Re: TV price rises
It's always worth reassessing your needs when it comes to services you spend your hard earned money on, especially in this economic climate.
In my case I don't want to cancel my landline as my elderly parents are technophobes when it comes to mobiles so I don't think it's fair on them to ring mine from their landline and it costing them a fortune when they want a chat. On a side note for those that are cancelling their landlines. I hope you're not intending on applying for credit eg. Store credit, loans etc. As sometimes you need to provide a permanent contact number. Well, I know it was a big no no when I used to sell credit a few years ago and if anything it's a lot tighter now |

Thanks DF for all the help and information you have given us.
I wish you the very best of luck for the future. Virgin must be raving bonkers to let you go. |

Re: TV price rises
I have been reassessing my own package and hit upon the same point-I rarely use my land line because I've got such a good deal on my mobile (Virgin). In fact, most of my land line use is my mother, who provides most of our child care while we're at work. I could easily do without a land line, but I do think the least I can do is allow my mum the use of a phone so I'll be sticking with it. Then I got to thinking about why I moved to Virgin in the first place. Mainly it was irritation at having to pay for very frequent call outs to Sky who seemed incapable of providing me with equipment that wouldn't break down, and the appalling broadband speeds available from my Bt exchange.
The call out issue remains in Virgin's favour, and Bt only yesterday estimated a speed of 3 mb, accurate to 1 or 2 mb (!), and there are no plans for infinity in my area yet. I'll probably offset some of the price rise, which I still haven't had confirmation of by the way, by reducing my broadband from 30 to 10, which will soon become 20 but apart from that Virgin are still the only company providing me with exactly what I want from both TV and broadband so I don't really have a choice to make. |

Re: TV price rises
I know TV and Broadband can now be cancelled in the minimum contract period due to package increases, but does the increase in call charges / change in connection charge, give me the right to cancel the phone service aswell?

Yes you can cancel all 3 services as all 3 have been affected by the price rises. This was confirmed to me by a VM CS manager around 10 days ago.

We were 10 months into an 18 month contract, the women at retentions tried to charge us £140 to leave the contract early but mentioned price change clause, and she waived the charge for all 3 services. Instead we have ordered Sky broadband unlimited upto 20mb, unlimited anytime calls and free caller display for £17.25 a month for the first six months and then £27.25 thereafter, with £100 Quidco cashback which nearly pays the price of a Freeview+ HD box for some HDTV and recording. |

Phone call to India to ask for a breakdown of my £3.70 increase
Agent: TV will increase by £2, Broadband by £2 Me: But the increase is only £3.70 Agent: Then there will be an adjustment to your account So pressed the "I'm thinking of leaving you button" just to get someone English and got a very pleasant young man who told me that my TV (XL) will increase by £2 and Broadband (M) by £1.50 and Caller display by £0.20 but wait a minute says he, I'll just check your area for caller display, YES it's free saving you £2.05 and the £0.20 increase so your increase will only be £1.45 so only 2.96% as opposed to 7.56% Glad I phoned! |

Re: TV price rises
So I phoned retentions the other day to ask what my price rise would be and as expected £3.50. The conversation went along the following lines:
"Fair enough, but a bit off when you agree a deal and start a new 12 month contract on the back of it." He replied "You've got a point, so as you've six months left I'll credit £21 to your account to cancel it out" Very good of him as I'll only have four months of my contract left when the price rises happen :D Cheers Grim |
Re: TV price rises
Not had anything about the price increases yet, don't know why they can't put it on My Virgin Media. Then again they can't even manage to make the your broadband speed is increasing popup to only appear once per account, it pops up everytime I login.

Re: TV price rises
Just called VM to clarify the position for us and they confirmed a £3.50 price increase from the 1st April and that I could give 1 months notice at that point to cancel all services should I wish to do so.
He also said that this was a national increase for everyone but they were delivering new features such as doubling Broadband speed and inclusive calls to 0845/0870 numbers (which I hadn't heard about before). Off to speak to Sky now and if Fibre is a go in my area from April then I think I will be returning to the dark side. |

Re: TV price rises
Hi all I have been told I will have a price rise of £4.85. How on earth did they work that out? We have:
TV XL 2 x V+ boxes (not tivo) one upstairs, one down so multiroom Talk Evening and weekend 50mb broadband I am on a retentions deal due to so many issues I had (not that it's amazing just a few pounds discount is all) so maybe that is why ? ---------- Post added at 12:53 ---------- Previous post was at 12:46 ---------- Quote:

So because the bills now don't breakdown the costs by service, I would expect that the thinking was the price change letters wouldn't need to either - otherwise it would turn into the 'well my letter say BB is going up by X, but it doesn't say that on my bill' type calls |

Re: TV price rises
Hmmm, £3.50 price rise for me. Not the 'End of the World' but it's pushing my monthly cost very near to £50 ... which equates to almost £600 per year. That's definitely a level that makes me think that I'm paying too much for TV&Internet relative to what I get.
It's also pretty ill-advised to be pushing your prices up by anything up to 10% when the economy is looking so creaky and your main competitor announced and heavily publicised a price freeze. Much as I like the convenience of the V+ and the VOD, I think I'll be dropping my telly package totally and dropping down to the Freeview functionality on my TV when my current contract expires. I'll keep the broadband though as it's been pretty decent and frankly, most of what I watch on TV these days is sourced from the internet anyway and crucially as I live in a rental house that doesn't have a BT landline, I don't want to faff around with paying for installation and committing to a 12 month contract right now. When I move into my own place, I'll consider VM cable for the broadband but I think it's probably a good bet that I'll go with someone like O2 and get a Freesat PVR. VM's bandwidth throttling policies are a real pain for me even though the speed (when unthrottled) is excellent and I've never had service problems. |
Re: TV price rises
No price rise for me.. at least I've not been notified of one... OTOH it may be possible there is one (never been able to make head nor tail of the VM bill so I doubt I could calculate a price rise if I tried).
As with others thinking of ditching pay TV.. static wages and rising prices are making it a luxury now. They should be offering incentives to stay not increasing the prices. |

According to http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/trafficmanagement.jsp only P2P is really restricted. I am on on the O2 Broadband All Rounder package and the only other apparent limitation is when streaming where I seem to have an 8 mbit/sec limit which is easily sufficient for watching HD Youtube or BBC iPlayer. If there were more users in my household I might have to look at "The Works" which apparently has no streaming limit. I've looked at moving my Phone and Broadband to Virgin but the phone call costs were (on the calls I make) much higher than O2s. |
