No they should be fine as purchaes are linked to your iTunes account now.

Tezcatlipoca 27-12-2012 12:52

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

It says you will lose them because you're wiping the iPad. Don't worry - as Stephen said all purchases are linked to your account.

Just make sure that you do a full "Erase all Content and Settings" after you have backed up the iPad. This is a secure wipe, so it'll be safe to then sell/give to someone else.

You can also back up to iCloud as well as iTunes, and use that to restore everything onto the iPad 4 instead of iTunes. I don't actually use iTunes for synching or backing up anymore.

---------- Post added at 11:52 ---------- Previous post was at 11:34 ----------

Oh, and for anyone who received a nice new iPad for Christmas and wants to play "iTunes unfriendly" videos (xvid, wmv, mkv, etc.) on it, try this:

AVPlayerHD

Both it and the iPhone version (AVPlayer) are excellent. They were pulled from the App Store a while back, but were recently reinstated.

Other apps I'd recommend:

If you use Twitter, get Tweetbot. It's far superior to the official app.

iPlayer, Sky Go, 4oD, ITV Player, and Demand Five all have apps.

The Sky+ app is great if you have a Sky box with the new EPG. Guide + Planner management + remote control.

Or if you have Virgin Media TV, get Virgin TV Anywhere.

TVCatchup lets you watch live Freeview.

SmartGlass is good for those with an Xbox 360.

Some games, in no particular order... Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy and Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders, ARC Squadron, Asphalt 7, Galaxy on Fire 2 HD, Infinity Blade 2, Jetpack Joyride (currently free), LostWinds 1 & 2, Modern Combat 3, Modern Combat 4, N.O.V.A. 3, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP, Temple Run, Need For Speed: Most Wanted (currently only 69p), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City...

There's an app for Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe.

BBC News, YouTube.

Comics? comiXology Comics, Marvel, DC.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Doesn't the "erase all content and settings" function require me to be using the iPad?

Only I wanted to clear it before sending it for repair, from a security point of view.

When using the restore settings to send my data to the new iPad won't it also try and reset that to ios 5.1.1 ?

Thanks again for help.

"Erase all Content and Settings" is a secure wipe. It erases everything, and leaves it as it would be when you first take it out of the box, with it then asking for a very first iCloud or iTunes set-up.

Nope. Restoring a backup (whether from iTunes or iCloud) won't downgrade the firmware.

Given Apple's massive profits, massive cash reserves, and increasing sales, I think that it does actually "have a clue".

agreed. fanbois only need apply. keep hold of the money and buy an MS Surface Pro once it's out (forget the RT version). now THAT is gonna be a tablet-killer.

Ah, you mean that one from MS that only has 23GB of free storage on the 64GB model or 83GB of free storage on the 128GB model? ;)

http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/29/39...pace-windows-8

OK, at least it can use cards and external storage (unlike the iPad), but to have that much of the internal storage already taken up and unavailable is rather lame.

Oh, and some prices...

Surface RT (WiFi only) -

£399 for "32"GB, £479 for "32"GB + Touch Cover, £559 for "64"GB + Touch Cover.

Surface Pro (WiFi only) -

$899 for "64"GB, $999 for "128"GB. No UK prices yet that I can find.

Note: The 128GB iPad 4 price quoted earlier was for the WiFi+Cellular model. The 128GB WiFi only model is £639 (with the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB WiFi only models coming in at £399, £479, and £559 respectively).

that's the one - the one with USB 3.0 on it. and miniport. and an i5 processor with 4GB RAM. and a fully fledged operating system on it. the one that businesses will be buying into for their sales teams and probably more across the enterprise due to the fact it's a windows based machine, so is immediately and easily integrate-able in existing AD environments, light and can act like a tablet or a more serious machine. yes.

ha! ha! yeah it does! lol. although to be fair, I think W8 will be ok (note, just 'ok') on a touch-screen. I don't like it on a desktop though. I'm trying to like the OS, but just can't do it.

I've been playing that the last week or so. Love it.

It's come in for a lot of criticism due to the micro-transactions / "freemium model", but I don't think it's a problem at all unless you are so impatient (or so crap) that the only way you can unlock cars and events is to use real money.

I've put a good few hours into it so far and have not spent a single real-life penny on it. I've easily managed to unlock more events and make lots of in-game money without having to pay real money.

The "Time Synced Multiplayer" ("TSM") is a great feature. It's quite satisfying when you beat the times etc. of your friends, plus you get bonuses for doing so.

I've got it linked to my Facebook account, so if anyone from here is playing it and is on my FB friend list then you should see me. Also, any iOS players can add me as a friend on GameCentre - "Tezcatlipoca".

There are only two things I am disappointed with:

1) It does not have AirPlay support, despite Real Racing 2 having it.

2) It does not use iCloud for game save syncing, despite this being a feature of iOS that various other games use. This is a pain, as it means you cannot play on one iOS device and then carry on from the same point on another iOS device. As such, I've been concentrating on playing it on my iPhone. When the devs finally sort this issue (they are allegedly working on a solution), I'll play it on my iPad, too.

It wouldn't really matter if it didn't as you would be prompted to install it once you've set up a WiFi connection.

Hope this is in the right place. I've installed the Virgin TV anywhere app on my Ipad4, the device wouldn't register, so I registered it on the Virgin app site. I've tried deleting the and re-registering the device, but no luck. Can anyone please help?

5th generation iPad: iPad Air.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad-air/

http://store.apple.com/uk/buy-ipad/ipad-air

Thinner, lighter, more powerful. Looks like a larger version of the iPad mini. Released on the 1st of November, replacing the 4th generation iPad's current price-points.

2nd generation iPad mini: iPad mini with Retina display.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad-mini/

Same resolution as the full-size iPad with Retina display, with the same A7 chip as the iPad Air. Due "later in November".

For some reason Apple is still keeping the iPad 2 and iPad mini as well.

LSainsbury 22-10-2013 21:06

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Anybody know if you can pre-order / reserve the iPad Air for store pickup on 2nd November? Can't find a way to do it, and I'm not going on the 1st to queue up - utterly pointless waste of time.

Tezcatlipoca 22-10-2013 21:15

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

I don't think so.

Apple does not seem to be doing pre-orders this year :(

So instead of ordering online tonight and having it delivered on the release date, you have to order *on* the release date and wait, or brave the queues and stock in the store...

LSainsbury 22-10-2013 21:22

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

That's the problem - nobody will be at the address on the 1st as we work - and I can't get it sent to a work address as I may be out with customers, and I don't really want ~£500's worth of iPad being taken back by the courier where I won't be able to collect it from on the Saturday.

Tezcatlipoca 23-10-2013 00:45

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

I'd also much prefer an online reservation for an in-store pickup... Apple has done it with some past products, but seems rather inconsistent. Sometimes when it does do it, it's not until later on after the launch.

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Apple seem to thrive on the publicity of having people camp and queue outside of their stores. The stores themselves are practically useless as it's nigh-on impossible to get any service and the last time I visited one there were no check-outs.

Maybe Amazon will start taking pre-orders over the next few days, worth keeping an eye out.

There are normally a few physical check outs, although if you have an i device with a network connection, you can download the Apple store app that will let you buy products by scanning their barcodes and it will charge whatever payment method you use for the Apple account on that I device.

Failing that, if you are paying by card, and can find a member of staff, they normally have access to a wireless card terminal. I will say that in my experience (I've been in the Regent Street, Covent Garden and various local Apple stores), Apple stores usually have a lot more staff than competing stores (although they do tend to be a lot busier as well).

I know, it's a great idea if you have an iPhone but if you don't have one it can be a bit discouraging if you just want to pop in for something on the off-chance. I've always bought via accosting a member of staff but trying to find someone who isn't occupied by tyre kickers can be a challenge in the busy stores like Trafford Centre.

I like the look of this new machine though. I have the iPad3 with 3G and it's a pretty heavy beast so, if ever there was a reason to replace then this is it.

Tezcatlipoca 23-10-2013 20:10

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Yup. I currently have an iPad 3 and I'll be getting an iPad Air when it's released. The decrease in size and weight is meant to be quite significant, while of course it is also a hell of a lot more powerful...

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

Bah I've come to the conclusion that the quality of the DAC circuit in the iPad is utter crap. I've tried using Sampletank, Sunrizer and a couple of other software instruments in rehearsal via midi interface (because my big sampling/master keyboard doesn't fit in my car) but never been able to get a decent sound out if it.

Practically everything sounds like Brian Eno playing the glockenspiel inside a skip :(

Tezcatlipoca 03-11-2013 22:54

Re: The Apple iPad Thread

I ordered an iPad Air on Friday morning, thinking that it would be like when I ordered my iPad 3 and it would sell out very quickly with deliveries slipping by weeks...

... and yet checking the online store now, Apple is still saying that orders will still be dispatched within 24 hours. I have also seen posts on other forums from people saying that physical shops, including Apple, have lots of stock.

Mine is due on Tuesday, but I wish now I had just gone in the Apple Store on Saturday! Oh well...

If it has the usual 35mm jack (which it would have), then it'll work on anything. Though the remote part probably won't function.

I thought all earphone jacks were 3.5mm (or 6.3 mainly headphones), so not seen or heard of a 1.5mm jack before. I suspect it is a 3.5mm and will work. The mic and remote 'probably' not, only on the item it's intended for.
