etc etc.

Unfortunately this really isn't a 100% solution, although in some cases may help ... I tried it last night, and I still could not browse to a majority of sites unreliably.

I think the reason being, NTL's caches still use their own DNS servers, so if they haven't cached the DNS, browsing through a proxy you're still stuck!.....

Well, it wasnt a DNS issue but my whole connection dropped at around 20:40 and was offline up until around 21:38 tonight

Modem went crazy trying to sync and the event log showed random messages that I've not seen before

Is this upgrade related or was it simply a blip in the area? I'm in the M38 area of Manchester.

This has been driving me mad for weeks.

Oh and the service page saying it's fixed means nothing guys as last week they said the same only for it to be doing the same 2 or 3 days afterwards. They never updated it again.

I've had problems yet again this week. Yesterday I spoke to 2 people at NTL who both claimed to know nothing of any fault going on currently

Today I've not had site problems as such but my speed is varying on and off constantly. There's no way I'm getting 2mb speed right now.

It's not the upgrades I'm talking about, it's the multiple DDoS attacks they have admitted having. Each time they've been supposedly dealt with and then lo and behold the same problem happens again while NTL seem to sit there like the 3 stooges scratching their heads.

Companies can be forgiven for one off problems like this, a couple of times is getting pretty dodgy, 3 and above is getting beyond a joke for a company anywhere near the size of NTL.

Re: Major connection issues! 6/6/06

I've had 2 days of bad connections now. Saturday and Sunday evening were diabolical. The "cable" light on the modem kept going off, then flashing, then reconnecting. This would happen on and off through the evening. Then Sunday night at about 21:45 the connection dropped completely. Its working now.

I also had numerous TV issues over the weekend, like interactive and on-demand throwing errors and requiring reboots of the STB (I counted 4 separate incidents).

Things seem to be bad in NTL land at the moment.

Re: Major connection issues! 6/6/06

I'm using Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test.

I just ran it again and got very similar results. Showing a small amount of packet loss on one and an unacceptable amount of packet loss on another.

Does anyone know where I even begin to find out about that packet loss problem? I have no desire to spend my money ringing some tit at ntl that doesn't even know what it is and asks me to reboot etc etc.

I've also been severly affected recently. I did have a strong 10mb connection since installation in March but since last Tuesday my connection is a complete joke. (slower than dial up)

Spoke to technical support a couple of time to be told that there is a problem in my area WS7.

Tried changing proxies but that made no difference at all also noticed that there are no interactive services on my Tv and theres a nice flashing led that wasnt there before last week

Hi all. I have had the same problems over the last few days in KT15.

I use my ntl cable modem with two computers (only one connected at any time), on one I use the USB connection and on the other I use the Ethernet. This has worked fine for months. Today everything is okay when using my USB connection, but I cannot get any response when using the Ethernet. This has never been a problem before this weekend, so I am wondering if this is related to the ongoing problems or if it must be a problem at my end? I don't know if it is even possible for one to work and not the other, but would appreciate any help or advice you can give me. Thanks.

Free downgrade

Is it just me or is anyone else getting the same...

The last few days the cable modem has been switched off and on a few times by NTL, and yesterday I did a check. I had the 4Mb upgrade, so that explaines why the modem was switched off on on...

Tonight it started again, and when it settled down, I did a check and im back on 2Mb

Coventry... wating for modem to come back on before I click submit

You need a router, I remember when I switched from USB to Ethernet there were lots of problems, as NTL want to see the LAN MAC address or something, although I was told you could have 2 devices.

Graham M 15-06-2006 12:06

Re: [Merged] Major connection issues! 6/6/06

You must remember to reboot the modem in between using this method, you can knacker the ports constantly plugging/unplugging, the simplest way would be to get a cheap router.

Your NTL Broadband service is a joke. The outages are happening now on a regular basis this is just not on. The most recent one being Tues 6th June (Browsing issue) As I pay £17.99 a month subscription I have noticed that you don't reduce it by 60p for the day that was lost unable to use the Internet I will be contacting yourselves shortly with a view to cancelling my account and moving to another provider that is more reliable.

Hi R*****

Please accept my apologies for the problems you have been experiencing.

The problems that you were experiencing may have been caused by a DDoS attack that effected our DNS, these have since been resolved. The problems would have included inability to view Internet pages.

With regard to your comments about the reduction in charges for the service interruption, I have passed the matter to the Customer Services department for action.

Thank you for contacting ntl

Hi R******

Thank you for using our online forum. Your comments have been recorded on our database.

I apologise for the inconvenience caused by the loss of service on the broadband and have given you 3 months' connection at £8.99 starting today. Please be advised that this offer does not run concurrent with your billing date - which is the 24th of every month - and as such will lapse on the 18th of September. Your next bill will reflect the changes taking effect from today and will be a mix of charges apportioned on a part month basis for your previous and new tariffs respectively.

Thank you for contacting ntl.

My 2/4mb connection has been rubbish for the last week or so. Some sites I have bookmarked just wont load while others are fine. Hoping it'll go away soon but getting very peed off now.

My top dl speed is fine, it's just certain sites won't load - about 4/10 of my bookmarks.

I'm in SE15 btw and I'm still getting 2mb speed.

hey pepz im having this problem since last wekk, im on10meg BUT INTERNET IS PROPPA SLOW :(.. they came here and checked, replaced the modem still doesnt help, he siad if it keeps giving you problems ring support line and tell them maybee there is a fault in the network.
Lol maan not even these engineers know whats wrong, dunno when NTL will fix all this :(.

well, 'PROPPA SLOW' doesnt really say much, are you sure its not your machine (what OS), do you run ZA, have you downloaded, burned and booted a linux livecd and compared your download/upload speed, what does the speed test at the top tell you ?.

are you running on USB or rj45 network card pluged directly into your NTL 250? cm or an STB, a HW/wireless router, all these things can effect your average speeds

ROFL @ popper..
i know really well about computers/networking etc.
Ok im NOT ON A ROUTER, NOT ON WIRELESS, directly connected through the blue internet wire. Download speed IS SO SLOW: 50-70 k/sec. before it used to download @ 1.11mb/sec.
And UPLOAD IS COMPLETELY GONE WHICH I NEED SO MUCH!!
im tired of NTL to tell you the truth..
any1 else got these problems???

popper 07-07-2006 18:48

Re: [Merged] Major connection issues! 6/6/06

why are you shouting at me ?, just trying to help you incase you or some other readers dont know about above .

so what happened when you booted the livecd then?, any difference in your speeds compared to your installed OS ?.

Yo know so well that the blue internet wire would most likely in your case be a USB cable? And that, as you're able to post your upload isn't copletely gone?

PS CAPS IS SHOUTING.

To me it sounds like your modem is capped at 1024/100. You could confirm this by checking the config pages on the modem.

its alright, everyone has to learn somthing new everyday, and ntl do make you want to shout at them now and then LOL.

right, so we know now that your on a CM, so as Druchii pointed out, it does seem that ntl have put you on the lowest broadband cap of 1 mbit rather than your highest 10mbit, it seems even more likely as you say your uploading rate has really slowed down.

do as Druchii said and check your modem settings
http://192.168.100.1
log in a root with a pass of root and see what its set for
in my case its set for the 4mbit down/400 k up
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
---------------------------------
if infact you find after looking at the above modem page that they have placed you on the lowest 1mbit BB cap, and you are saying you should be on the highest 10mbit or even the 4mbit package then you need to tell them to move you over before you try the linux livecd below.

if infact it turnes out your modem is currently set for the 10mbit cap and you are still getting these slow up/down speeds, then (assuming again that you have a CD or DVD burner) get yourself a small livecd that you can burn and boot in your machine and compare the speeds your getting with your installed OS and the clean standard linux.

thats to prove to yourself that infact its the ntl end thats wrong rather than some bad OS install or setting/app thats messing up your speeds.

if it turns out your getting far better up/down speeds when booting the livecd, (a livecd will not change anything on your installed OS unless you tell it to so its a safe testing tool) then we can then begin to work out whats installed things slowing it down and remove it, such as the zone alarm firewall thats proven to slow many ntl peoples machines down.

DSL (Damn Small Linux) is as good a livecd as any so go here
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...small/current/
and download this
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...1-syslinux.iso
or here if that url isnt working (for me its not right now)
this one is, http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/damnsma...1-syslinux.iso
burn it in your CD or DVD burner, set your PC bios to boot the cd and try surfing the net and downloading/uploading stuff and compare to your installed OS speed to see if it changes in a large way.

if the readers wanting to try this but dont have a CD or DVD burner, go buy yourself one LOL, or you could load the DSL(Damn Small Linux) into the free QEMU emulator inside windows and try it there, while not ideal, it works.

it might be interesting to see peoples tests results in all the 3 ways, livecd boot, qemu boot and windows boot testing if anyone bothers to try all 3 options sometime.

http://www.h7.dion.ne.jp/~qemu-win/
copy the dsl-3.0.1-syslinux.iso to the same dir as you unpack the qemu, make a new test.bat file with this single line

qemu.exe -L . -m 128 -cdrom dsl-3.0.1-syslinux.iso -soundhw all -localtime
save it and click it to start the DSL inside the emulator.

This is getting quite ridiculous now, every day the connnection seems to work ok then suddenly stops. Some sites work but the most don't so I change proxy settings only for it to work but to stop working 5 mins later
