Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Registered 1 week ago, just got back from pub and run a quick speed test...
http://www.speedtest.net/result/474510638.png Looks like I've been upgraded in last few hours, I did see several Virgin vans out working on the green boxes locally - at last. Area 26 (Farnborough). Yipeeee.... |

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
This morning the download speed has settled at around 9.75Mb - Been watching streaming BBCi Player in HD, excellent! I reckon VM are now on the case in this area, I was suspicious last night when I saw 3 VM vans at different big green box locations near to me. For info. when I last spoke to VM CS UK they told me that the whole GU area should be complete by 1st June - I didn't think it would happen quite so soon though! I live on the Surrey side of the border near to Farnborough.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Still on 2mb here (Area 07), been noticing my internet has been 'dropping' out a lot recently, goes back to normal if I unplug the modem and then plug it back in after 10 seconds.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Upgraded here overnight. (Stoke On Trent. Area 20)

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Quick mention again, the area you are in won't be upgraded all together. More useful is just where you are, or better yet which CMTS you are on, see the connection tab above for how to get this information.
Anyway hot off the presses are that Cwmbran is being done during May - June, and Teesside June - July. Nothing more specific than that I'm afraid. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
If you want to know when your area is being upgraded you might try asking on vm.support.broadband.cable. It`s where they told me about the Teeside upgrade time. Was a bit gutted it`s going to be that long but at least now I know.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I wouldn't trust Virgin Media if they said it was going to get dark tonight!
I was going to upgrade from 2 to 10 meg back in january (and pay) but i was told it would be free, first they sent an engineer out and fitted a new modem, but all i got was 2meg he said i would have to wait til 1st of April for them to turn the 10meg on? Then after that i rang them (Customer services just lie and tell you anything or leave you on hold and hang up) i was told they would be turning it on on the 1st of May 2009, that came and went, and i was told i should have been told to register online and then it would be within 24 hours then i was told that it wouldn't be before 1st October 2009 and may be December 2009? However, i've read all sorts of adverts and claims, and i was told twice this week that as i live in Bristol i should be able to get 50meg imediately so they told us today? and they said thier technical people don't know what they are talking about, so i rang them and they just blame the sales people? so i've got 2meg and god knows when they will ever if ever upgrade the speed |

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Still awaiting 10Mb upgrade in the OL2 area. The thing is since I got the news of this upgrade which though not exactly free, but still sounds like a good deal for £2 and it has awakened my interested in BB speeds. I have a question which I hope someone can answer, is it better financially to wait for this M to L upgrade before I move up to the next level?
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
It isnt an M to L upgrade. It`s still M. There are two 10Meg packages with differing download allowances. As for finance - you pay the same whether you register for the upgrade or not.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Thank's for the info mjeff2k. If I'm understanding this upgrade then has limits to downloading? Sorry, but when I'm trying to figure out the best options for BB I have to say that all the different tarriffs on Virgin,O2 and Sky makes my head spin.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Yes the 10Meg `M` package has a 750Meg limit between 4pm - 9pm. If you go over they knock your speed back 75% for 5 hours. The 10Meg `L` package has a bigger allowance (1500meg I think)
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Quote:
If you opt to upgrade to 10Mb L now you will have to take into account the effect changing your package could have on your contract and any loyalty discounts you may currently have. You also have to be aware that you would probably be unable to return to slightly cheaper M BB. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I dont believe it, I`ve been throttled. Ive downloaded nowhere near 750mb.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Well tomorrow I should have an engineer calling to 'install' my cable modem (STB cannot handle 10meg and I have been told there is now way to install the cable modem myself). So I will post tomorrow afternoon and let you know if the RM12 area has 10meg.

I have been upgraded from 2 to 10 I am paying £2 per month more (yes I know they say its not for the upgrade but the other prices have been held) I am only getting at best 5mb download according to online speed tests much less on upload, why is the speed so slow when its supposed to be 10mb. (yes I know its up to) but its a long way short. My modem was supposed to be fine.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Just had our broadband transferred from STB to Modem today in the Brighton area. Once everything was set up and we had finished going through the installation site we were instantly on 10Mb without having to sign up.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
So I've been looking at the upgrade timetable and note that Bishop's Stortford is in the first group (SFAIK Harlow comes under the Bishop's Stortford region) and am beginning to wonder why I've not yet been upgraded. Then I look at the heading of this first group - "If you live in one of the regions below you can register to benefit from the upgrade right now:" - and realise it might not mean what I first thought it did:
Does it mean I can benefit from the upgrade right now, or does it only mean that I can register right now? Third possibility: Maybe VM have a different idea of the meaning of "right now" than the majority of their customers do? |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
It means if you register for it now and your area has already been upgraded then you will get it straight away
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
'Scheduled', looked it up in a VM Thesaurus and it came up with 'replacement for the often overused phrase 'coming soon'' :D
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I see that Belfast city (centre?) is getting it now but I have to wait 2-3 months despite being only 2 miles out! Cant see why they aren't able to upgrade the whole city at the same time.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Just asked CS why my connection is so slow being as Brighton has had the 10Mb upgrade and I've registered for it.
They told me that although the website shows Brighton as being complete they haven't yet finished the upgrade. Was told to wait till the end of the month and then re-start router. Anyone know if this is the case or is it CS bu||***** hoping that I'll go away for a couple of weeks or longer? |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Received a mailshot from VM and when it was opened it revealed it was from Trevor Elliot MD Customer Services and showed presumably a Customer services operative with 2 fingers in the air. Comments welcome.
Small print shows acceptable use policy "Three Months average of actual 5MB file FTP download speeds in period 1 Oct 2008 to 31 Dec 2008" Now my first language is English and I cannot make sense of this. |

I made two calls to CC, both times ending in them deciding that the problem was that my area hadn't actually been uplifted yet. I reported this back to TS who replied that they had now left notes on my account and that I should call CC again. This time CC reported back to me that, according to the information they have, my area is not done yet and is scheduled for May/June. Anyhow, must be going - since I started writing this I've discovered that TS haven't, as I thought, finished for the day. They say they've added more notes to my account, this time with asterisks, and ask would I like to call CC again. :erm: |

I rang back after work and was told it would cost £5 a month extra! I give up on this. I thought it was a free upgrade. |

It is. If you are asked to pay more then they are trying to put you on BB L

Do not tell CC you want an upgrade as they may be thinking you want BB L same speed but higher limits before you are throttled, just that your STB will not handle your current speed (of 10 meg). |
