Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Hello All,

i am having a problem with my ross Freesat kit everything is up and running but i am unable to receive any of the 5 channels ie Channel 5, 5*, 5*+1 and some of the cbs channels plus a few others any ideas of how to find these channels i have been thinking of buying a signal booster even thoughstrength and quality are both over 70%

Kymmy 24-02-2012 19:05

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Ch5/BBC and a few other channels have recently moved to Astra 1N from Astra 2D so your transponder list may be incorrect.. Not sure how to correct that on the ROSS boxes except to say that a complete rescan of the sat should correct the issue. If it fails then try a manual channel entry using the details at kingofsat.com or lyngsat.com

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Regarding Ch5, just noticed that my box isn't getting the same channels either so it's not a ROSS box fault.. Will investigate

---------- Post added at 11:55 ---------- Previous post was at 11:39 ----------

OK, just found out that my transponder list didn't have the update new transponder for service scanning.. No idea how to edit the transponder lists on the ROSS box but you need to add (or manually scan) by doing so it'll find 10 new services which will be the missing channels.

Freq=10964
Pol=Horizontal
FEC=5/6
Symbol Rate=22000

If you find any other channels missing just confirm the frew/pol/fec/sym on Lyngsat and manually add/scan those details

Thanks or that i will have to look into it thing is i have the normal SD Ross Box and not sure how to do this?

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Not sure if this is your manual http://www.ross.co.uk/resources/SD-d...structions.pdf

If it is then page 12 "add a TP" (TP = transponder) and use the details I gave you

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

I spent forever setting up my channel list, editing and deleting many channels to get everything in the perfect order (a good few hours) all worked fine but now my channel 5 has stopped working, says signal is there but its just a black screen. Anybody have any idea of what I can do without having to reinstall it all again? :(

Many thanks to any replies :)

EDIT
Ah just scrolled up and seen other people with this problem.

FIXED Dont know where I'd be without this forum!

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

As stated in the previous posts just manually scan the single transponder with the details given in post #504

Ah yeah thankyou didnt see that post, sorry.

I have managed to get back all my channels now and have finally figured out how to save/edit then in the future without having to restore to factory settings and start from the beginning again!

I have searched the 4 HD frequency though and it still doesent pick up any channels using 12606 27500 which having searched the internet is the fequency for 4 HD.

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Hi
I wonder if anyone has the same problem with the BBC HD channels on the 6110usb box, after rescanning ( it always freezes at 29/92 transponders until I delete that one and rescan) I get all the HD channels OK ITV and Chan 4 HDs all come in at 63% and are fine. The BBC HD ones come in at 69% Quality and are very pixillated. any ideas to what can be done or is it a faulty box?.
Cheers all.

Kymmy 04-04-2012 15:44

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Quality/pixelation problems are mostly caused by a weak signal. Means either the dish is to small or slightly off, the coax is too long or there's an issue with the coax connections.

As for the transponder have you checked what's on that one, also have you checked in case there's an update for the system?

Hello everybody Im new here and have just purchased the Ross FTA system from B&Q for £40 what do you expect. I bought it to use when travelling in a mobile home, but to test it I linked it up to a Sky dish at home thats not in use
and I can get on 2164 channels not checked them all yet and dont expect them all to work, but at the mo satisfied for £40 well spent and will probably upgrade to a better receiver once I get to grips with settings and transponders
blah blah blah and may need some help from you in the future, this site will be very useful

I have a Humax box on the same dish which is
ok and I've also had the ross HDR-8410USB connected on the same line that I was using for the 6110USB and this was OK too, can the BBC HD channels be fine tuned thru the menu to get a decent picture?

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Just spent most of the day messing around with the new ross hd satellite kit long and short of it is my line of sight is obstructed and will need to locate the dish to front of the house my fault no problem there etc.
Whilst thinking this through i decided to disconnect one of the leads from my sky box plug that into the ross box then make another lead from the ross box back to the sky box so basically making a tee-piece i tested this and i got all the channels on both ross and sky boxes i could do this as the ross hd box comes with an inn and out not sure if this is new or not.
Now to install this correctly i will need to make longer x1 of the sky cables to reach the new ross box and then bring a new cable back to the existing sky box whats the best connectors and most importantly will it work it just saves all the agro of putting up another dish when i dont have to thanks for any help

Kymmy 06-05-2012 16:42

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Yes you could use the Sky dish as basically it's the same group of sats for freesat or sky..

It shouldn't matter which port you use on the LNB as they are all designed to output a signal.. If though they are numbered then just use port #1..

You could also just use the LNB from the other system on the mesh dish if you referred

Chris 06-05-2012 16:43

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Yes you can use a different dish. Your cables should be made up with f-type connectors, like this:

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Does anyone know why B&Q have withdrawn the Ross HD kit from their web-site ? I have a problem with my box and have requested an exchange unit B&Q now say I cannot have an exchange, only a refund. This is rather difficult with the dish bolted up on the wall, and I dont know what to do. Any ideas ?

Chris 09-05-2012 10:46

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

A partial refund excluding the dish? Or is the dish faulty?

The Ross HD kit is still on sale in our local Homebase, if you really like the box you might still get one in your local branch.

wombat66 09-05-2012 13:20

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

B&Q will not do a partial refund and have told me I must have the dish taken down and returned with the box to get a full refund. On further consideration I think the fault in my box is a design fault of this latest model, and that B&Q have had so many complaints they have removed the kit from sale. I will bite the bullet and buy a better box. This situation will of course apply to other B&Q customers who want an exchange Ross HD box under the years warranty.

Kymmy 09-05-2012 14:15

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

If it's a fault box then try ROSS and a direct warranty

wombat66 10-05-2012 11:06

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Yes, I tried Ross support, but they are most unhelpful and say they have had no other complaints about the HD box. I find this very unlikely, especially in view of the fact that B&Q have withdrawn the kit from sale. Ross say the box was designed for freesat and are really not interested in any problems which occur with other satellite reception

Kymmy 10-05-2012 11:21

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

It might help if you specify what the problem is??? A design fault to one might turn out to be a curable technical fault.

Also the box is not a FREESAT box but instead an FTA box designed for any KU band satellite hence they are on the transponder listings.. If you are sure it is a fault then just mention that it is an FTA and not a freesat branded box and not fit for purpose and that you're next stop is trading standards trading standards to Ross

wombat66 10-05-2012 19:24

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Firstly, the box is unable to handle tranmissions with AC3 audio, audio drop-outs occur every few minutes. Ross say you get round this by changing the audio to Mpeg, but this does not work with the ones I've tried.

It is not possible to add new satellites, when you enter the frequency information and the Diseqc number, the page jumps back to the satellite list, without registering the information.

The TV/Radio button is very intermittent in operation.

I am not sure which of these faults are design, but the audio fault did not happen with the previous model.

Kymmy 10-05-2012 20:04

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Is there any firmware upgrade??

If not then talk to Ross again, if no luck there then try their complaints dept.. if no luck after that then trading standards

wombat66 11-05-2012 16:30

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Thanks for your interest and advice. I will certainly contact Ross again and see what happens. I would still like to know the answer to my original query, why has B&Q dropped the kit and withdrawn it from sale ?

Kymmy 11-05-2012 16:55

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Probably because Ross is redoing their lineup this year.. B&Q probably got the last production run before the new ones were slated for production

if you you look on the ROSS web site it quotes :"later in 2012"i presume it must mean a new product launch.i too have problems with the new HDR-8130USB reciever,it wont allow you to key in new sats, just takes you back sat page.allso theyve forgotten to add a button to allow you to scroll through the multi screen pages, lol although they wont admit it.sam evans at ROSS doesnt help matters by being defensive in answering queries.ive always defended ROSS B4 but theyve turned out some poor work just lately.

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

you can get round the 'new sat' problem by doing a blind scan on one of the listed sats after changing the frequencies, then changing the name. I bought this kit in January, and it had only just come into the shops, so I am surprised that Ross are replacing it so soon when they tell me they have had no other complaints!!! For £200 you can get a Humax Foxsat and a USB hard drive, a much better bet, I think.

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

For less than £200 there's lots of linux based firmware boxes that will run Enigma which will give you full multisat capability, lots of add-ons, streaming, multi-tuner, 7day cached epg and recording.. Even my SD mutant runs enigma and I got that for less than £100 many years ago

Dunno about online but they still had them in my b/q store on bank hol monday as i baught, and so did my mate and as far as im aware they still have them instock.
With the help of this forum i have connected mine to the more attractive black dish with quad lnb and i installed dish etc myself, had it up and running in about an hour and i cannot fault it ...a good buy i think .

How do you get 7 day EPG? Is it from a transponder or via an internet connection?

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

hi, thanks for replying, i will try that tonight. is it possible that i am on the wrong satellite, i noticed that if i scroll up and down the other satellites that a few of them show the same quality reading, could it be that i am pointing at one of those. the ross manual says there is no need to scan the astra sar as its already programmed in, which i presume would show the list of programmes available even if i wasnt on the right satellite.

Kymmy 12-07-2012 12:03

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

The names of the channels is derived from the transponder scanned so I doubt if you are on the wrong sat unless of course some of the other EU sats have the BBC channels on them.. If you have stuff like BBC (northwest) BBC (London) ITV (Anglia) and others then you have the right sat..

Any ideas?/ help much appreciated

Kymmy 07-08-2012 19:28

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Hi and welcome,

It's been covered many many many times in this thread, but basically the tuning shows the connection between the LNB and the tuner, if you have a sat meter you need to point to one of those peaks and try tuning, if no luck then try another and so on.. If you do get some channels but they're not English then go to Lyngsat.com and see which sat you have by the channels scanned and then go either left (EAST) or right (WEST) until you hit 28.2E

Hi,
I've just joined the forum - please excuse me, I'm not only a newbie but have no idea about technology at all (what is an lnb?!)..I'm in Southern Ireland, had a friend set up and tune in my Ross SD dish and box, and got all the English channels very happily - until last week, when all I could get was 'no programme'...I've tried retuning it based on the manual instructions, but can only pick some some asian channels, Challenge, S4C. I've no idea what's happened :( Can anyone tell me if there is something wrong with the Ross box? Thanks!

Kymmy 22-12-2012 11:51

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

LNB is the little unit on the end of the dish. It recieves the signal, converts it to a lower frequency then sends it down the cable to the main reciever unit.

Try a reset of the ROSS box and then set up the unit as per the install instructions.

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Thanks Kymmy...I've just borrowed a new Ross box from my Dad to see if mine was the problem, still not getting anything decent...I had a look at the Astra site online to see what channels I should be able to get, and it didn't show the BBC, ITV etc that I've been picking up until last week, just 11 channels showing up on the Astra site for me (none good!), but I'd been getting about 27 last week :( Should I be trying another satellite? And why the sudden change in what I'm picking up? Would appreciate any asistance, my daughter is not looking forward to TV free Christmas!

Please can anyone tell me

Chris 03-03-2013 20:56

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

That depends how big the dish is, but quite possibly not. Many free to air channels aimed at the UK are on a spot beam focused on the UK and the signal strength tails off quite rapidly as you move out of the targeted area.

You can still get these channels in France but may need a larger dish.

Kymmy 04-03-2013 09:40

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

http://www.astra2.org/dish.html

That shows you the footprint of the signal and the dish size needed. A 60cm dish will get the UK footprint over most of central and northern france but southern france may be a bust according to offical figures though looking at the experimental map a 60cm dish with a good lnb may work (click on image for larger picture) (the lnb on the ross setup equates to RX2)

balloonman 04-03-2013 20:03

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Thank you chris and kymmy for the your information the dish is 65cm will that be to small
or would i need a french LNB as i am so green to this .
Thank you Jon.

Chris 04-03-2013 20:41

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

There's no such thing as a "French LNB". The one that comes with the Ross kit will do. The question is over dish size. Looking at all the diagrams on the page Kymmy linked to I'm not convinced that a 60cm dish will do in central France. The spot beam for Astra 1N in particular, which is where the BBC's channels are, shows the borderline or a 60cm dish cutting right through the middle of France. It will be easy enough for you to pick up a slightly larger dish, so why not be safe rather than sorry ...

Kymmy 05-03-2013 08:52

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Go to http://www.satbeams.com/footprints, click on the 28 degree sat then on the 1n UK footprint and then use the map to zoom in and click on the location where you are going to. If you click on the map at that location it'll tell you the minimum size dish you need.

Hi all, Ive just bought a satellite system for my motorhome, its a zone 2 dish which is a bit of a lump at 60cm. I probably only need a 40cm zone 1 dish but have just received an email from Aldi and they are selling a Ross system with a 30cm dish. Will this be Ok for use in Zone 1?

Hi,

Having trouble trying to get this to work. I have a sat finder, I adjust the dish accordingly but I still don't seem to be getting a signal.

I have tried plugging the receiver into a neighbours SKY dish and it works but when I choose BBC HD the signal drops completely to 0 again.

Its a HDR-8130USB. I've tried looking on the ROSS site for any firmware but I can't seem to download anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been struggling for days now trying to get somewhere.

Graham M 27-02-2014 09:07

Re: B&Q Satellite - Ross freesat box and dish

Sounds like the dish is misaligned? There are 2(?) satellites the dish needs to be aimed between and that would account for the signal dropping out on certain channels as each satellite carries a different set.

Are you getting a signal on your sat finder, if you are and you still cant get any channels, your on the wrong satellite. There are 2 sats very close together. Once you get a signal try moving the dish to the side very slowly and you should pick up the right one. Took me ages the first time I tried.
Good luck with it.

Is there any updated firmware to decode ??

No, but even if there was a way to "decode" it's not within the site rules to discuss.

The ross system is a closed system so no add-ons can be installed which is the same answer as the person who posted the same question today on sat universe will probably get.
