Anyone noticed that if and when a program crashes, Task Manager is useless at killing it?
it just sits there saying 'not responding' I have to hard reboot and start again usually. |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Windows Blue poised to become Windows 8.1
The Windows Blue operating system update is likely to be named "Windows 8.1" when it arrives this summer, according to sources by Mary Jo Foley | April 2, 2013 6:33 AM PDT Microsoft officials supposedly have decided on the final name for Windows Blue. The final decision, one of my sources told me, is that it will be Windows 8.1. The client version of Blue, codenamed Windows Blue, is a refresh of Windows 8. It is expected to be released to manufacturing around August of this year. As I've blogged a few times, Microsoft is planning to position Blue as part of the Windows 8 wave, not as Windows 9. On Twitter this morning Roman L. (a k a @AngelWZR) posted a screen shot of what appears to be a build of Windows Blue that postdates the one that leaked a week ago. The week-ago Blue build was 9364; the new one is 9375. It is labeled in AngelWZR's screen shot as "Windows 8.1 Pro." "Well maybe that's not an April Fools' joke," AngelWZR tweeted. My Blue source said that the top-level branding will be "Windows 8" when Microsoft releases the 8.1 update -- similar to the way that Microsoft's Windows Phone officials talked about the "Mango" (Windows Phone 7.5) release as part of the Windows Phone 7 family. My tipster also says that Microsoft plans to refer to the Blue update for Windows RT as "Windows RT 8.1." There's no word as to what, if anything, Microsoft plans to charge existing Windows 8 and Windows RT customers for Blue. Microsoft executives like Windows Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller have said repeatedly that Microsoft envisions Windows 8 as something more than a one-season wonder. Reller has said the company considers Windows 8 a product "of multiple selling seasons." So it makes sense that Blue would be christened Windows 8.X, not Windows 9. If it pans out that Microsoft has, indeed, opted for Blue to be named 8.1 -- rather than 8.5 or 8.7 -- I wouldn't be surprised to see the expected next couple of annual Windows client refreshes to also have an 8.X name when they roll out over the next few years. Microsoft officials are not commenting about Blue, beyond acknowledging that the code name refers to the next wave of products from the company. http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57...e-windows-8.1/ |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Makes sense, I'd expect a full number version every two years.
|
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
they are emulating Mac trying to release refreshes more frequently for less cost. They are hoping this combats piracy as well as totally changing the business model.
Big problem is Mac and Linus specially Ubuntu have stolen all the good names so what the best MS can do? 8.1 pitiful . Atleast when we had code names like Whistler or Vienna if gave it a bit of sparkle lol Were is WINFS gone whooft gone in a puff of logic lol |

As for Apple, for a long time, they've had a slightly screwy version numbering system. They've been essentially doing "point" releases of OSX (with is actually OS10) since 2001. Still, you are right, naming OS releases after wild cats, birds, or desserts (to bring another Linux based OS, Android, into it) is far more interesting than version numbers. |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
surely all what matters is if it is a good os not the name

Hi, had a new desktop bought for me for my birthday with windows 8 installed. Got one problem that I cant seem to get around. When I reboot I get " configuring windows features" which in itself isnt a problem but it takes ages. And when I mean ages it takes around 30 minutes before I am back in the system. It isnt windows update because I have turned that off.
|
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
One thing to bear considering is that, MS may go for a 'paid upgrade to Windows 8.1'
That'll be interesting. No more Service Packs, just Paid updates. |

Windows Keeps Getting Better
http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/b...medium=twitter good now we know windows 8.1 to be free |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
It should be pushed as a support pack via windows update, as opposed to visiting the Windows Store!

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Well i am running windows 8 only because i have to. But i have start is back to give me the start button back and have hidden the Metro crap away. It now looks and perform the same as windows 7 which tells me all they did was remove the start button and remove some of the nice graphical extras that you get with windows 7. I am willing to bet that they do not bring back the the original start button and instead bring something back they call the start button. What they will do then is say they have so they can sell a few more copies before it is consigned to the same place vista was. I hope that they actually see sense but i am expecting them to not to. Such a shame as Microsoft was going in the right direction with windows 7 and now they have done a massive U turn.
I like this bit that was posted in reply to there blog above. Quote:

Anyone else having trouble using BBC iPlayer desktop on Windows 8? Have uninstalled it, installed it. Same with Adobe AIR, and tried their FAQ's. No joy. Tried using it in compatibility mode for Windows XP, Vista and 7. No luck. So am now wondering if it is something I am doing wrong or if anyone else was having the same trouble.

Here are the latest rumours for Windows 8.1.
Start button has returned with the icon the same as the charms icon. MS will allow users to swap the start screen with an application list when the button is accessed. (i really hope this is true) You can use your desktop wallpaper on the start screen. You will be able to boot directly to the Desktop. http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8...looks-familiar http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/co...utton-and-more |

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Don't really get the hatred for it anymore, if I want to launch a program I go to start screen, start typing, press enter and I'm back to the desktop.
Looking forward to 50/50 snap for metro though. |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
I never use the start screen other than when it first pops up, so i am looking forward to boot to desktop and the ability to have the start screen 'apps list' as default when the start button is pressed as i don't want to install any other crap to make it like windows 7.
I expect sales will increase once 8.1 is released. |

I don't like to use addons, so i am hoping for a boot to desktop and i am looking forward to a real start button and i will be happy if i can make it go to a default apps start screen with the same background as i currently use on my desktop to make it look seamless.

So its defo an internet explorer issue. Installed "start8" app, absolutely brilliant. It means I have the start menu back, AND it starts up in desktop mode, so no faffing around. BUT I get the greater speed. It now switches on and within a minute you can use the internet. It used to take about 2/3 mins on Windows 7 to start up. |

How to Correctly Install Windows 8.1 Preview
Separate ISOs will also be offered for those who wish to set up a dual-boot configuration and install Windows 8.1 Preview on a different partition. Here’s what Microsoft says about it. “There are two ways to install Windows 8.1 Preview: through the Windows Store of through the ISO,” the company wrote. “If you’re running Windows 8 in one of the 13 languages that the preview is available in, we strongly recommend that you download the preview from the Windows Store. When you install from the Store, you can’t create installation media, but most download the preview directly from the Windows Store,” it added. http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-t...w-363370.shtml for rest of page it available tomorrow ---------- Post added at 23:17 ---------- Previous post was at 23:01 ---------- Windows 8.1 to let you shut down directly via Start button Windows 8.1 will try to make your life a bit easier by letting you shut down or restart your PC from the Start screen. The preview edition of Windows 8.1 isn't due out until Wednesday. But the Windows Server 2012 R2 preview is available now for download. Since both versions share many features in common, the server-based preview provides a good glimpse at what's ahead for PC and tablet users. Windows 8.1 users will be able to trigger a shut down or reboot much more quickly than in Windows 8. On the PC's Start screen, simply right-click on the new Start button to display the familiar pop-up menu. You'll now find a shut down command at the bottom of the menu, which lets you turn off or restart your device. Windows 8 offers a few different ways to shut down or restart, none of them ideal, so this new option is clearly Microsoft's attempt to make the feature more accessible. Users will spot a few other changes in the Windows 8.1 Start screen. The tile for "Computer" has been renamed "This PC." An arrow at the bottom of the Start screen takes you directly to the Apps screen. You can select multiple tiles and then run a single command on all of them in one shot. And some tiles give you a choice of sizes, including Small, Medium, Wide, and Large. http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57...-start-button/ |

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Apparently this is the fix for the 'not applicable' message:
1. Place and rename the MSU file in an easily accessible place, e.g. C:\8preview\preview.msu 2. open command prompt in administrator mode. 3. Type: Expand –F:* c:\8preview\preview.msu C:\8preview\ 4. Type: DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\8preview\Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64.cab I've been trying it but CMD comes back after point 3 saying Destination is not a directory: C:\8preview. Any ideas? |

---------- Post added at 11:52 ---------- Previous post was at 11:46 ---------- Microsoft yesterday released the new Windows 8.1 Preview and even if the update is available as a free download for all Windows 8 users, not everybody can install it. For some reason, a number of Windows 8 consumers cannot deploy Windows 8.1 Preview, even though the update shows up in the Store after deploying the original patch. We’ve contacted Microsoft for more information on this and it appears that it’s all because of different language packs, so the company recommends users to wait until an official fix is released and only then deploy Windows 8.1 Preview. “The base language of your OS (the language chosen during setup) is outside one of the 13 supported languages for Windows 8.1 Preview. Please note that any other language or non-specified version (such as English (United Kingdom) and Portuguese (Portugal)) are not included among the supported languages,” Microsoft explains. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windo...s-363653.shtml that why some of you cant install it yet |
