Never say never. SKY seems to have hit their ceiling at the moment in terms of attracting customer numbers. Whilst they can continue to up sell their customer base products such as HD or the 2TB box, nothing would bring in more revenue than agreeing carriage deals with Virgin and BT.

I can’t see SKY giving up SKY Sports 3 & 4 in HD unless they are forced too. SKY Atlantic however could be up for grabs. Someone did post a link to an article last month which showed SKY may turn to wholesaling the channel soon.

I suppose the good thing is that people are starting to see a bit of value before the next price increase is implemented. It looks like Virgin are listening to their customers, and reacting accordingly. It’s exciting times for you guys.

Oh I see. I thought they planned to run more episodes.

Sky have announced a major new commitment to original British drama.

Plenty of new programming coming to SKY 1, SKY Arts and SKY Living to look forward too.

Not judging by that schedule. It's probably their last ditch attempt to get people to sign up to Sky Atlantic via the satellite system before the channel goes wholesale.

Well done Virgin with these new channels. They are filling in the blanks. I for one would rather wait and not pay sky high prices, no pun intended. Some people may have money to throw at HD channels but we don't and appreciate them being available on the XL package. Keep up the good work Media Boy.:)

I agree.

SKY Atlantic has been up and running now for 2 years. I can't see them getting much more mileage out of it in terms of an exclusive unique selling point. If people haven't left their current provider for the channel by now, they never will.

Just looking at Premier Sports website as they have the NHL rights for the current season and came across this which i'm pretty sure has been added recently, anybody know anything regarding how likely it is we could see PS on VM anytime soon and possibly on XL?

Q: I have Virgin and can’t get Premier Sports? Why should I be unable to watch all the games?

A: Negotiations are ongoing with Virgin and it is hoped progress will be made over the next few weeks. It is important you contact Virgin and let them know you wish our channel to be added.

That might be from last year. Premier Sports had been in prolonged discussions with Virgin but talks broke down. Apparently Premier Sports wanted to be in the XL package whilst Virgin wanted them as a stand alone subscription channel.

The following conversation took place on Facebook 2 days ago between a Virgin customer and Premier Sports.

Virgin customer:-

"Re: Virgin - I "pestered" them, and they said you guys were not willing to be a normal pay channel like most others, but wanted to be included in the XL package. If that's the case, you guys need to start living in the real world and just agree with their terms. You're missing my £10 pm as well as many others by being dicks"

Premier Sports:-

"Happy to be any channel package on Virgin but ask them about the costs to us for providing them with a service."

Here is the latest I have - nothing.

But:

Disney Movie Channel HD (I forgot it real name) was listed on Virgin Media.com yesterday.

Virgin Media has sign an new deal with NBC Universal so Universal HD and Style Network may launch in Virgin in the next few months - but no channels launches are plans as far as I know of tonight.

No news update since August 2012 on the missing ITV HD Channels launching.

What family of channels does E! come under? E! HD has become my wifes favourite channel. E! HD would certainly add something to female Virgin customers. Well only those who are wrapped up in American reality pish like my wife!

Very true.

With recent rumours that BT Vision may buy Boxnation, I wonder if they are eyeing up Premier Sports too? Unless Premier Sports launches on other platforms, I can't see the channel growing it's subscription base too much further.

Thanks the the link Chad. It's possible it's an old quote but I did read that same page a couple of days ago and there was no sign of that quote and infact they've added another line to it since I looked a few hours ago just noting VM's customers frustrations about missing out on some NHL games this year.

Also found this on Facebook from 6 hours ago when someone asked them about a possible VM deal "I believe we are moving in the right direction but still need everyone who wants us to contact them and request the channel." This at least makes it sound like there are some talks going on but i'm certainly not going to hold my breath when it comes to seeing PS on VM anytime soon.

Any chance of Discovery Science HD launching? Also is there any news on ITV finally getting Dolby Digital?

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Personally I'd only ever watch the boxing on Premier Sports however for fans of NASCAR, NHL and Conference football the channel is a must. If Virgin and Premier could agree to get the channel into the XL package, that would be a great bonus for sports fans.

Keep us posted if you find out if any further progress is made. I'm always interested in sports rights, and sports channels, regardless of the TV platform or provider.

That unlikey to happen as Disney Cinemagic was set up as an Add on Channel with Disney moves the rest to the XL Pack back in 2006 - It was the 1st deal Virgin Media (Then called NTL Telewest) sign.

But Disney Channel HD, Disney Junior + and Disney XD HD may launch in the XL pack.

I was only on about it being listed on Virgin Media.com on Wednesday - that all.

But if it do launch we may also get Disney Cinemagic +1 - but the Disney Cinemagic channels will only for Virgin Media viewers who pays £5 per month for Disney Cinemagic or FREE with all of Sky Movies.

No most SD channels do too, but TVs and STBs can stretch 4:3 on SD Channels if they've been set to do so.

However on HD Channels they won't stretch as the channel is always 16:9 so has black bars insterted to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio correct.

I think the new owners will keep the Football rights until their deal runs out.

But we may see the following:

-Absolute Radio becoming Planet Rock (AM 1215) on Virgin Channel 915.
-Planet Rock becoming Kerrang Radio on Virgin Channel 924.
-Absolute 80s becoming Heat Radio on Virgin Channel 951.
-Absolute Classic Rock becoming Smash Hits Radio on Virgin Channel 952.

I'm in two minds. Part of me thinks that the current xl package is being devalued by channel movements and may be further undermined by whatever happens with ESPN and Bt sports, meaning that things must be coming soon to put this right. The other part of me thinks that Bt vision is basically freeview, plus a few channels and an on demand library, and that Virgin hope to compete against that by beefing up their m+ offering but they might not have considered the implications for customers already on the higher tiers. We'll see, certainly be interesting.

Many still do and there's a very noticeable difference between those correctly switching to 4:3 and those with stretch-vision. TCM2 appears to be using 4:3 in a 4:3 frame but with the widescreen flag set on. This gives the impression that the High Chaparral ranch is occupied by several overweight leprechauns with American accents.

Probably jumping the gun a little there MB but I wouldn't be too surprised at Bauer merging Absolute Radio and Planet Rock under the Planet Rock name if their bid is successful. It would also make sense to then use the Planet Rock network to broadcast Kerrang nationally. As for the other Absolute brands, Classic Rock and 60's, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s brands, they don't really match up with existing Bauer brands (and many aren't actually carried on VM). It's difficult to predict what Bauer would do with these.

VM doesn't have a good track record for carrying the Bauer Radio brands. Many originally carried by NTL were dropped after the merger with Telewest.

I must admit, I was not much of a fan of him and Baddiel, but I think his Saturday show is excellent (Alas I can only listen to it live every other weekend due to work). I have found, over the the years that, Alan Cochrane is incredibly under-rated as a comidian and brings lots to show too, as does Emily Dean. Having said that, the speed and witiness of Frank Skinner's replies to their random thoughts really shows he is on another comedic level to his co-hosts. Surely any new owners would keep him on:erm:

Maybe, if Netflix is coming (still a question mark over that), it has been delayed because of the improoved version of the app. I know this was May last year, but it presumably has to be tweaked for the VM Tivo, and may even be added with the HD screens update?

http://www.techofthehub.com/2012/05/...on-review.html

TBH, I don't think it's worth hanging around for Tivo if you really want Netflix, as there are several streamers in the £60-80 price range that will do Netflix at 1080p resolution and DD 5.1 audio. Those streamers also have the advantage of being able to be used with services such as Unblockus, which I suspect will be impossible with Netflix on Tivo.

Prices and packages from Virgin and SKY can vary depending on what you want, and what you need. In terms of their top end offerings, there isn't much difference at all.

The VIP collection from Virgin is currently £113.99 per month (including phone line)

The SKY equivalent is £113.00 per month:

SKY World - £65.75
Multiroom - £10.25
ESPN - £10.00
SKY broadband unlimited - £7.50
SKY line rental - £14.50
SKY talk anytime - £5.00

99p is all that seperates both in terms of monthly cost. It then comes down to personal preference. Virgin have the fastest broadband and best PVR. SKY have the best channel line-up and best TV on the go service.

I have just joined SKY on a 12 month half price deal. Will I still be with SKY in 12 months time, it all depends on what BT and Virgin are doing by then.

£83 for 6 months then £103 that's for sports, movies 24/7 free calls and 15mb broadband. Cracking deal imho and not one I had to fight for it was just given. This is always the biggest thread on this forum so the channels people don't get on VM is clearly an issue(even though most will profess its not) for most people. With that in mind give Sky a chance for in most cases I'm guessing, not to dissimilar cost you get a whole lot more.

I thought there was an hd charge on sky, or have you lumped that in with the sky world price?

No Chad has included it in the Sky World price , it's still possible to have Sky World at £55.50 without the further £10.25 HD charge.

This is always the biggest thread on this forum so the channels people don't get on VM is clearly an issue(even though most will profess its not) for most people. With that in mind give Sky a chance for in most cases I'm guessing, not to dissimilar cost you get a whole lot more.

Yes it's true, channels are an issue, but less so now. The main problem is Sky Atlantic and the additional HD channels we have been hankering after.

But really, most of the channels we don't get are not worth having. I am not impressed simply by the number of channels Sky has.

I have seen both systems in action and as my daughter has Sky (reluctantly, because she lives in a non-cabled area), I am up to date with what they currently offer.

VM is still for me, but things may change over time. BT is interesting, but they have a long way to go before they tempt me.

Sky might come up with the goods as far as I am concerned in the future, but they are not there yet. And if the next TIVO lets you store unlimited recordings in the cloud, it will take a lot to tempt me to any other system! My 1TB TIVO box is certainly fantastic, but it varies between being 83%-91% full. It's a constant battle to keep it down now and I cannot record as much HD as I would like.

The more you get, the more you want, I guess.

I found that Sky would have been very slightly cheaper than Virgin for me, but TiVo is a big selling point, but even more importantly Virgin's internet is so much better than Sky's for my area.

My Sky box might not be as good as the TiVo but my Sky box gets all the channels most people on here would like. Personally I didn't see what the big deal was with the TiVo when I had one, but each to their own.

The VIP collection from Virgin is currently £113.99 per month (including phone line)

The SKY equivalent is £113.00 per month:

SKY World - £65.75
Multiroom - £10.25
ESPN - £10.00
SKY broadband unlimited - £7.50
SKY line rental - £14.50
SKY talk anytime - £5.00

Thanks Chad, that's very interesting. I have never checked that tariff (it's far too expensive for me.) You ar eright about the prefrences and (even if I was allowed Sky)VM is still right for me still. It's always nice to have some balance though:). Am looking forward to see what is on offer from all providers in 6 months or so!!

It was not Virgin Media who drop them.

It was Bauer Radio who drop them from Digital TV (Sky and NTL) due to costs.

I always find the never ending demand for Sky Atlantic a bit of a joke has anyone ever looked at the show line up on that channel today listings

http://theguardiandev.tvgenius.net/t...ky-atlantic-hd

it is a re hash of Sky 1 and Sky Living ? and TBH with the new and exclusive shows they have do you see Sky parting with it any time soon ?
Anyone seen Blue Bloods , Boardwalk empire on any other channels ?
