Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I can't stress the benefits of exercise enough. At the end of April I was 15 stone, heart rate was 82bpm and could run for only 6 or 7 minutes before almost keeling over and dying.
This week I'll be running 16 miles in total, I'm down to 13.7 stone and my heart rate is around 63bpm. Different things work for different people obviously but hitting the road was the best thing I ever did :) |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Exercise wise, I started doing a tabata (high intensity) workout on my recumbant exercise bike.
Tabata/HIIT looks a bit like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piGyvhq2eTk I usually do 5 minutes warmup at level 4 (Bike has levels 1 - 8) Then do the tabata stuff, which is 10 seconds at level 4, 20 seconds at level 7 It's really, really knackering hehe, but you feel the burn and it does seem to help. Also trying to add in other exercises, so I started doing the Sculpt workout from the power90 video, although I must admit, these exercises aren't really designed for festively plump people like myself, heh, so I'm still working my way up to getting through the entire video, but I seem to get a bit further each time I do it, so I'm getting there. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Been doing the HIT with my neighbour @ 3 x 20 seconds.
It's really effective :tu: |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Just came in off a 4.5 mile run, first time in my life I've ever run that far, no stops. I could have done more and would have had my stomach not been playing up so I'm aiming to kill 5 miles tomorrow and now have my eye on the Swansea Bay 10k at the end of September.
6 months ago this would have been unheard of. I have more motivation now and and seriously considering doing it for Macmillan Cancer Support. And my own fitness of course :D Anyone thinking of getting out on the road but are hesitating for whatever reason - please give it a try. My regret was I waited until I was 38, I wish I'd done this 20 years ago. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I went running for a while turning the earlier summer months but found it too difficult to 1) pace myself 2) keep my self-interested. I tend to run as fast as I can, then walk, and then leg it again.

That's what I do now as I've managed to get past the 'lack of focus' stage the the NHS app is excellent, the narrator is very supportive and gives you loads of encouragement. It's interval training too which sounds like it would suit you and gradually increases the more you do.

Good luck to anybody (Derek?) taking part in the Great Scottish Run tomorrow.
I'll be doing my second half marathon and hope to remember finishing this time, unlike last year!! .... I will definitely not be dehydrated at the finish this year :D |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Yup 1/2 for me tomorrow. As long as I make it round I'll be happy.
|
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Well that was a particularly painful and soul destroying experience.
Made it round, was going well till just about mile 7 then it all went wrong, ended up almost passing out and got really woozy with tingling in my fingertips. I've never had that before even in longer runs in extreme heat. :erm: Ended up dropping the pace *right* down and walking the hills. Anyway its done, a new PW for the 1/2 marathon but another medal for the collection and I've got a few months before the next race and 16 miles of hills. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Well done :D
|
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Well done on finishing Deek. Doesn't sound like the best experience but at least you dug in and didn't give up. You must have been tempted!. 16 miles of hills doesn't sound that appealing though:shocked:
Presumably you get regular medicals in your line of work, I'd certainly mention the tingling in the fingers to a medic before you tackle anything else.... Good mods are hard to find:) I got round in just under 1h:54m, about 7 minutes slower than last year but 2 hours less in the medical tent.... definite result. :D ...also managed to see my good lady and both daughters when I came into Glasgow Green, and again at the finishing line so that was great..... although obviously it cost me about 7 minutes inspecting their banners, good luck mascots and giving/receiving hugs ;) |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Just heard there was a fatality yesterday at the half marthon. :(
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...-west-19465413 Poor Man, only 28. The medics would have been there quickly I'd imagine as it's only about a mile from the finish. My thoughts are with his friends and family. |

Hurrah, almost half way to my weight goal.
Weightloss so far - 72.4lbs (5.1 stones) Weightloss to go - 73.8lbs. Scary how high I went. :( |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Back in May I was 15 stone, and due to the running and almost sensible eating I weighed myself this morning..13 stone 1 :)

Thanks - at least 3 and sometimes 4 days a week, minimum of 4 miles each time. I'm going for distance rather than timing because whenever we do speedwork at my running club I end up injuring my hip which lays me up for a few days.
|
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Just over halfway in my 5X50 challenge. So far I've managed to do 339 KM with at least 5KM every day with only one day being a real struggle and I'm definately feeling the benefits.
I've dropped a bit of weight but seen a decent drop in my body fat % and on my Sunday long runs managed to go further than I've been able to go for over a year. :tu: 23 days to go. Barring any major disasters it should set me up nicely for the Southside Six in November. |

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
5X50 done!
619 KM over the 50 days and I weigh 1/2 stone less than before. Now just the small matter of 16 miles on Sunday with this as the final sprint. Yes thats stairs at the top of the hill! http://cloudplasma.co.uk/wp-content/...ueens_park.jpg |

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I've been doing the 5:2 diet since mid January (with one week missed as I was away) so far 10lbs off and on my non fasting days it's really had a positive on my appetite.
As exercise is difficult with the RA (and some of the meds don't help on weight side of things) I'm really pleased how its going. It may be a combination of the weight loss and the diet but RA seems to be behaving a lot better too. Keep up the great work folks :) |

Got my brave pills out and ventured to the east end of Glasgow, which until now was a place i was only familiar with for non-recreational reasons, for the new Tollcross parkrun.
Ooft! The toughest of tough courses, with hills crammed into every meter of the 5k. Still not a bad wee event and continuing my parkrun tourism in a fortnight with a trip down into Ayrshire and deepest, darkest banjo country. |

Has anyone had shin splints on here and found a cure? I really need your help badly please. I've not got problems breathing wise, I can go further jogging but my lower legs are stopping me. i am stretching and ive changed footwear but the pain isnt going away. that said as my stamina increases by going daily regardless i am able to push a little further than i could say a few days ago. heres where it hurts badly (not my legs)
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/at...1&d=1379443862 if i relax my legs fully the whole lower part kills so im mentally focusing on my upper body if that makes sense to ease the pain. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I've currently got shin splints - the only sure way to treat them is complete rest from any impact other than walking. If like me the thought of no exercise at all feels impossible then you can do things like swimming. I go to my local gym and use the cross trainer which is ideal for having no-impact exercise.
Make sure you get your gait checked to ensure your training shoes are suitable and that you don't over-pronate. After about 6 weeks you should be feeling better. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I get the pain sometimes when walking as well :( resting is frustrating and yeah i can't accept it, Id understand if i was putting my legs through hell but im not, ive only just begun if anything. where would i get my gait checked? do you know if compression sleeves work?
|
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
OK that's not good - several physios have told me that if you get the shin splint pain while resting (or anything as well as running) then it's most likely a stress fracture. Get along to your local NHS physio before doing any further exercise. It's generally treated the same way but you might need specialist advice.
Most specialist running shops will check your gait, some charge for it (then deduct the amount from the price of any shoes you buy) but I always go to my local Go Outdoors, they do it for free. Compression socks 'can' help but they tend to just mask the problem. They can get you through a race but should only be used as a part of rehabbing your leg. Once your 6 weeks of rest is up it's a good idea to use them then but run (or whatever) at a much slower pace and less distance for the first 2 to 3 weeks as you build back up. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Thank you Russ. I'll give my doctor a call tomorrow.

An update on shin splints. I spoke to a friend who knows a physio and was told to do some additional ankle stretches and some weird looking actions during running when the pain appears. I was basically told to open up my ankle, I was too tense. I havent yet called the doc because the physio advice is working so far. Does anyone know if theres a watch or something along the lines that you can strap to your body and it calculates distance run ? :erm: |

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
My iPhone GPS doesn't let me down in any other way.
I'm not saying they're totally inaccurate, as you say they're just about good enough for a training run but if you're after PBs or a reliable way to check if your pace or times are lagging then you can't compare them to a GPS watch. The running club I'm at actively discourages people from using the GPS in phones for that very reason. |

If you're using the same device and it has consistent inaccuracies then you will be able to measure your improvements. They might not be as accurate as you would like if you're competing but they're good enough for most people. I just checked my half marathon stats. It measured 13.37 and the time difference was nearly 5 minutes.... that's nearly 5 minutes of waiting for the elites to start at the beginning and me forgetting to stop it at the end. The satellite map shows very clearly where I started the tracking (about 100 yrds before the start line) and where I finished (about 150 yards after the real finish line). |

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
I came across this on my travels..
http://tribesports.com/challenges/30...-sec-to-5-mins It's about using 'planking' to strengthen the muscles that runners use but often fail to train properly. It's not just for runners though, planking helps with your general posture anyway especially for those with lower back problems. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
That's really good, I'd been doing a sort of plank (basically a held in the upright position of a press up) but this is much much better, you really feel it much sooner.
Nicest of all, you're not sat there endlessly doing 200 sit ups like I was, when you get the same (or possibly better effect) by doing a plank for 1 min x 3 times every 2 days! ---------- Post added at 09:23 ---------- Previous post was at 09:20 ---------- Quote:
Just noticed that, one thing you'd do is just use the same device, if it's inaccurate, at least it's consistently inaccurate, and the timings will be relative for improvement, if you're using 6 different devices, then you'll get variation - just use the one device. |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
You're missing my point, if you use the same device, and it's consistently inaccurate, It's like a clock running 1 minute slow, you know it's running 1 minute slow, and it always runs one minute slow. So you can allow for it.
I'm unconvinced that a GPS unit is so inaccurate (on the same device) that one time it's 0.2km short, then the next day 0.2km long |

If you use a lot of veg or salad to do this If you are used to eating a lot your stomach will be stretched so you will not feel full when you have had enough so you need to be your own guide |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
If you eat when you're not actually hungry, your body will store it whether it's a salad or pie and chips.

Your body is burning energy all day long. You feel hungry when your stomach is empty not when your body is in need of energy. All food is processed by the body and to be used as energy it gets refined down to a molecular level. It does not happen in the stomach all this does is breaks the food down ready for passage through the intestine. This is where the goodness from food is absorbed I did nutrition along with Anatomy and Physiology at collage some years back. It does not matter when you eat the calories whether you are hungry or not. I eat 1400 calories a day spread over 5 meals the last 2 meals in the evening I could do without but I need the energy so I eat even though I am not hungry What you said about hunger is wrong |
Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?
Yeah the thing about hunger is a bit odd. Your body does use up calories during the day and while eating only when your hungry makes sense, after all it's less food, it's not the case that if you're not hungry you don't need to eat or that it will cause you to gain weight alone. Your body can still use the food right away and it doesn't 'store' it if your hungry and 'not store it' if you're not. If you eat less calories then you burn then you should lose weight, if not you'll gain probably gain it.
