There is a certain hurdle in the way of this happening at present relating to their current structure. I can't say anymore than that at the moment.

I imagine it's content licensing. I can see the logic in Comsat not moving too quickly on this in order to give Sky's offering less competition.

It is “Red tape” (ie. non technical issue), but it is regulatory in nature, not content related.

Just noted last night on my TV.

But as of February 2023, Gems TV (Virgin Channel 755) has cut it broadcasting hours:

Was - Live 24 hours a day.

Now - Only Live between the hours of 07:00-23:00.

Information on hours is from Gems TV's Wiki page.

2 versions of Sky News UHD have been added overnight (to the SDT). Hidden from the EPG and testing on Virgin's internal networks. Provisionally allocated channel numbers 136 and 607 and subscription packs M / Player / Mixit and above. Presumably for coverage of the Coronation.

You're welcome. The reason I said "presumably for coverage of the Coronation" in the post about the 2 Sky News UHD channels is that the Sky press release, and subsequent web posts such as the RXTV one, made no mention of UHD coverage on Virgin. Only that the coverage will be available on "Virgin channel 603", which is the HD version of Sky News. I'm still not sure why 2 separate UHD services have been added, one in the entertainment section and the other in the news section of the EPG. That could probably have been done by mapping both to the same streams. Confusing... maybe the entertainment version will be the UHD coronation coverage on Sky Showcase with a slightly different feed. Time will tell I guess.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

The info below relates to the UHD coverage only from https://www.virginmedia.com/virgin-t...ation-round-up (The page also provides details of the HD coverages)

For V6 and 360 customers
On the day of the coronation, we’re making the experience as immersive as possible.
Customers will be given access to all the action at Westminister Abbey in ultra high definition via Sky News UHD (CH 607) or on our dedicated pop-up channel (CH 136 in the Entertainment section).
Both channels will be named Sky News UHD for the day, and are yours for no extra cost from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 6 May.

'All the action", the fools talk like it's a football match.

Also, it says 'If you don't have UHD you can watch on our HD channels'. Surely they mean the Sky News UHD channels in HD??

Yes, that would have been an excellent better choice of wording.

I suspect that Virgin simply copy/pasted the synopsis of previous sports coverage and changed a few words. Action indeed! They're hardly going to get down to it in a church :D

I couldn't be bothered with it in the end, but I saw on the news that the police arrested six people. Were there any protests then in the end?

This is the same police who say that Governments cutbacks mean that they no longer have the resources to turn up for house burglaries, can't monitor paedophiles preying on children on the internet etc.

So much for equality & freedom to protest in today's UK. Anyone would think that this pair were more important than anyone else.

The viewing figures are out for Saturday & apparently 20 million people watched the Coronation in the UK either broadcast or through streaming services. When you consider the cup final was watched by around the same number last year I can't see the monarchy disappearing anytime soon.

Sky looks very attractive when you see the ‘free’ streamer add-ons, but the cost overall for Sky I think is rather higher than Virgin. There was a £30 difference for the full package on Sky compared to Virgin when I last looked two or three months ago.

So don't use /want sports or movies , Netflix £ 10.99 , mobile £11 , 12 gig ( use at most 1 per month) unlimited text ,calls virgin maxit ( I think) 120 meg, landline which I don't want  £34 so a total of £55.99 a month. + By friend have sky on tablet, can't claim to use very often  however always looking for a better deal. Did have a better deal on Netflix via daily mail code , however questioning if I will bother , as watching less and less and hopefully summer will soon be here, then I will be off to France

Not at all no i pay £31p/m for sky stream entertainment plus cinema, that includes Netflix, Discovery+ and Paramount+ leave anytime
Plus £40p/m for giganet 1gbs up and down broadband leave anytime
Equalivalent on vm would set me back £85p/m that's without paramount+ and discovery+ aswell as a 18 months contract.

A friend was considering doing something similar - there's some very good deals on the alt nets round here (Community Fibre 500MbS £23.50) but stuck to VM after negotiating with them. The website price for your package was £37pm and then there were some extra fees for each room so it got a bit pricey in the end.

Whilst he was looking we chatted about gaming as he is a gamer too he was like "i got this deal for you which includes ad skipping and no contract, also no charge for the puck."

There is a trend towards standardisation across platforms using HTML5 apps which can be easily modified to suit individual devices. It shouldn't really be too difficult to bring the same apps to the 360 and the V6 but really depends on choices made by Virgin for their devices.

Customers also have a choice and don't have to be corralled towards the 360. Smart TVs within their product support period, Roku devices, Amazon Fire devices etc are more likely to have a much wider range of apps.

Now that there's very good broadband from VM's competitors, there's no need to stay loyal to one brand. Especially with higher household bills.

Absolutely VM need to book up or they'll find themselves losing a lot of customers as the likes of hyperoptic, cityfibre and openreach roll out their fttp services.
Quite a few on cityfibre are offering things like 1000mbs first 3 months free then as little as £35p/m afterwards.
I don't know about openreach fttp as we're a cityfibre area and i have to say Giganet is one of the best isps i have ever been with.

Virgin M250 is £33 per month (after six months at £15 for New customer) so is actually cheaper

A few months back i left Virgin Media after 27 years!...I switched to Community Fibre 1Gb for £27 which is amazing. It's the first time i've had an actual alternative to VM for broadband. OpenReach can only get 48Mb to my property with no fibre upgrades in sight.

Although i'm happy on the whole with leaving...i miss the recording functionality on the Tivo Box. Streaming services are great but i've noticed that channel 4's streaming quality is absolute dog poop.

iPlayer has the best streaming quality in my opinion followed by ITVX, then channel 5 and last channel 4.

Cheaper than Gigabyte yes but there are other options on the Cirtfibre network too.
Not to mention with VMS network you're restricted to just one provider and VMS upload speeds are appaulling.
VM is £50p/m for 250mbs after 18 months.

Older boxes don’t always cope with the newer technology too well. If this impacts on performance, it makes Virgin look bad. So they either have to force you to change or they will deny that streamer to your box.

Can't really compare virgin stream with sky stream as one is only available to vms broadband customers and the other is available to anyone with decent speeds.

The same (Arris) boxes are also used for TV 360 and can be converted between the 2 formats, they seem to cope quite well with the extra apps. Although the Humax TV 360 boxes don't appear to have the same flexibility.

Original flavour Tivos didn't cope well with apps even when they were new. If boxes are light on resources they will quickly become sluggish when the workload is increased.

I don't have a Tivo box, it's a V6 box that I have.

Coming soon:

The service holding the placeholder for Sky News UHD has been repurposed as Sky Sports Ultra HD 2. The provisional channel allocation is 539 but could possibly change, before launch, to the 535 slot cleared by the movement of Sky Racing HD.

Could this one get used by Eurosport to show the French open in UHD?

They usually have a pop-up channel appearing this time of year for it

My guess would be Sky plan to use Ultra HD 2 for a 3rd Premier League game in UHD on Sunday.

Eurosport UHD resurfaced earlier in the month on the 16th. Technically, the service is always there in the background, just hidden from the EPG and not carrying any elementary streams (audio, video etc). If you are interested, this is the post I made on DS Forums at the time. https://forums.digitalspy.com/discus...ment_102822000

How difficult is it to put an app on the V6 box?

TimeLord2018 24-05-2023 13:21

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

Perhaps they choose not to , They see TiVo as legacy platform, Disney+ and UKTV app aren't on it either.

The reason ITVX is on the V6 is probably because its got content from ITV1 on it - a PSB

It depends how complicated the app is. I'm not sure how the V6 works with apps but, at its most basic, for many devices adding an app is a simple as providing an icon to make it easy to select the app and a URL for the html5 source. Not rocket science. Tweaking the app to display properly on each device should be the hardest part. Bloatware apps such as itvX will probably be more difficult.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

There will be differences though in how the apps can integrate with the EPG and other platform specific features.

So there would still need to be one app for 360 / Stream and a separate similar version for V6.

But a lot less complicated than, say, Freeview Play apps which have to work across hundreds of different devices. Sure, it's not completely straight forward, apps have to be designed to work properly with different resolutions etc. so an app designed for HD content fills a 4K screen when launched and not just a quarter of the screen (yes, I have seen apps do that). Launching apps from the EPG is niche but should be relatively simple as the EPG should simply launch an app rather than be integrated with it. So each device should have its own routine to launch any app from the EPG.

Video and audio were added for Sky Sports UHD 2 a couple of days ago and were added to Eurosport UHD today. So both, as Martin Österdahl might say, are "good to go".

Neither of these channels are available on Stream boxes. Par for the course with Sky channels - neither the recent UHD channel launches or Sky Kids HD have been added on the platform. I thought Eurosport UHD might have been made available though. Presumably it wasn't last year either.

Yes, there weren't any Stream subscription codes in the info I saw. Sky Sports UHD 2 is for Sky Sports UHD tier subscribers on TV 360 & V6 boxes. Eurosport UHD is included in Maxit or the Sports personal pick for users on newer packs, Mix or Full House for those on legacy deals.

Maybe BT Sport channels soon to be TNT Sports ?

e.g TNT Sports promoted ahead of Eurosport especially if they agree a new deal with WBD if they haven't already since the SD versions of TCM and Cartoon Network were removed.

We’ve heard that one before, MB and the reality turns out to be disappointing, to say the least.

Probably it’s just a few channel number changes…

I checked as far back as August 2016 and it was 526 then. Any dates before that aren't reliable but:
July 2015 528 > 526
July 2009 530 > 528

As said above - I see it moved 526 in a mass move of channels in July 2015.

Can't find it ever being on 525.

Historically 525 was used by Eurosport News then subsequently by British Eurosport 2. Last year 525 was used for Eurosport 5 HD for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
