soz if this has already been asked.

im on 2 meg in Stevenage with an ntl 200 silver modem.

If I upgrade to 10meg using the ntl upgrade website:
Will I get 10 meg?
Will I get it immediately?
Will I be able to downgrade back to the 24:99 option (10meg with 50gig cap) once it becomes available? Or will I have to pay 37.99 for 12 months minimum?

Thanks.

As far as I'm aware you would be able to downgrade to the 24.99 option after 30 days. Your modem is capable of 10mb and it should be available in your area http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ight=Stevenage

Look down the road and if you can see a pair of legs dangling out Limp from a green box that could be the problem!!.

Now seriously, you need to get hold of TS.

and let's be clear about this, if you downgrade to £24.99 you will go to 2meg you wont remain on a 10meg option with a lower usage allowance.

I was walking through town today with a friend and he asked a woman selling ntl if she knew anything about the speed upgrades. She said this:

There are 3 new speeds coming out to replace the old ones, 1Mbps will become 6Mbps, 2Mbps will become 8Mbps and 3Mbps will become 10Mbps. 2Mbps customers should see an upgrade by the end of March next year.

Is she right or just fobbing me off? 8Mbps would be brilliant for me. (Im on 2Mbps at the moment)

Ive been upgraded to 10mb at their end.. "its a trial" said the CS chappie.. okaaaaay I said ;)

If you're on 3mb and want 10mb there isn't one, you need to ring cs and choose option 5

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

There are some horrid support on NTL phones, just spent 40minutes on phone to them to try and get the trial.

1. Standard customer support, awesome guy tried his hardest to get me upgraded to 10mb trial but said he did not have the tools to do so and put me through to technical.
2. Technical, useless git who sounded like he did not want to help or be there, said he cannot do upgrades from technical and put me through to standard support again.
3. Standard again, another idiot, asked if I had a blue box, said no have a surfboard 3100, he told me he cannot upgrade me and to call to cancel my account and state that I wanted 10mb, they should then upgrade me rather than lose me as a customer but can only ring them between 9-5.

LOL @ NTL support telling me to cancel my account to get what I want, very sad.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

retry your speed test at 3am - when the network is under least use.

Mauldor 17-11-2005 20:03

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

2mbit before - pretty stable on the whole...
10mbit upgrade - Speeds went from 512K speed to 5mbit
New flash rom upgrade to SB4100 - speeds are pretty constant at 2-3mbit, most i see tonight so far was 4mbit (whoa)...

Now for all those speed testing, seeing crap results - every man, woman and child (and his dog) will be either downloading or speed testing to see that Magic 10mbit speed - this in turn will flood the network / UBR and thus slow speeds. As per the Advice above really - either leave it for a few days to let it all settle down or try very late at night / early in the morning. If the speeds are still crap then again, I suggest you leave it a few days to allow for the Upgrade on NTL end to take place (I assume they are installing something to give all 10mbit)...

Question is - what is the rush to have 10mbit right now? do you have a urgent file to grab and need it like yesterday? Do you just want to see the download speeds say 10mbit (or close to)? It will happen as proven by the modem upgrades of late and more people posting with faster speeds.

Chrysalis 17-11-2005 20:18

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

1 - For those who got 'ignore provisioning upgrade' that looks to me you wont get the new firmware and if I remember right its a read only setting from the user's end, so I would get an engineer for that or at least ring TS.

2 - For those who got new firmware and still get 5-6mbit try setting the modem to 100mbit duplex manually or just choose auto sense and see if it improves things.

The change might still be "pending" on their system, in which case you wont receive the new file until the change has gone through.

I've just spoken to ntl CS (Scottish call centre) and was told that they are still conducting regional trials and that any upgrades may be only temporary and speeds would fluctuate for those who had been upgraded , although he did say that all 3meg customers would have a permanent upgrade by the end of the year.

I'm in Newmarket in Suffolk on 3meg.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

OK had a play about for some info on ignoreProvisioningUpgrade

Quote:

Firmware upgrades are done from the provider side, meaning it would be quite easy for affected modems to be fixed with a new release
Quote:

Preventing the firmware upgrade, or downgrading the firmware, is trivial (docsDevSwAdminStatus -> ignoreProvisioningUpgrade)
Quote:

From a network management station, the operator:
sets docsDevSwServer to the address of the TFTP server for software upgrades
sets docsDevSwFilename to the file pathname of the software upgrade image
sets docsDevSwAdminStatus to upgrade-from-mgt
Quote:

If set to upgradeFromMgt(1), the device will initiate a TFTP software image download using docsDevSwFilename. After successfully receiving an image, the device will set its state to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade(3) and reboot. If the download process is interrupted by a reset or power failure, the device will load the previous image and, after re-initialization, continue to attempt loading the image specified in docsDevSwFilename.

If set to allowProvisioningUpgrade(2), the device will use the software version information supplied by the provisioning server when next rebooting (this does not cause a reboot).

When set to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade(3), the device will disregard software image upgrade information from the provisioning server.

Note that reading this object can return upgradeFromMgt(1). This indicates that a software download is currently in progress, and that the device will reboot after successfully receiving an image.

At initial startup, this object has the default value of allowProvisioningUpgrade(2)."
Now this is just a rehash of information but from what I understand is that when your modem is NEW it is set to allowProvisioningUpgrade and it checks the server for a firmware and downloads and installs it and sets to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade.

When NTL decide that you need a speed change (downgrade OR upgrade) they send a signal to your modem to go to allowProvisioningUpgrade then either send a signal to reboot or ask you to reboot. Modem reboots and checks server for a new firmware/software downloads installs and reboots.

So, if you are set to ignoreProvisioningUpgrade you are at the hands of NTL untill they decide you are allowed the upgrade. If you have allowProvisioningUpgrade, REBOOT! as you just be have been permitted to the upgrade.

I may be completely wrong and probably are but what do others think?

Just spoke to a nice bloke in the welsh call centre who says that 'I will do that for you, please hold the line, came back a min later and said thats been done your upgraded to 10mb'.

Ive reset my modem (150) but the increase hasnt happened yet, how long does it take for the new config to be sent to the modem?.

when i login to my modem what do i need to look for in the configuration pages/status pages to indicate that the new config file has come through?

Cheers.

Samsung Settop boxes and 10mbs

Ok here goes my first post... I have been reading the site for ages and decided, today, now is the time to contribute.

I gave the 0800 number a call this morning, having tried a tier migration last night. I'm told by the chappy on the phone that most places have cable modems except this one (East Cheshire). He went on to say that the STBs from Samsung were not able to do 10Mbs and that he would send an engineer (Tuesday next week). The engineer will fit me a cable modem. I did have to fill in a new direct debit mandate - strange ! Anyway thought the above may be of intrest to someone...

A good friend (also a reader of this board), in the same area, phoned 2 minutes after me and was told that he will get a new STB, 10MBS enabled, in December.

Be good.

Took a few hours for me to receive the updated config file, modem rebooted by itself :)

Phoned NTL CS 3 times today got the following conflicting answers -
#1 - Samsung STB can support 10meg, its in my area, we can't volunteer ourselfs to be upgraded...
#2 - Only cable modems can get it, STB's will get it next year
#3 - STB's CAN'T support it, will need to get a cable modem

WTF?!?

I find it stupid how they upgraded us from the PACE STB's to the Samsung STB's only to replace them all with cable modems for the ppl wanting 10megs.

Anyone been upgraded by CS who's on a STB ? if so what did you say to them? (and possibly the name of the person you spoke to)

finally was tempted to call CS for a upgrade (all u 10mb users grrr)
a nice lady told me it was on trial and saying i would most likely not get 10mb but should get upto 8mb
doesnt sounds like she wanted to upgraded me
but i asked if i can trial it
she said she'll try and upgrade me
after a couple of mins she said the system wont let her
and said maybe my area aint updated/upgraded or something
told me i should keep trying calling back once in awhile
to see if i could get upgraded

btw im in Bournemouth with a NTL 120 modem
and still using ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr firmware with allowProvisioningUpgrade (tried restarting SACM)
should every NTL 120 SACM been updated??

Here is an interesting experiment for anyone with an Ambit120 modem who's not a chicken like me. Visit http://192.168.100.1/P_engineer.htm Change the image name from `ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr` to `ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr` and click the SUBMIT button. I'm wondering if that would force a download of the upgraded firmware and hopefully pick-up the 10Mb service profile.

Well, then.. Pass. Was that error 404 after you clicked submit or the engineer's page didn't show.

My SACM is behind a LinkSys router and when I go to that page I'm presented with a page titled `Engineer Page for Downloading Image`. It has the TFTP server IP address pre-typed as 62.253.189.100 and the image name pre-typed as `ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr`. Below that two buttons. Left button is RESET and right button is SUBMIT.

Whats the difference from a Warm restart of the modem (using the configuration screen) and a Cold restart (unplugging the modem power) and does anyone have any technical info about these cable modems and how they work?

Once i get started with things i need to know it all!

haha!

EDIT: or any information on the even log and error messages? guess i am asking for an engineers handbook or something ;)

Well, I'm not bluffing. When I click the URL from the message I posted the username and password prompt apprears. `root` goes in both of tham and that engineer page does appear. Unless (can someone verify this?) you already have the new firmware and this engineer's page is disabled, or moved/hidden? A screen shot of the page is here.

In the screen shot the URL has `cable-modem` and not `192.168.100.1`. That's because I've set that name in XP's hosts file so IE can remember the username and password.

Well, Im starting to get messed around with.. just spent 15 minutes on the phone to CS to see what was going on with my 10mb upgrade (they said they had upgraded my service this time last night but nothings happened)..

I was told the "nothing happening till December" story..

Im going to give retentions a call.

Rob2005 18-11-2005 16:57

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Unlike some here I haven't bombarded ntl cs with multiple calls for the 10MB upgrade. I called once on the 8th and was told it was a trial and for new customers only. I wasn't happy as I'd read on here that people already had 10MB and I told ntl that I'd been a customer for 15 years and it wasn't right that new customers or customers on lower tiers got preferntial treatment. Still the answer was no.

Well, I've been pretty patient and I've read the comments on here re the older modems. I have a armbit120 and got the new firmware today. To cut the story short, phoned ntl cs today asked if my area, Romford could get the new 10MB speeds. After 1 minute of checking, the nice lady said yes and was done straight away.

Considering its peak time, I'm getting on average around 5MB. Well worth the 2nd phone call.

Edit: now around 8mb:) Not bad for a "trial".

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Well. I didnt bombard NTL CS,

Just made my third call, and thanks to the helpfull chap there (who had seen my account had been changed to 10mb.. but they hadnt sent my modem the configuration file).. My modem was rebooting and up to 10mb before I had replaced the handset!!

So.. If CS had sent me the config file the first time, I would have done it in one call :)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I've just called CS and went through to a Scottish call centre. I explained I called a week ago and was informed I could have the upgrade and I was recently given the firmware update for my modem.

After a couple of minutes looking through the system he informed me I was upgraded on the billing system but not given the upgrade. Within a further 30 seconds he upgraded my modem to 10mb.

I was very calm and polite on the phone and that wouldn't of changed if he said I couldn't have it but I would of requested to be moved back to 2mb for the time being if I couldn't have it. I thanked him very much.

Maybe you should speak to someone from the Scottish call centre.

First speed test shows:

Downstream7179 Kbps (897.4 KB/sec)7753 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream497 Kbps (62.1 KB/sec)536 Kbps (inc. overheads)

It's not 10mb but I don't really care that much, it's a lot more that 2/3mb and it will no doubt get better as they tweak the system.

Good luck!!

By-the-way :PP: ;)

Right.

Im in Coventry and just finished talking to a nice lad called Patrick in Scotland. He upgraded me without a problem, but Im using an NTL: Home 100 modem. It shows 10meg in my Operational Config but I read here the 100's could not support this ?

First download was off nvdia.com at 1.1meg a second, now Im lucky to get 300k (same as when I was on 3meg)

Help plzzzzz

You know this is actually getting frustrated.

Frustrated that I dont yet have an upgrade - NO.
Simply frustrated that different people are told different information and some get it and some dont.

I really think that a letter to NTL is coming to tell them to get their staff informed better. Not that it will do any good as they never seem to reply to any of my correspondance :(
