Breaking news!
Sources have given us information regarding Sky Atlantic arriving on vm.

It is not happening anytime in the next 3 years sadly.

Silliness aside though we have been given a rumour that vm could launch a ultimate sports package where you can subscribe to skysports, box nation, bt sport, racing uk, eurosport, premiersport, at the races under 1 simple package.
No pricing has been given but we think it'll be around about £60p/m.

The advantage of the ultimate sports package from Virgin's point of view would be that they could finally make some money out of their sports offering, assuming that the non Sky channels were offered to them on a reduced wholesale price basis.

It will never happen it would have such limited appeal let alone be expensive on top of your basic tv sub.

Not only that but while bt sport is part of XL, it would need to be cheaper for XL or dearer for non XL

I was surprised it lasted as long as it did - why would Sky allow a competitor to sell Sky's most expensive programming at a lower cost than its own platform? For once, VM customers got a better deal than the satellite owners.

We have no further information the pricing was only guess work it could be dearer it might not be,
also as mm said it may never happen.
This is a new source that has given us this rumour we are just posting what we got told.

Re: S4C HD.

Apparently, according to S4C themselves, only their Euro 2016 matches will be available in HD on Virgin Media.

Sky and Freesat will get the full service, which starts on 7/6/16.

How on earth did S4C and Virgin arrive at that?!

Very strange. Maybe VM said they'd do it for free for the Euros but would require payment for S4C's normal schedule. But as a PSB, I thought VM would take it at no cost anyway.

SKY have no say in bt sport, premier sport, racing uk, eurosport.
I think SKY own at the races though not sure.
SKY atlantic is available to anyone with a broadband connection via nowtv so in a way they are letting anyone have it.

Think it may have been extended when BT Sport Europe was added. Doubt they would take it out of the XL pack as it would make it far less attractive.

Basically, Sky won't offer it on a wholesale deal. It is only available directly from Sky either on its satellite platform or Now online service. The exception to this is Sky Germany which does wholesale Atlantic to Liberty Global's Unitymedia cable company, and in HD too.(Channel 600)
It will be interesting to see if Vodafone's forthcoming TV platform offers NowTV too.

It was interesting to note that in the week Amazon Prime announced that AMC's latest show Preacher will be on the streaming service NOT on BT's AMC channel. So, we're not missing anything but not having that channel, if you can call it a channel at all, part time evening service more like.

I think because Sony co-produced it, AMC does not get to exploit overseas sales, that's up to Sony. Good reason for VM to get Prime onto Tivo.

We don't know that for sure. Remember, EETV does not offer the Sky channels directly unlike VM and TalkTalk. TalkTalk used to offer NowTV but Sky or TalkTalk pulled the plug on the venture. (The standard Movies on-demand service remains on TalkTalk but not the live channels).

I think Virgin take the view that if they offered Now TV on the TiVo, people would cease their subscriptions to Sky through the cable packages they offer (and thereby make a profit) and instead would subscribe directly to Sky through the Now TV app, thereby missing out on that profit.

However. I choose to do both, as I suspect do most cable subscribers who get Now TV. So I think Virgin should go for it, and if they are concerned about people opting only for Now TV, Virgin could require that to access this app via the TiVo, you must be on the XL pack.

TBF this is codswallop sky would probably allow nowtv on tivo if it ever came up.
Nowtv is offered on BTtv (movies only atm) also the same is on talktalk tv too as there is a nowtv app on youview (movies only for now.)
Maybe it's vm who don't want nowtv on tivo?
SKY are already making nowtv available on more devices and pvrs i believe the new freesat freetime and freeview has nowtv on too i'm not 100% sure about this though.

ALL, the channels that Sky have - SA and ITV encore, that VM customers want, but silly Directors wont allow it.

At the end of the day - Isn't it US the customers who should decide that.

Sky have repeatedly said that VM have been offered the channel at a price - BUT VM wont budge.

How pathetic and rather childish in my view. WE THE CUSTOMER, should decide who wants it.

We are supposed to get BT Sport FREE, but what a surprise, our subs went up.

VM are not stupid are they.

What appears to be the situation is that Sky wanted to charge VM a price which would not have allowed them to make a profit without putting their rates up to customers. However, this problem would be resolved if Now TV were to be added to our apps on Tivo; those charges would be paid directly to Sky by those who wanted it without adding to the cost of the Virgin bundles of channels.

ITV Encore is exclusive to Sky for its initial period of broadcasting (we think this is for a period of 18 months to two years, which is nearly up now).

No its not pessimistic Andrew as my suspicions are that a exclusive 5 year deal was signed by ITV and Sky over ITV Encore and not the 2 year deal that some seem to think was signed.

This would probably be classed as a regional channel. VM provide S4C SD nationally, which they don't really have too, but adding S4C HD will certainly use up valuable network resources. If VM do offer it, like with BBC1 Wales HD, I think it will end up as Welsh headends only.

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...796846#M120677

Looking at that forum, the poster who mentioned the four-year funding deal has suggested June 2016 not June 2018 for the end of Sky exclusitivity.

On 1/4/15 Nogrod said "Unlikely we will see it anytime soon. The channel has a 4 year funding partnership with Sky."
https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...796846#M120677

On 11/11/2015 Nogrod said "Sky financed the launch of the channel which included a period of exclusivity for their satellite customers. At a rough guess this deal still has around another 8 months to run."
https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...2305577/page/3

At the time of the announcement in January 2014, The Guardian reported "Under the deal, ITV Encore will be made available on Sky for an undisclosed "period of exclusivity", which will give the satellite broadcaster a chance to use it as a drawcard for new customers."
http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...sky-itv-encore

The channel launched 9/6/14 so we should know soon if it was two years or not! I suspect VM would want to promote it before the Euros start and possibly as an alternative to football if it was going to have it soon.

According to the Telepgraph, it is a 4-year partnership. But does that mean the exclusive period is also 4years?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...-Sky-deal.html

ITV has taken its biggest step so far away from free-to-air television by agreeing a deal with British Sky Broadcasting to launch a dedicated drama channel on Sky’s satellite service.

The two companies have signed a four-year partnership that will give ITV a foothold in pay-television for the first time since the disastrous ITV Digital venture folded 12 years ago.

My *guess* is that it was a four-year deal with a break clause for either party half way through. Hence the time period not being stated in the press release. The fact that we have heard nothing of a forthcoming launch on other platforms suggests that it will last the full four years. Ofcom are hilarious how they never interfere in these dirty deals to withhold channels from people. The only time they've got involved really is to break up sky's exclusive hold of premier league football.

I thought at the time that was a good thing and they'd done us a favour!

Sky prices stay the same and now we have to pay another company to watch the matches we could have got with sky before! Ofcom must have been paid off by another company to "investigate" it

Vince, a gentle reminder that it was the European Commission that required the Premier League rights to be sold to more than one bidder, not Ofcom. And if you wish a particular market to be investigated, let the relevant body (the CMA, not Ofcom) know here.

It's not usual in any country to force companies to sell things to one another. By doing so, you remove the market ie the regulator would have to decide the price at which every channel was sold to every TV platform. Not really practical.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

l see your point Andrew but surely there comes a point when Ofcom should step in and caps prices to a certain rise each year instead of companies basically racking up prices to a level where they think they can get way with it and hoping that many customers don't notice the big inflation busting price rises.

2004-2007 was the last time that Sky held all live rights. They had 138 matches.

In 2016-2019 Sky holds live rights to 126 matches and BT has 42 matches making a total of 168 matches.

The average Sky Sports subscriber watches 30 Premier League matches a year.

So:
- Splitting the rights has resulted in a Sky Sports subscriber getting 12 fewer matches in their subscription.
- It has also given them a choice - get 42 matches at a lower price instead of paying for 126 matches of which you'll only watch a quarter of.
- But if you wanted to watch the same number of matches as before ie 138 matches then you would require two subscriptions.

Regulation of the markets is the responsibility of the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) ; confusingly not Ofcom.
Their responsibility is to ensure that markets function correctly and players in a market don't operate cartels and too many companies don't merge etc. They're in the news at the moment as it is likely that they will force a combined Ladbrokes-Coral to sell some shops.
If companies are acting noncompetitively or a market sector is not working well then you can inform them and they will investigate. They might delegate it down to Ofcom to do the actual investigation as they have the knowledge but markets are the CMA's responsibility.

Yes, my post states that the total number of matches has risen by 30 matches from 138 in 2004/7 to 168 2016/19. 2004/7 was the last period of Sky exclusivity.

No one's pretending that sports telly is a bargain but Muppetman is correct in his assertion. I suspect people are watching the same amount ie 30 matches a season but they have the option of watching more matches now than in any previous season.

Not really Den I agree things are expensive these days but try going to a game or compare to other forms of entertainment like the theatre , cinema etc.

These days people demand more for instance HD , 4K , match choice , On Demand all this comes at an increased cost to platforms.

To keep the call centre happy in Swansea? :D All I can guess is the Welsh Government leaned on VM and this was a compromise.

In other countries, I think LGI have a Netflix-style service that's included as part of the base package. I can see VM building up to this type of offering.

Hi, what I mean is that extra is still charged for what have been standard services for a long time. So extra is charged for colour TV licences v black and white licences although colour has been the standard for 40 years. So don't expect a premium for HD to go anytime soon judging by this! Sprry for any obscurity. :)

I agree mate, that's why I ditched my Virgin Tv package, switched to Now Tv streaming for my premium content, best moved I made and saved a small fortune as well.

Hi, what I mean is that extra is still charged for what have been standard services for a long time. So extra is charged for colour TV licences v black and white licences although colour has been the standard for 40 years. So don't expect a premium for HD to go anytime soon judging by this! Sprry for any obscurity. :)

You would have thought they would have decided one way or the other by now!

Worth noting that the monochrome licence is actually the TV licence with a colour supplement added from 1/1/68 for those with colour sets.
