Demand Five here in Teesside as of this morning!

Quote:

Virgin Media's TV base increased by 14,800 in the third quarter to 3.77m customers.
More than half use Virgin's video-on-demand service.

The company has increased its portfolio of high-definition channels from one to 28 in a year, including the addition of Sky Sports and Sky Movies, with 222,100 new customers taking the HD offering in the quarter.
Overall Virgin Media has 1.4m subscribers to HD, a 38% year-on-year increase.

The company also added more than 100,000 customers taking its Sky premium suite of channels, taking the total to 725,000, including 52,000 who have signed up to Sky Sports HD and, or, Sky Movies HD since launching the channels in August.
Can't work out if
  • 725,000 out of a possible out of 3.77 million sub subscribe to Sports/Movies (about 20%ish of all subscribers)
  • 52,000 out of a possible 1.4 million for Sky Sports/Movies HD (about 4% of HD subscribers)
are good figures.

Regarding Sky Atlantic, we are in discussions with Sky regarding this channel now. We know little more about the channel and its programming than we have read in the press. It is entirely up to Sky as to whether they make the channel available to us and at what price. As always, we will do our very best to continue to offer our customers the best entertainment content available, but as I'm sure you'll appreciate, there are no guarantees. As soon as we have something to announce, rest assured we will
Maybe it would be possible to email her back and ask why a provision for Sky launching new non Premium channels wasn't included in the negotiations when selling the Virgin channels and getting Sky HD?

Most people on this forum would have covered that in the nefgotiations and the Virgin media people are meant to be proffesional negotiators.

You don't really think a senior Director at Virgin will answer that, do you? It would mean referring to the commercial agreements they have with Sky regarding the sale of VMTV and carriage arrangements, neither of which are going to be made public.

It's very easy for us to sit here and question the deals that may have been done, but we don't know the details nor will we. Does Sky Atlantic simply replace Bravo/Channel One/Trouble? Don't know. Is it a "Sky Basic" and therefore get covered by the Sky Basics HD agreement? No idea.

All we know is that when Sky withheld Sky One it hit them hard commercially and they ended up returning to the table to appease advertisers. Sky has just shy of 10m TV customers and the only other significant pay platform adds over a third more (3.77m to be exact) - it's in both sides interest to expose Atlantic to as many paying viewers as possible.

And let's not forget the limited appeal of Atlantic - Mad Men on BBC4, a much larger viewing pool, has tiny audiences.

When Channel One and Bravo shut how many channels will be lost including +1, surely this will hurt VM more than Sky , as Sky already has more channels.

Do we get Sky Living? Or does the rebrand mean that it and it's +1 and 2 versions go as well?

Exactly sky have stitched Virgin up big time. Virgin will find it hard to put subs up unless more channels are added.

Yeah but Sky 'lost' them as well so it doesn't count towards the difference in channels between Virgin and Sky which I gather was the original point.

And I believe we do keep all the Living channels, as its only a rebrand which I guess Virgin would have accounted for in the contract.

If you read her response they kinda already have!

My point was really not about specifics anyway. Just a feeling I have that the deal was ONLY done on what we have and not what might come.

I realise it's difficult to do that sort of a deal but I'm sure there would have been ways and means.

I guess it depends on if the production company have the facilities to produce in HD.

Spooks has been going for year and may be a multi year contract which was completed before HD was a serious consideration and if it's not in the contract and it does occur additional costs to produce in HD who is to pay for it.

No idea if that is it but a possibility!

Sky isn't advertising it as "Exclusive to Sky"; Digital Spy has misreported it as that. All Sky has said is that it will be exclusive to Pay TV.

maybe you should post what is considered on topic as sometimes it very hard to tell is this on topic or off topic but even if it jsut on topic it then can lead to off topic posts maybe this oculd help reduce it

I bet this is to do with Sky content that will be coming soon, M+ and TV choice would make Sky content available cheaper then subscribing to the channels that they are broadcast on.

Of course, it must be Sky's fault. Is there a slight possibility it could be VM trying to get extra money from their customers.

Yes their is at least a slight possibility. Bearing in mind that people on lower packages didn't get tv choice for free it seems unlikely though. I think they charged something like £7 and they could have just charged more if they wanted more money. I would think it is quite possible that programme makers didn't like their programmes being on lower tiers. Remember as well that Sky tried to stop VM having Sky 1 on their lower tiers. So it does seem possible that Zantarous is right.

Yes this could be a slight possibility?

But what i think it could be is due to all the content been shown on the VIRGIN PLAYER, TV CHOICE ON DEMAND AND MOBILE ( THREE SCREENS ), from what i have been reading this is all for XL customers as this quote is from the VIRGIN PLAYER FAQS:

I don't have Virgin TV XL. Can I add Virgin Media Player as a separate service?
Sorry, Player is only available to Virgin TV XL subscribers with Virgin Broadband.

It could be a sign that XL viewers can look forward to better content on TV Choice On Demand, and that would be a good thing. However, it's a shame that lower tier subscribers cannot have access to the cheaper programmes. I would have thought that would make commercial sense to VM as well because as it stands, if customers on lower tiers are charged extra at present for TV Choice, now they will no longer benefit from that subscription.

Whatever the reasons behind it unless you are a top tier customer then the only on demand available will be catch up (which of course is freely available on a PC anyway) and PPV, hardly compelling given the technology behind it.

It seems crazy when Sky customers have their on demand content aligned to their subscription package. It isn't a very flexible way of doing things as some customers simply don't want XL, if they had wanted it surely they would have had it anyway rather than pay £7 extra for TVC.

My neighbour phoned CS today to try and add a channel for just 30 Days and obviously was told he'd need to change his package.
He was told by the CS agent that in January VM are changing the TV packages to give people greater choice on what channels they want.
Anybody else heard anything along these lines?

I was only trying to guess what the reason for this been removed was? :erm:

Also i do feel for the customers that has subbed for the service and now it has been removed for them, i myself think that this is bad sense. But as previousley said this could be due to new carraige arrangements EG NBCU and also the SKY deals:confused:

I thought your reasoning was quite plausible but what's the point of gaining new content and then narrowing the available audience, particularly when on demand is such a unique part of VM's offering given the superior technology.

The suspicious side of me still thinks it could be a ruse to bleed more money out of customers though.

I do understand what you mean by the last comment as i have a lateral thinking about everything and can see what is going to happen with all the customers that have subbed to the service and it is wrong.
But also i am able to see the buisness side of this as they are trying to get more people to take up xl and also get them maybe to the 3 SCREENS service as they may have the BB and a MOBILE with VM so they will try and target this demographic:erm:

I totally agree with you, I am guessing it is a business decision. It always baffles me though when some quarters slate Sky for doing similar things.

But with this move and the way HD channels are mostly only available to XL customers it does seem they could possibly alienate a lot of customers, I hope not. The customer who raised this on the VM forum was fuming, as were others.

I don't find many people agreeing with me either! It would be nice if they offered the customers affected a discount if say they agreed to a new 12 month XL contract, otherwise I wouldn't blame them one bit if they jumped ship. It's not as if it's a straight price increase, they are actually forcing an upgrade if they want to continue receiving their current services which must be wrong.

If they offer them a discount then us customers who are willing to pay for higher packages would have to subsidise them.
If they jump ship then who are they going to jump ship to? Sky's minimum package is £19 (going up to £19.50 I believe). I wonder as well how many people took out the £7 option. TV choice is nice to have in with the xl package but no way would I pay that for it especially if I chose, or could only afford, to pay for one of the lower tiers. I'm also sorry to see this option go but let's face it, it's not going to be the end of the world, even to most of the people who took this option.

I do agree with this, but ther is one thing that could let this down ( the number of subscribers of the lower teir packs )

What happened with the VIP50 pckage as most of the VIP20 custs were not happy with it and they were offered the SKY HD sub free for 6 months.

Are you on a retention deal, lots of people seem to be so are they not being subsidised?. They can jump ship on to whoever they like I assume. If you are not an XL customer then there no longer really seems any compelling reason to stay with VM, virtually no HD and no on demand other than catch up and PPV, I'd personally rather have Sky if I wasn't an XL customer, at least you would get on demand aligned to your sub and a wider choice of SD channels and even without paying the £10 HD charge you would still get most of the non XL HD channels like BBC HD etc.

Well touché on the discount. I have got a loyalty discount.:) I will give you that one. It would possibly be a good idea to give them at least an introductory discount to xl.
I stand by what I am saying on moving to Sky though. One minute you are sorry for people who can't afford XL, then you suggest they might take out Sky which is £19 minimum. If they wanted a wider choice of popular sd channels they would have to pay more than that, in which case they would be better getting xl. They would then have tv choice back, and ESPN and some HD channels.
I wonder how much on demand they would get for £19 anyway. It being tied to a package isn't necessarily a good thing as the stuff they would get is probably on their linear channels anyway. They would also lose catch up on the four main channels.

Anyway we are off topic here. I wonder if the mods can move these posts to the correct thread where this is already under discussion.

£20 (2 packs) would cover all of Sky's entertainment and lifestyle channels but more importantly the attached on demand content plus a lot more FTA content like CBS. Anyway I agree we are off topic and I doubt we will ever agree which is fine, it's just my opinion and it will not change. For the lower tier packages I think Sky offers far more than VM which I guess is what I am saying.

I did not say it was sky fault but we know that Sky content is coming to VoD on Virgin and as Living and Sky One are both on the XL pack it makes sense to remove TV Choice for customers that are on M+ and pay £7 for TV choice, so for a price of £12.50 they would be able to see content the rest of us are paying £23/29 for when subscribing to the XL pack.

Edit: Just noticed that Sky One is actually on the M+, but there are other channels in the XL pack that are on TV Choice.
