Thanks Dave and those who advocated the use of 8/8.1 drivers for printers, just installed the 8.1 drivers and prints fine. Thanks for the help guys.

Oh just found it, still not sure whether to believe it though.

oh yer! Well i didn't migrate i did a clean install so lets hope they give me a key, although it doesn't matter as i have a legal 8.1 install. :)

I am sure i read somewhere that this news was updated and they then said you still needed a valid windows key.

Quote:

So, to be on the safe side, its best you ensure you have a valid genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license installed in order to qualify for the final release. Company officials have noted though if you join the Windows Insider Program and upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10, you will qualify for the free upgrade to the final release.

---------- Post added at 19:20 ---------- Previous post was at 19:02 ----------

This is what i read where Gabriel Aul comfirmed after being pressed you still needed a valid key, so even though this post is dated 11th May and the other link says updated 18th May i am still not sure what is correct.

Quote:

Update: Gabe Aul has clarified that those upgrading will need a valid license for Windows 7 or 8.

I was just about to post this, i guess it'll be on the fast ring? How long do builds via update take to install?

There are loads of windows store apps that have an update at the moment too, i like the new weather app and the people app doesn't crash anymore.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Oh good. Thought I was going to have to wipe Windows off earlier, running so slow but found a couple of programs that even though I'd quit them about 6 hours before hand they were still running. Closed them down, deleted IE 11, tweaked my internet settings a bit and back to full speed. Even seems to load whilst doing other things.

---------- Post added at 16:06 ---------- Previous post was at 16:06 ----------

I can't even open the Store app.

Downloading the build now. :)

fbl_impressive professional 10122.

---------- Post added at 19:31 ---------- Previous post was at 18:47 ----------

Installed now, the start menu is messed up, just mainly squares for the apss no text, Comodo firewall wont run, time for a reboot.

---------- Post added at 19:42 ---------- Previous post was at 19:31 ----------

Another reboot fixed mostly the start menu although there are messy large icons of things i have added to it and the mail app looks in Russian.

---------- Post added at 19:54 ---------- Previous post was at 19:42 ----------

Pinned apps and folders that aren't from the store look a mess and magnified.

---------- Post added at 20:33 ---------- Previous post was at 19:54 ----------

Deleting and reinstalling Comodo fixed that issue and deleting the the Bulgarian keyboard language fixed the mail and calendar issues, just stuck with the messy start menu now with added apps and folders but then this is pre release software.

---------- Post added at 20:56 ---------- Previous post was at 20:33 ----------

Is it just me or are the window borders now white instead of grey?

I just upgraded to build 10122.

Well, after having the thing BSOD and roll back a few times because F-Secure (I decided to try the 1 yr free from VM last month) just hated it so had to uninstall it to get the build updated.

Looks good and better news for me the Start Menu is back working, yey! F-Secure will not install at all now, but no big deal.

It wasn't avast i had to uninstall it was Comodo.

anyone having any problems with web video? its only happening on a few Facebook vids looks like a typical codec issue. It presented itself early so did what I usually do anyway and recovered to clean install still did it. Installed CCCP still does it . My Start menu keeps breaking opens shows one or 2 icons after a few tries its back then breaks again.

The newest AMD Driver actually works for the first time it allows me to play games and output HDMI audio to my Sony amp. OTB this build really struggled with multiple displays

You need to be on the FAST RING to get offered build 10122, i got offered it 30mins after i changed my setting.

Although you may want to hold off for the next build when we're likely to get new icons and the win32 start menu apps won't be pixelated.

GODMODE works in windows 10, personally i didn't even know what it was, i must have been living under a stone with other OSes!

For anyone that doesn't know what it is it just creates a list of all windows features into 1 list making it far easier to find what you want.

To activate GODMODE, create a folder and name it, GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

I bet it will be 22 they tend to release the same build after any bug fixes in windows update the Fast Ring is meant to find them. Fast ring will get 25 or above next the Slow will catch up. I would be surprised if Fast ring got 25 and not a newer build than that

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Well, I've been dual booting it with no problems for a few weeks (apart from housemates complaining that several services provided by my PC running Windows 8 are not available under 10 (I had not installed them in Windows 10).

So, yesterday, I took the plunge. I upgraded my Windows 8 install to Windows 10 using the Windows update method on the Windows Insider website. I waited for Windows 10 to download and install, got a black screen during the "Setting up a few more things" phase.

I reset the machine and let it roll back to Windows 8. Booted the machine up and removed a few startup items, then tried the install again. Same result, so I reset and let it roll back again.

Did a little Googling and found that Windows 10 has problems installing if you have the Hyper V role/feature added to your Windows 8 install (I had added this a while ago so I could muck around with Virtualisation, then stoped mucking around with Virtualisation and forgot I'd added Hyper V). I removed Hyper V, rebooted, went through the install process again and an hour later, I had a working Windows 10 install asking me to log on.

Just need to delete the partition I created for the dual booting now.

I upgraded to 10130 with no issues this time. The new icons look good and no problems like previous builds.
Edit: It wont let me in the Insider Hub app, says I'm not a member of the programme, oops!

The icons are likely to change again as MS posted a different picture by mistake last night, but these icons we have now are the same as build 125, i still like them though.

Ah, the icons are as pictured on the bottom row in 10130, so are already different to 10125, then :)

Done clean installs and everything :)

Anyway installed 10125 US cortana does not work I expected that. Went into update and downloaded the 10130 update extracted the install.esd and converted it to iso but allowed the update to continue and low and behold I am now on 10130 US. However in between I decided to update my bios as this was literally the only thing I did not try previous so it could be that. I will ghost this and try again with the gb 10130 iso I created earlier

Tried reseting a pin but it won't let me do that either, atleast loads of other people on the feedback hub have this problem to.

My problem is i already had 1 setup, it doesn't give me the option to use it as there is no 'use' box and i can't delete it from the 'i forgot pin' box as i then can't close the settings window, it just beeps at me.

---------- Post added at 13:51 ---------- Previous post was at 13:35 ----------

This is by far the worst build for me so far i just can't do anything with regard to my user account.

1. explorer.exe error when closing down.
2. Can't login with a 4 digit pin.
3. Can't delete my old 4 digit pin.
4. If i try option 3 from the old control panel i get a window popup asking me to re enter my password, and i do and it keeps asking me to re enter the bloody thing over and over again.
5. I wanted to verify my account on this pc and the above happens!

Atleast the normal windows experience works so that is something, but i understand i am using preview software so things like this are expected but they seem to be causing more little problems with each build, i can't see this being ready for mid July.

4.

Bios update fixed it. It was an old bios but I am a believer in if it isn't broken do not fix it. Guess something was broken :)

Glad you sorted it.

Another problem for me, when i deleted a different user account while trying to fix the PIN problem it also deleted all my icon settings for my start menu on the main account so had to add them all in again.

Yep - just appeared on my PC, and I've reserved my upgrade.

I'll do the same on my lad's laptop.

What version preview are others on? I'm still on 10074, there have been 5 attempts to upgrade but each fail. The UK version on MS site still shows 10074 as latest build.

that is the most recent Slow Ring release. If you want to go to 10130 you will need to set yourself on the Fast ring

10130 is the latest on the fast ring, you should clean install the next one, possibly another build later this week.

An app that tells you when something is available to download? Doesn't sound much like a "reservation"...:dozey:

Good question. The upgrade path from Win 7/8 to 10 is clear but less so from the Insider Preview to RTM. I upgraded from a retail activated copy of Win 8 to the Win 10 TP but now am a bit confused on if I have to go back to go forward :(

If you're running Windows 10 Preview today, you will be updated to final release automatically. More upgrade details: http://www.zdnet.com/article/get-win...de-in-history/

The MS guy tweeted me.

@GabeAul Now that Windows 7 and 8.1 users can reserve their copies of Win10 how do Win 10 insiders reserve theirs?

@Snoopzster No need, you were first in line the moment you installed your preview build.

So there's a line now?

I guess that must be what you "reserve" a place in. But then again, having to queue to install Windows seems a bit... odd...

any particular reason for the arguing of semantics ?

from the link Dave42 posted

Quote:

On or before that date, Windows Insiders will get a Preview build that will become the Current Branch. Think of this as the replacement for what would previously have been a Release Candidate. They will automatically be upgraded the the release version when it is available.

Anyone running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has the option to reserve their place in the Windows 10 upgrade queue, starting today. Those upgrades will begin rolling out in late July and early August, staggered to reduce the load.
so it is pretty clear RC will roll out to those on the insider preview build which in turn will be upgraded to the release version quite simple no need to argue whether there is a queue or not

Those who reserve will get the upgrade as it rolls out those who do not set it up when its available all seems pretty simple to understand. How M$ have worded it is irrelevant :)

Not everyone keeps a constant eye on IT developments. It's just a mechanism to alert all relevant users that it is coming soon.

Will us who have reserved the update get it before the launch date or will we all be battling for bandwith which will slow down the MS Servers on launch date?
