14 left, 7 of which are live in hd on the BBC. If they don't launch before Monaco it'll be 7 from 13. If football is the driver and we don't see a launch until August then we won't see the benefit until Singapore in September, at which point there will be 6 rounds left, 3 already available fta.

Even relative to how many rounds are left, it's not that great for this year unless they get a move on.

As an aside I was expecting some coverage of the in-season testing, and am surprised to see that there doesn't appear to be any - bit of a shame given there are 5 reserve drivers taking part and Merc are testing "solutions" to the noise "problem".

If these dates are true it does beggar belief on why customers should have to wait till early 2015 to get some of these channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Is it a case of the contracts are agreed but not signed yet until a specific date in the summer which only allows access to the channels then? That could be the only logical reason.

If VM have access to the channels now but are only adding them in 8 months time it beggars belief!

Morning all btw!

Why have you assumed that the delay is down to Virgin Media?

Surely it's equally likely to be Sky dictating when the channels can be broadcast by Virgin Media?

Who's to say its VM withholding them? maybe its Sky who are withholding the launch to 2015 of course its all speculation till VM tell us officially when SS News HD & Sky News HD will launch

Virgin has nothing to gain from "witholding" them so why would it? Presumably the channels will launch from a mutually-agreed date.

Taken from Dspy.

Turner to launch UK FTA channel

broadcastnow.co.uk is reporting that Turner Broadcasting is to launch its first FTA UK 24hr channel TruTV on Freeview, freesat and You View this summer. Distribution with Sky and Virgin is expected to be revealed shortly.

H'mm, it does seem to me that we can't have it both ways. We moan about not hearing about things that are happening until they are upon us, and we criticise when we get information about developments that are coming over a longer period.

There could be several reasons for the delay, including the cost impact on the first financial year of the deal.

The 2015 date has not yet been officially confirmed yet anyway, so too early to jump to conclusions.[/QUOTE]

So its looks like there could be a wait and one suspects also a price rise to pay for these extra channels will be forthcoming at some point in the future.

If you use the dates above and substitute 2010 for 2014 I think you will have a realistic time frame of these new channels launching.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

It's pretty clear to me that VM have released the news now about SKY channels despite a long lead time for launch. I see two reasons:-

1. The impact on the valuation of VM stock (far more important than the impact on VM forum members - remember the average member of the public are not as obsessive as us about VM channel launches, yet investors are)

2. Customer Retention - If customers call up to cancel saying they wish to move to Sky due to HD sport they can at least say these are definitely coming to VM in the future.

The first point I think is the key. I'm sure if VM could launch them now they would, I imagine sky are holding off as long as possible.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

For various reasons, I was amazed that Sky Atlantic was not included in the announcement.

After doing some digging, a little birdie tells me that, apparently, Sky Atlantic was not included in the new carriage deal as Sky are still insisting on the £1.12 per month per subscriber for it.

LG/VM are not prepared to pay this, so it's still stalemate.

Or maybe VM are happy to take them from when most people want the Sky Sports channels (many customers cancel over the summer) and thus save some money on carriage costs? As you say, any unhappy customers can be appeased by point 2 and the SD versions are still available.

In a way, this was one of the reasons why there was no rush for VM to get BT Sport from day one.

After doing some digging, a little birdie tells me that, apparently, Sky Atlantic was not included in the new carriage deal as Sky are still insisting on the £1.12 per month per subscriber for it.

LG/VM are not prepared to pay this, so it's still stalemate.

Speaking personally, and considering what I already pay Virgin Media monthly as a VIP 120 customer, that figure doesn't seem outrageous for a channel many of us want. I suspect others will disagree.

Given that our next price rise is likely to be £3 or £4 then it does not seem that much but one suspects Sky are asking much more then the amount mentioned.

If it were to be included in any of the core TV packages, then it would be per subscriber to those packages, rather than those who want it within those subscriptions

So I can see Virgin Media would be looking at the current viewing figures that it gets out of Sky's own subscriber base and extrapolating that into VM's TV base.

At first glance, it does sound like they are arguing over pennies, but multiply this recurring monthly cost by the number of VM subscribers who would be entitled to this channel (M+ and above??) and it soon adds up to a considerable sum.

Also, bear in mind that most channel operators only receive pennies per subscriber per month from VM (and some receive nothing or even pay to be on the platform).

Despite this, many need these aggregated pennies to survive as they could not survive on advertising alone. The closure of Current TV is an example of this and Sky obtain much more revenue from subscriptions than they do through advertising.

Edit 1: Also, bear in mind that VM has to charge their customers VAT, so any charges are inflated by 20%.

Edit 2: Forgot to say, I also asked about Baby TV going from standalone to XL. This is the second time that this rumour has been mooted, again no-one has heard anything about this.

In a way, this was one of the reasons why there was no rush for VM to get BT Sport from day one.

I don't quite agree with all of this. If all you are interested in Premier League football hence canceling in the summer then you'll probably only be interested in SS1 & SS2 any as it's not on the other channels.

The main draw over summer is cricket, F1, tennis and golf. Aside from cricket (which is pretty much exclusive now to SS2) if you follow these sports you are the target market for SS3 & SS4 in the summer months.

It would favour VM to have these channels now which is why I doubt it is VMs pref to delay.

However I note VM are offering the whole collection for half price for 3 months at the month. Does does throw out a few questions. Maybe SKY support which promotional pricing to VM in order to mutually get in more business but retain HD to have a USP this summer. They did it last year and I assume that was in the run up to BT sport launching in order ti take away momentum.

Could VM not add Atlantic as a premium option like movies or sports? Then those that want it can have it and fund it and those that don't don't have to pay for it.It will be a win win, Sky get the money from VM subscribers and VM get to offer the channel to its customers.

Maybe more premier league matches will be on sky sports 3 or 4 next season, so BT and talk talk customers can't view it, also a lot of champions league football is on 3 and also $ly are advertising lots of international football for next season as well, me i have full sky and I don't watch Atlantic, but I'd come back to VM if they could add 3d to the new HD acquisitions.

Sky have it in their basic package to attract customers Dave but to other providers they class it as a premium channel thus that's why they want a hefty premium for it.

Yes, and that's despite the media reports last year that Sky and Virgin were coming closer on a deal regarding Sky Atlantic and a sense of 'realism' was now entering the debate.

So much for that, then.

I hope that VM refused to carry Sky Bravo as a response to this. I can't see this as being a channel anyone with taste would frequent anyway.

I am inclined to agree with you that Sky Atlantic is a basics channel. If they class Sky Atlantic as a premium channel, their standards are slipping. It's very much like Sky 1 but with one or two good quality programmes thrown in over the course of an average week. Much of the rest I wouldn't bother to watch.

Possibly, but I would remind you that Sirius (at DS) was the catalyst for all this when his DVB-C2 TV revealed that the three channels were testing. Judging by similar revelations by people with these or DVB-C TVs previously, Virgin do not have a track record of leaving channels testing for prolonged periods before launch. Typically if they were to launch in August, they'd start testing in late July, not now.

My uneducated guess would be that given we've learned there is to be no additional charge, they will appear (the 3, not the other 2) before the next Sky exclusive F1 race. I don't know when that is, I don't follow it myself.

http://advanced-television.com/2014/...g-trutv-in-uk/ Oh, God, yet another reality channel!

Turner Broadcasting will launch its first free-to-air TV channel in the UK this summer – general entertainment network TruTV.

The 24-hour channel will air on an unconfirmed slot on the Freeview, Freesat and YouView platforms. Distribution deals with Sky and Virgin Media are expected to be revealed shortly.

TruTV is viewed in 93 million homes in the US and features an array of unscripted programming, including Container Wars, Fear Factor and Jokers.

The channel is expected to commission UK shows to bolster its existing output, as well as buy up shows from distributors including Endemol and Zodiak Rights.

Turner UK general manager Anthony Lukom said that the launch would expand the broadcaster’s reach to 26 million UK homes. “TruTV shows real-life comedy featuring incredible characters in real-life situations, a formula that is enjoying ever-increasing popularity worldwide,” he added.

I'm guessing Sky won't let them do this, or they want a fixed price for the whole subscriber base, not just those taking Sky Atlantic which would make it harder to set a price.

NTL did used to do it with Sky One though but that was probably on different terms.

Why is there so much pressure for VM to have Atlantic. From what l have heard from mates who have Sky, Atlantic is crap. And they have told me that it is not worth it, and have the progs several weeks later.

Just an insight, IF true, a VM sales rep l met at Tesco the other day has told me that, you CAN get Atlantic from your Tivo box if you SEARCH for it - from the sales rep mouth.

I told him about an agreement between Sky and VM. And then when he told me about Atlantic.

Just trying to make a sale by lying through his teeth.

Mate of mine with freeview was told by a sales agent that when 4G comes on line in his area he will lose all his channels so he may as well sign up with sky before it happens.

He's not too knowledgeable on the subject but, luckily, he spoke to me before making a commitment.

Thats because its the last matchday of the season and thus they are allowed to show more then one match at the same time on different SS channels.

Mmm I thought the ruling was this at they couldn't withhold ss1&2 and that a reasonable amount of premier league football should be on 1&2 if they where the channels actually for sale, I'm sure it left enough vagueness to be exploited if $ly really wanted too...

JustaBloke 15-05-2014 09:48

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

I think Den is nearly right. The ruling stated something like that the use of these channels shouldn't change from how they were before the ruling.

As there were last day multiple matches before, there can be after. Also there are usually one or two weekends at the beginning of the season when, due to clashes with summer sports (mainly cricket and golf) the EPL game gets shunted to SS3. I remember the BT Vision boys being up in arms about that just after the judgement. But as it had always happened, it was able to continue.

Yes, once it's fully integrated with the VM network. As an aside it's a tiny operation with only 3,700 TV customers and 6,000 customers in total. It goes past 45,000 houses so the opportunity is there to push customer numbers up on the back of Virgin's national brand and advertising.

I'm looking forward to the new Sports HD channels. With the F1 HD channel in mind and the Monaco Grand Prix coming up next week, I thought maybe Virgin saw this as a potential showcase for the F1HD channel for such a glitzy, showbizz circuit. Maybe I'm just hoping though :-)

Thanks Den:) I finally took the time to register and say hi to everyone. This forum has really made my working day, specially with all the BT Sport Fiasco last season...was comedy gold.

I am a bit of a HD snob, even though I don't watch much sport on Sports 3 & 4, it's always nice to have the HD version. I'm really looking forward to F1HD, and hopefully Virgin can sort out something with Universal. The SD channel is pretty fuzzy.

Im very much a HD snob as well so can understand where you are coming from there, I also believe 3 & 4 in SD is sometimes unwatchable and when you compare it to BT SD there is a definate noticeable difference. Hope we do see it soon but if i am betting man (which funny enough I am :) ) I think it will be August. Thankfullya s someone has stated teh cricket will mostly be on skysports 2 but i wonder if the county and one day cup will fall onto 3 as it sometimes did last year

welcome :)

haha yes the bt sport channel launch on VM was comedy gold. great description for it. BomberAF was on top form around that time before the legend disappeared never to be heard from before.

i still re-read the chaos when it launched on that fateful day with no warning whatsoever. quality read.

but yes welcome and lets hope something comes to virgin media soon....

I still hear the old "I can't tell the difference between HD and SD". These people are crazy lol.

I watch everything possible in HD, apart from F1 (at the moment ;) ) and Bates Motel on Universal. The HD version is the channel I'm hoping VM can secure next.

I like Game of Thrones, and a few other programmes look good on Atlantic, but if VM can't agree a deal, I'm fine with that.

Thanks mate,

I was constantly hitting the F5 button whilst I was supposed to be working. It was brilliant.

Bomber is definitely a legend, but I won't mention any hat eating.... :D

Hi MB,

I take it, this is gearing up for the new Sports HD channels?

2-3 weeks? That's a bummer, was hoping to watch the Monaco Grand Prix next weekend in beautiful HD :D

MUTV in HD please

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

MUTV doesn't broadcast on any platform in HD so it isn't going to launch on VM unless VM subsidise it.

---------- Post added at 14:42 ---------- Previous post was at 14:40 ----------

Infact in the entire world I think there is only Benfica football club that has a HD channel, and they do show other matches and sporting events as well to subsidise that.

a516: BBC to launch BBC Red Button 2 in June?

The extra red button stream is permitted to be on air by Ofcom from 16th June to until August 4th.

MUTV HD, now that is a thought lol

Not sure there is enough coverage to make it feasible, but MUFC should be able to afford the tech needed to do it. Maybe it's a cost they don't want to make.

If the TV rights were sold like they are in Spain and MUTV could show all of the games, then I'm sure they would definitely broadcast in HD.

DS Forum is reporting that the new Sky Sports HD Channels are testing.

Media Boy HQ thinks they will launch by mid June.

On the new Sports Channels numbers I also think it will be:

Plan A)
•519. Sky Sports 3 HD
•520. Sky Sports 4 HD
•521. Sky Sports News HD
•522. Sky Sports F1 HD
•523. EuroSport
•524. EuroSport HD

Or plan B)
•501. Sky Sports 1
•502. Sky Sports 2
•503. Sky Sports 3
•504. Sky Sports 4
•506. Sky Sports F1
•508. Sky Sports News
•511. Sky Sports 1 HD
•512. Sky Sports 2 HD
•513. Sky Sports 3 HD
•514. Sky Sports 4 HD
•516. Sky Sports F1 HD
•518. Sky Sports News HD

Plan B seems better organised, VM probably won't go for that then! :D

That's a fair point. (I must also stress that that this was only conjecture on my part, I haven't been told anything to this effect by my VM contact/s).

I concur with your view in this instance.

http://advanced-television.com/2014/...g-trutv-in-uk/ Oh, God, yet another reality channel!

When Freeview first started, a channel placeholder called CBM appeared. This channel never came to fruition and was rumoured to consist of elements of TCM, Cartoon Network and Bloomberg. Looks like this could be another attempt by Turner to get back into the FTA market. I say 'get back' as, like many of us, the former head of Turner hated Sky and, despite the monetary loss, refused to join the Sky Multichannels package. For many, many years Cartoon Network and TNT were broadcast FTA.

Oh, I didn't know that! They were one of the first new digital channels on Sky Digital in 1998. When did they become on line only?

Manchester United TV launch on Sky in 1998 and is broadcasting on Virgin Channel 528 but is now know as MUTV.

Manchester City TV is an online only channel.

It's Monaco 22-25th May (it's the next round as it happens) so that would mean a launch very soon.

few weeks.

But it took Virgin Media NINE Months to launch channels now known as 'Eden +1' and 'Good Food +1' to launch on NTL areas back in 2007/2008.
