I need also convinced by whether or not you can bookmark programmes!

When they have fixed that I might sign up!!

Are we still getting the new UI for V6 ? If so it may be worth while waiting!

If you can’t do that, it is another reason why I would not want the 360 software. Hopefully, that will change soon, or it would be a huge backward step.

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

By bookmark, do you mean using the search to find a show, so you can find it later more easily? Or was it more granular that that?

Sorry haven't been a Virgin user myself for some time, and never made use of that function on TiVO.

OLD BOY 13-01-2021 17:28

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

On the V6, you can search for a Netflix or Amazon show and you can bookmark that show or a whole series. It will then show up under ‘My Shows’ with your recordings. If you then select that programme from ‘My Shows’ it will take you straight into your bookmarked programme.

If that is not available on the 360, it is a major omission, in my view, but it may simply be that the necessary permissions are pending approval by Netflix and Amazon.

Either way, I most certainly wouldn’t sign up without it.

yeah you would search for a show or film and select the "bookmark show/tv series" option, then it would appear in "my shows" for quick access, doesnt seem possible, they have added a watchlist option but no netflix is there and only a handful of things have appeared from amazon prime video, seems a major backwards step as this was incredibly useful for my disabled father to remember his shows etc, hopefully gets added again properly

Bob 13-01-2021 17:35

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

So there is similar system called 'Watchlists' I think it's called. It bookmarks in the same way but there are two observations:
  • It doesn't work with Netflix because they have taken the decision to make it harder to aggregate their content so you need to go into the app - this is a change in policy which affects all over the top providers (Sky & Google TV can't do this either).*
  • It seems to be generally hit and miss whether it's an option or not on programmes - sometimes it was there and sometimes it wasn't - I'm assuming that's just a software bug at the moment that will get resolved

*This doesn't affect TiVO because the system was already set-up and in place.

Ditto.

It really sounds like they've launched this software way too early.

I'm keeping a keen eye on this thread, when things improve (and my V6 hard drive is reasonably empty) I'll take the plunge

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

I wanted the 360 for it’s more modern UI, but the priority consideration is that it needs to have at least the same level of functionality as the V6.

I don’t mind not having things work the same way, that is often inevitable, but to not be able to distinguish the new content and whether you have seen it already for recording purposes is one big problem straight away. Now we hear you can’t bookmark Netflix shows...well, I know that may not be Virgin’s fault, but those two issues alone mean I’m staying with the V6s.

The concern I have is that VM may decide not to keep the V6s up to date with the new streamers that they add in the future. That would really hack me off!

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

Old Boy, VM will support V6s for as long as there is a significant number of customers with them (though some of it will be out of their hands). The support will then likely taper off as the numbers drop and also depending on the technical/monetary requirements. For example, there have been instances where certain technology changes have been brought about because the media suppliers, be that film studios, TV production companies or record labels have insisted on certain levels of protection for their content. As the levels change so too have the supported tech requirements for the end user.

If the systems that the V6 uses no longer provide the levels of protection required by the content companies, the app providers may be forced to withdraw their app(s) even though VM would still like them on their platform.

As things currently stand I think I would be more likely to abandon Virgin TV and move to NowTV than migrate to the 360. I’m under contract for another year so hopefully Virgin will have improved things by then

Some have said that a lot of these problems will be resolved with updates as VM put matters right, but if Netflix and others won’t allow any more search integration, that appears to be a barrier that is unlikely to be bridged.

Lets hope these problems will be resolved with updates because if they ain't some hard decisions might have to be made in time.

Hardly a like for like change - presumably you are aware that you cannot record anything through NowTV?

awesometeeth 15-01-2021 20:48

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

I cant fathom the response to the new setup (unless you lose recording space) as its a genuine improvement. who cares if you cant bookmark things from netflix, netflix has its own bookmarking functionality, it cant bookmark disney plus or rakuten either but we somehow manage.

whats better? its so much simpler and profiles are such a bonus. especially as you can switch profiles with a press of the button on the remote and it means i can switch my sports profile on in a quick press.

the screen that brings up what you were last watching is also great, come out of a movie or TV show you were watching and you can just click straight back into it from the menu that appears under saved. searching is awesome as well, was looking for the king of staten island today, a quick press of the voice button and it brings it up on the listing (next friday). the light up remote is a god send as well.

things i dont like, no key word watch list and cant reclaim deleted shows as i managed to remove a tipping point episode by accident and i got yelled at :D

I dunno, people wanting to switch to sky over netflix, weird stuff.

The only thing that keeps me with Virgin is access to the football, and the BB, if I wasn't a football fan I'd probably just have the BB and I'd continue to use Netflix and Now TV for my shows.

Ditto for me. The only reason for recording programmes these days is to be able to skip forward through the commercials. This is a doddle with the 360 voice-recognition software.

or even the more responsive remote, with a push on the right segment it skips 30 seconds ahead instantly.

quality is far better on the channel than catch up though.

I think the new UI was badly needed, the current one for the V6 is looking well past its sell by date and it is a poor comparison with Sky.

It’s just a shame that there are those downsides.

so basically those of us who have and use the service and talk about the positives are "protesting too much". when to be fair the only single reason i posted is because, as is so often the case, people were really painting a negative picture of things. As that wasnt the reality at all for me, kinda felt it should be balanced out so others arent unjustly put off by the moaning brigade.

for my setup its a been a nice step up, the voice control, the profiles, the light up remote (yeah i love it) and the fact it has a page dedicated to things you're half way through watching is a genuinely useful upgrade over the v6.

The remote has a backlight for use in the dark. This is motion activated. I suspect this is what you are referring to.

No, I am familiar with the motion-activated backlight. This is after I have used the button to switch the box off. I then lay the remote down on the table and after all of the motion-activated backlights have gone out the on-off red button will flash slowly about five times once a second. I wondered if this could be some kind of warning light - probably low battery. There is nothing in the meagre instructions that came with the remote.

BenMcr 19-01-2021 12:04

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

If the 360 box is in standby the remote will only flash the power button. It only lights up the rest of the buttons if the 360 box is on.

So it may be that putting the remote down is still activating the lights - but only the power button.

FYI the box would have been in standby when I experienced the slowly flashing red on-off button.

Is there a low battery warning for the 360 boxes? I had one of my two remotes die on me yesterday evening without any warning due to flat batteries. I was wondering if I had missed any warning.

yeah i only had the v6 box since the day it came out, the new layout automatically puts the things your have partially watched underneath the saved section when you select it, recordings, catch up etc.

edit: so i partially watched the first episode of blackadder on catch up, when i select save, it now appears automatically underneath and i can select it instantly. next to it is a recording off the chase and next to that is a partial watch of a sky cinema film I started to stream. just a thumbnail so i can get back into the streaming show or recording where i left off

have you actually used the new software?

The power button flashes 5 times whenever you move the remote when the box is switched off. When it is switched on all the buttons light up. I don't think it's a low battery warning. ;)

its harder to describe as its a much simpler layout compared to the old system, thumbnails in sub sections and such and of course everyone's stuff is different per profile! so my partner has her cats from hell partial watched stuff and i have blackadder on mine.

I had totally forgotten I had started to watch the first episode on catch up as i was called away but was over the moon to find it just in a thumbnail when i loaded up the second box upstairs on my profile.

I have had 360 since Saturday and the first few days of using it I am pretty impressed.

I have my second box which has a hard drive and you can select which box to record on but the listing comes up all in one.

I do miss the wish list and could be doing with Netflix content being available on the voice search.

Start from beginning is superb on a lot of channels, and it even understands my Scottish accent.

The light up remote is great and being able to change your TV source using the remote control is great meaning I don't have to have my actual TV remote around just to change from the Fire Stick or Apple TV.

I was happy with the Tivo software on the V6 and while there are a few small aspects of that not available on 360 I have to say I am delighted with it and even my wife is impressed with the system.

Having the HD channels where the SD channel used to be is an added bonus and makes the EPG less cluttered.

For me it was defo worth the upgrade on my existing boxes.

Thank you, Steve. Will you let us know when they resolve those recording and bookmarking issues we’ve been talking about?

Personally, I don’t care about the wish lists and I haven’t used that facility much at all.

I do like the fact that the watch list (my shows) for all the V6s are on one list. That is very handy. I also like the idea of profiles to separate out the lists of different members of the family.

I would love to see Discovery+ added along with a full UKTV Play, CBS Catch UP and Horror Bites.

Like you we have had problems and only on the minis! Both Amazon and Netflix can be playing normally then drop out, at which point you are retuned to the Virgin Media start up logo and then back to whatever TV channel you were watching. As I said, this only happens on the two mini boxes we have (which are hard wired to the network via ethernet). It has never happened on the main box!! Hoepfully they'll sort this in an update - meantime we just use the TV's built-in apps.

Are you using a VM-supplied HDMI lead, and it goes straight from box to TV?

Try lowering the video resolution in the minibox settings.

Try lowering the video resolution in the minibox settings.

im using the hdmi cable that virgin supplied, changed the resolution settings but still the same, can browse the app etc fine but the videos just show the white spinning circle then says the error, only temp fix is to do a factory reset all the time which is a pain cos it logs out of everything, all the other streaming services work fine, just prime that has an issue for me

Another problem for the 360 (well, it would be for me anyway) is that, apparently, you can only have one remote paired to each box. Currently, with my V6, my wife and I both have remotes next to us where we sit. Not being able to do that would be a bit irritating. That is unless any of you clever people on here have found an answer to this problem?

Only one official remote, but you can also use a multi-remote. I use a harmony remote also.

You need to program a few buttons after setting up, but yeah, works without issues.

Simple - Virgin TV go app. Have as many remotes as you want.

I have three V6 boxes, if it's just a case of updating the software then I'm happy enough to do that, but I don't want the 360 boxes.

That’s fair enough - it’s your choice.

But for those of us who take advantage of all the facilities on the V6, such as bookmarking and recording new programmes only, and who want as many streamers as possible, we don’t want second best, even if we do get a flashier UI.

I think you are limited to 2 V6 boxes with the 360 software.

Check back through this thread.

No, you can have 3 converted. You just can't do it yourself.

So, can you get two of the three done without an engineer visit, and why can you only have two upgraded, why is that?

Thx

There is no self-install package with three remotes. I guess so few people have three that it isn't worth the trouble of creating one.

And you can't just have two of the three done - it's all or nothing.

Apologies if this has been asked before...

Is the 360 software gifted with a dynamic EPG? With so many late changes to schedules in recent months, I can't think why ;) It does become tiresome having your recordings messed up.

A real first world problem I know but thought I'd ask

Thanks

No, the EPG is not realtime or dynamic. It seems to update just like the V6 Tivo software does.

One would have thought by now Virgin would be using a dynamic EPG on their new software.

The disadvantage of that is late running programmes could end up clashing with other recordings.

However, with six tuners on each box, that is unlikely to happen for the majority.

I've got it on a Sony Freeview HDD recorder, which is 15 years old, its not exactly a new concept. Maybe it can only be done with Freeview?

Thanks lonespeaker

That's a real shame, I wonder if the EPG version is all or nothing too so if it dynamic doesn't exist on TiVo/V6 then it can't exist on the 360

Every platform EPG is dynamic, apart from VM.

But it still doesn't stop recordings ending early on Sky, Freeview etc.. It is only as dynamic as the companies ensuring the EPG is up to date.

dont know if its new, but when the virgin tv go app really works well with the 360 platform. it did just get an update but i cant be sure this stuff was in there before.

all the profiles stuff is there and you can watch recordings or stream live from the one app and its all integrated with the 360 now.

The 360 boxes can have both major 'point' releases and minor updates within those releases. So there are times where it'll get an updated doesn't fundamentally change what you see.

Same with the TV Go app.

Saying that, profiles in the TV Go app for the 360 boxes has been since the start.

BenMcr, is the 360 TV Go a new app with a separate app store listing, or does it rearrange itself according to whether the account has a Horizon or Tivo powered equipment on it?

I don't know where I read it, but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the TV Go app was always an adapted (for UK Tivo) and reskinned version of the app used with the Horizon in mainland Europe anyway.

BenMcr 29-01-2021 11:30

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

Yes, it's the same TV Go app for all UK customers, with the 360 features hidden if you have TiVo or V6.

wish I had paid more attention, just seems now app is now fully complete and you can do anything with profiles that you can with the box. and playback seems to have more options.

either way, im actually pretty impressed with the app now, feels odd coming here singing virgins praises :D

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

I currently have 3 V6 boxes and am considering 'upgrading' to 360. Can anyone confirm if Virgin are still charging extra for the third box under the new system?

Also has anyone got any good deals on the ultimate oomph bundle given latest £4.50 price hike? Otherwise I would be up to £120/month for the 3 boxes.

One other question - does virgin tv go app now work with *all* channels? It got a lot better but still annoying when you would go to eg BBC or BT Sport and they didn't have license ability

iadom 30-01-2021 12:22

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)

£120 a month, I have 2 V6 boxes, 200gb BB, single phone line. Full Sky/BT package. The latest price hike will push my payment to exactly £140 per month. Definitely not on the Ultimate Oomph package.

I just wish I could get the Sports without all the film channels which we never use.

Time to make that phone call again methinks.;)

The problem is one does not exactly save that much when they get rid of the film channels and keep the sports channels..
