Strange - most reasonable TVs upscale SD.

It's not quite as good as HD, but not crap (imho).

True, my TV (Sharp Aquos) does a great job of upscaling but I find Universal (& +1) very blocky and smeary in dark scenes

I agree, although I personally wouldn't say "need" currently watching Newcastle Sunderland in sd because I won't pay the premium fee, and it's perfectly good enough for me, but I did choose to watch the BBC's coverage of the Grand Prix this morning solely because it was in hd.

If and when the channels listed are added then I don't care about the "are we paying for it" argument, the hd line up on Virgin will be absolutely superb.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Plus I tend to record lots of shows (as they are on same time as football, or my bedtime)

So record the standard version, never overly concerned about HD version (oft using plus 1s).

that said...maybe it is because you need HD for sport to distract you from the game (marvel at the image), whilst the shows have a story I focus on

Yes, i used the royal "need". One doesn't actually "need" Hd for sport, but one does like it :D

Watching the FA Cup game on ITV AD just now and the picture is poor IMO. It's not being shown in the STV region or would have it on STV HD

The problem is more the low bitrates than the actual resolution.

Doesn't help too with channels like Viva where they take old 4:3 NTSC programmes, convert them into PAL, blow up the picture to somewhere in the middle of 4:3 and 16:11 (losing the top and bottom) and then bung them out on a really low bitrate channel. Impossible to watch on a big screen telly with the bad colour, blurred picture and terrible pixellation.

paultrademark 15-04-2013 11:56

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Spot on, it's not every channel but some are definitely worse than others. ITV SD channels seem particularly bad, thankfully we now have the HD versions of 2/3/4.

Yes, that will be the low bit-rate on the channels.

You'll notice more in dark scenes, scenes with a lot of one colour and fast moving scenes.

Thats right; Universal and the +1 are the only channels I watch where it is noticable (it's also bad on the 5USA/5* channels as well but I don't watch anything on them presently)

Virgin Media takeover by Liberty Global approved in EU

The European Commission (EC) has confirmed that its antitrust authority found no competition concerns with the transaction.

The authority noted that the companies' cable networks operate in different countries, noting that the national licensing of TV content for different areas meant that the deal would not restrict competition.

I know it probably wont be useful to most but the other week my nan asked me to make her a channel list as she was getting confused all the time, so this might help. It doesnt have a lot of channels, just the main channels (as it was kind of only designed for her) and it lists the HD channels only (except for BBC One and where there is no HD counterpart) but may aswell share it, some may find it useful.

Since the takeover of VM is now approved to go ahead, management must be giving pep talks to the VM staff about the potential future direction of the company or will do soon. Products (channels) which may be offered in the future, perhaps even owning channels once again or producing original content? The combined companies are certainly big enough to take this direction if they wish?

Sky I believe have to produce a certain number of hours of original content to satisfy the authorities, perhaps this may applied to the new VM company. It must be hitting the critical mass to perhaps have the same rules applied or is this only relent to channel owners?

Has anyone heard anything, Mediaboy perhaps?

Hopefully we will get TVA & MRS rights for Sky channels when they renew the Sky premium HD deal, then we'll have another 21 channels on mobile.

Plus once the Liberty deal goes through the CBS channels & Horror shouldn't be too far behind.

I personally like the TVA app reviews where supposedly on Sky Go you can watch every channel you can on your TV, so they're all leaving Virgin.

Albeit they were last week as the update has since ballsed everything up...

Virgin TVA iOS 40

And the new payTV streaming service champion...

Sky Go is really poor in the Documentary genre , there's been many complaints on the Sky help forum regarding this in fact they only added a Documentary genre when they added C&I recently , I suppose Nat Geo/Wild and History are distinct possibilities on tablet/smartphone considering BSKYB has a part share in them , being honest I don't use Sky Go that much but generally when I do it's been when I'm away and I tend to mostly watch Sport live or shows/movies On Demand via my ipad , the new download facility is also useful if there's no Internet were your travelling.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Although not directly connected to TV Anywhere, and I only know about this because of the website, it looks like Virgin Movies rentals will be offering mobile device options this year

http://onlinemovies.virginmedia.com/Help/#pageId6011

Quote:

How do I find out which films are available to watch on my mobile or tablet?

You’ll be able to see which devices you can watch your film on the Film page, My Basket, Checkout and My Rentals. At the moment, the films are only available on PC/Mac but we’re looking to expand onto mobiles and tablets later this year.

To check which films are available on PC/Mac, Android or iOS devices please select your film and go the film page. There, you will see icons for PC/Mac, Android or iOS, highlighting which devices you can watch your film on.

Hm, thanks for links, etc. Looked at the films and most of them I wouldn't watch 10 seconds of. Don't think I will waste £2.50 a month. Not until a decent movie I fancy comes on.

to be fair for some newish films not bad deal.

Would agree older films it dont represent value you better off getting DVD/bluray watching heart consent.

I used it on freebie watch films not watched even went out bought one due enjoyment.

However what put me off from signing up was its system is poor.

It was unable to cope with demand on the freebie month resently. God knows what those who subscribed went through unless they was on seperate server.

Ended up watching films after midnight as it kept freezing.

Likely due to those films was most popular mind but hardly was helping encouraging people to sign up.

S4C putting up for tenders assuming trying breakaway to resume a channel seperate from bbc. Looks in meantime S4C will cease broadcasting.
