5.1 sound

Had to reset tivo to get 5.1sound back as tivo was only giving me stereo. Had to do this 5 times now in the month or so. Anyone else had the same?

You mean the DOCSIS upstream power? 52 is the recommended maximum for TiVo, but like all STBs they will actually work up to 61.

But the DOCSIS downstream and TV power levels also need to be correct. That is what attenuators are used for. Attenuators don't reduce the upstream power (in fact they make it a bit worse).

Is there a way to delete some of the apps? Think it may prove a nuisance to scroll through so many useless ones in the future.

Thanks for all the advice and tips !!! One more quick question, I have a VERY basic/cheap 5.1 surround system that i want to hook the Tivo box up to. The back of the subwoofer where all the connections go in only has red and white RCA inputs, however i would imagine the Tivo box has a DIGITAL output Is there any way I can connect the Tivo box to my surround sound system ??
EG Is there such a thing as a DIGITAL-RCA convertor I can buy ??

No, it's the other way round.

But normally the sub-woofer would connect to the amp (sound system), and you'd connect the amp to the TiVo using an optical lead or HDMI. What make & model is the amp?

Morning all - i don't have an amp. As i say its only a very cheap surround sound system from one of our larger supermarket chains !! Basically the subwoofer plugs into the wall and from there it powers all the speakers - I can't see it accepts a DIGITAL input anywhere on the back of the subwoofer unit.

So I'll definitely need a convertor box then as mentioned and linked to in andy.m's post ??

Yes, the convertor in andy_m's post is what you need. It takes the optical output from the Tivo and converts to rca stereo. Don't forget to order a toslink and rca male to male cable.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

You need the toslink cable to connect the tivo to the convertor. It's a fibre optic cable. The output from the box is, as you said, a standard male to male RCA cable. Btw, I use an HDMI splitter made by the same company and I can vouch for the quality of their products.

Hi guys, this was reported by Nialli over on vmhdblogspot.co.uk

Virgin Media has published its results for Q1 2012 and actually beat forecasts on signing up new customers and sales, which were up 2.4%. It has also announced first quarter revenues in excess of £1bn, another first for the company.
They added 21,200 customers to its network compared with the previousquarter, the highest in two years. The VM cable subscriber base now at 4.827 million, edging at a glacial pace towards 5 million.

"The appeal of TiVo is driving strong pay TV performance. We added 242,000 more TiVo customers during the quarter to reach a total of 677,100 at the quarter-end, which represents 18% of our TV customer base. This already exceeds the proportion of our customers on our lowest free tier, which now stands at 17% having fallen from 21% a year ago, as we successfully increased the number of paying TV customers by 50,600 in the quarter."

Virgin also added 45,700 cable broadband customers in the period, their highest figure ever for a single quarter.

Full results presentation: Virgin Media 2012 Q1 results

There is no mention of any new channels, HD or otherwise, on the horizon. The only ones confirmed as "coming soon" I'm aware of are Alibi HD and the Olympics BBC bonanza
.

Not sure if any one has seen this or posted it elsewher though

As stated in other post its good to see that the figures are in the right direction. I for one like using cable. I have to say I do not really care who supplies it . As I cannot see even this government allowing pay TV to be a near monopoly.

I've been watching the IPL on ITV4, but every now and again, I get pixelation, then loss of picture, followed by a message saying this channel is unavailable, if you keep having the problem ring etc etc.
A reboot normally does the trick, but is happening a lot.
I tend to have to do a reboot at least once a week either for this or similar loss of a channel.
The V+ in the bedroom is fine.
Any ideas ??
( Mrs D&C has already suggested that I watch the cricket in the bedroom, while she watches the big plasma in the lounge !!!!)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Best tip is to have a play around with it, be prepared to give it some time before you fully make your mind up, and above all trust it. I've seen a lot of people try to tell it what to do and then get upset when it doesn't respond in quite the way they would expect it to based on their experiences with other pvrs.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Well..........not a very good start. Got in from work tonight after TiVo installed at 8am this morning to find out it wasn't working !! Great !!

It was just showing the "Starting up.." screen. I left it for a while but still nothing, I then tried the obligatory switch off, wait 10 seconds, then back on again but still nothing. So i called CS who said they will escalate the prob to Area Manager as was a "less than 12 hour old install". Also said they will send signals down the line to see if it made any difference. They would call me back shortly.

About 15 mins later a very helpful girl called Vicky called who assured me she would try and get prob sorted and that AT THE LATEST an engineer will be with me tomorrow night (Friday). Then all of a sudden about 8.45 tonight it flickered into life :)

Sadly not all good news as Catch Up / On Demand not working....

I was going to cancel engineer call-out but as these services not working I'm going to let him call and hopefully check EVERYTHING out for me

Was comical phoned up today how much it would cost to change my one TiVo box from 500gb to 1tb, was quoted £49 installation and £15 a month more on my bill!!

jempalmer 30-04-2012 23:45

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Seems very reasonable to me. After all, the "installation" would take at least seconds. I can see why you're laughing, I know I would be :)

borrissey 01-05-2012 00:10

Why £15 extra a month to have a 1tb TiVo instead of a 500gb one? That's what I found funny.

jempalmer 01-05-2012 00:20

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Either of the charges are outrageous alone. Combined, well what can you say? I mean you have to laugh or else you'd cry. How much extra does a 1tb Tivo cost VM over and above the 500gb? Next to nothing I'd wager. Utterly unjustifiable. Shame you only rent them and that the HDDs are tied to the specific unit. Before my Sky HD box died I toyed with swapping the 320gb HDD for a 1.5tb.

Have a think about...
- Cost of new box
- Cost of man & van to deliver it to your house and install it
- Cost of administration on back-end systems
- Cost of refurbishing your old box

Even the person who handled your phone call today needs paying.

borrissey 01-05-2012 00:45

Ok I'll stop mentioning the £49 installation fee I haven't a problem with that. It's the £15 a month more that's got me baffled just to have a bigger HDD.

Yes, it needs to be digital to analogue. It would appear to be the opposite. Take a look at this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Opti...6150314&sr=1-4

Thanks for that denphone mate, after the update during the film i did a maual re-boot and the picture seemed to improve it was very dark at the beginning of the film and got lighter,i thought that update was weeks ago.!:erm:

Having said that after the re-boot i watched the film again from scratch it was slightly annoying but hey thats technology for you i suppose.;)

I can recommend the film however it was excellent i give it 9/10 well worth watching,if you have not seen it yet.:)

Glad you've sorted it out Richard , £5.00 seems expensive :)

Anybody having problems with their Tivo box recordings audio being out of sync? Watching live TV is fine, but watching a recording there is a small delay in the sound. Isn't going through an amp or anything HDMI cable straight to a Samsung LED TV.
Recording was made from Sky 2.
cheers

Just saw this from Mark Wilkin on the help & support forum.

Quote:

We've had a technical hitch with our Virgin Media: TiVo service, which means we won't be able to show the last Football First of the season on your TiVo service this weekend.

We’re really sorry about this and hope it won’t cause any inconvenience.

Just so you know, you’ll still be able to watch Super Sunday Football and the Spanish Grand Prix.

Don’t worry – everything will be fixed very soon, so you won’t miss a moment of the new season on our TiVo service.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

If they make a hash of the Grand Prix on Sunday, that'll be something else to growl about.

Yes, however the problem is with the Tivo service. I'd like to watch it on our Tivo in the lounge using the 5.1 kit as opposed to the bedroom on a 32" from the V+ :(

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Watch it on BBC 1 HD then on your TiVo?

jempalmer 12-05-2012 19:35

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Sorry, I may have misunderstood the original post. When I saw the reference to a problem with the Tivo service my assumption was that it would affect the Tivo itself (i.e. on all channels) I don't subscribe to Sky Sports so will be watching on BBC 1 HD. My mistake.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

When I'm doing a wishlist search for boxing I get page upon page of shows that are being broadcast on Boxnation, which I subscribe too. Is there anyway I can do a wishlist search which doesn't include shows on Boxnation? I've tried but without success.

Also is there anyway to search a specific channel for content? I've always enjoyed history documentaries on the BBC and would like to perform a search for this genre on BBC2 and BBC4 only. My current searches bring up tons of programmes from Yesterday and The History Channel.

If there is nothing I can do, does anyone know if virgin are working on improving / refining the wishlist facility?

Unfortunately, no.

Again, no. Wishlists are not channel-specific.

No-one knows for sure but I don't see why not.

Thanks for the info Carl.

To me it seems like pretty basic stuff that should already be incorporated. What it shows is whilst TiVo has some flaws at the moment, when the flaws get sorted this will be a truly awesome piece of kit. In fact forget flaws, all Virgin need to do is listen to the feedback from their customers and make changes accordingly.

I agree. On the original S1 Tivo you could "deselect" channels that you wanted the box to 'ignore'; ie never record anything from. This was mainly because that unit had every available channel, including all those you didn't necessarily have.

Unfortunately, with the way things are set up, these things take time.

Seeing as it's specifically bbc history programmes which interest you, you do of course have the option of using the search function on the I player app. It's a bit of a clunky work around I admit, but I can't think of another way.

You can always improve any functionality, but whishlists have a lot of flexibility as they stand. So I wouldn't call them flawed, especially if you bear in mind that Tivo is the only box you can get whishlits on. And there is other functionality that is only available on Tivo.

So Tivo has got a lot of functionality that other boxes haven't. Apart from a Dynamic EPG, does the Sky box do things that Tivo can't?

O k regulars here will no I am no fan of Tivo,so I guess my recent experiences will only reinforce my opinion.
Have switch the V+ and Tivo around its the TiVo we tend to watch the most. However we still have the settings for recorded programmes on both. Last night went to a recording on Tivo cut off 20 minutes or so early. tried I Player .Boy is that painful . More so as it was not there. Then went to V+ all fine a working !!!
So not impressed.

Certainly sounds odd. Which programme; time/channel? Neither have dynamic EPGs so I can't see it being an EPG problem.

jempalmer 16-05-2012 15:21

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

Our Tivo hasn't failed to record anything to date. No "hiccups" either (save the ones where it hasn't recorded because of our settings i.e no repeats). Not tried iPlayer as yet. However I did leave the recordings set up on V+ as insurance, at least we can watch in our bedroom if disaster strikes :)

From some time in the last 7 days, ( a week today I think)
Escape to the country, BBC 2 if I recall correctly 18:30
Was not on I player ,that I recall because the boss looked at BBC 1 first & then checked on TiVo to see it was on 2. Boy was that painful :(

Home
Search All TV (or '4' as a shortcut)
Enter "ESCAPE" (in fact you only need to enter "E" for it to appear in the search results, or "ES" for it to be top of the list)
Select programme from search results
Get from On Demand
Choose episode - there are 5 from the last week
Enjoy

Can't see any reason it would not record the whole thing. Even if it re-booted during the recording it would only miss around 6 mins of then just start recording again

Other PVRs include wishlists. In the UK the 3View pvr has it as a function.

Well I had never heard of that one before. According to Amazon it's "not currently available" anyway. Also, it's limited to 'keyword' and 'celebrity' (sic) so Tivo still has the edge ;)

I'm not sure that the term "wishlist" is one that a company could copyright, register as a trademark etc. Rather too broad a description I would have thought. Would be an interesting test case if ever brought though :)
